Well howdy, I'm Tex with the Adventure Agents
and me and my daughter Hummingbird here,
we're gonna try our hand at making some really neat
and creative traps that we can catch birds in
that are invasive here in the island of Hawaii
that we're living on.
Ah!
All right, you look ready.
Are you ready to trap some pigeons?
Yeah!
All right, let's do it.
So River and I are gonna make a few different traps
and she chose one that she wanted to make
that we found online and as you can see here,
it's made out of these very simple materials.
We have the materials laid out right here,
so let's get to building.
So first thing, we need to cut these poles right here.
You see that, Riv?
What?
Oh no, don't do that.
Oh gosh.
About 16 you can cut in between here.
I'll hold this side for you.
You don't have to cut it all the way, actually, watch.
You can just snap it, just like that.
Oh boy, look!
Keep watching.
All right, so we're just watching videos
of these people trapping quail.
It's hilarious and we are so excited to make these traps.
Axe is gonna be making a trap,
but he's gonna be making a different trap with a box.
So my man Cedar here is bugging to cut something, too,
so I'm letting him use the saw for a minute.
All right, there we go.
Perfect.
All right, so now we need to drill a hole
on both sides of this can to drain the liquid
and to stick our dowel through so it can roll and spin.
So that one right there looks like it's just big enough.
There we go.
Oh, yeah, yeah, just shake it like that.
Oh, there we go.
So this milk still isn't safe to drink.
It's still got fine little metal particles in it,
but we're gonna strain it with a cheesecloth later.
I'm gonna set this aside.
All right, let's see if this works.
Ready?
Stick it through and it spins.
Look at that.
Perfect.
Dude, what you doing?
I know it.
Well, you're drilling into the dirt with my drill, dude.
Boom, boom, boom.
That's good.
Boom, boom.
You stick it in there, yeah?
Stick it in the hole.
There we go, just like that.
Take that loop right there.
Hold it.
There you go.
In the box.
In the box, yeah.
All right, spins good.
There we go.
Just need to nick it a bit.
What'd you, you cut yourself?
No.
Yeah, it's bleeding.
So now, go tell Mommy, there you go.
He's off to tell his mom, Trinity, how he cut himself.
He's very proud of that.
This is exciting.
I cut myself.
All right, so I'm just gonna stick this dowel
through these two holes I drilled.
And these rubber bands are just great.
They're perfect for holding these rods into place here.
And because it's rubber, it just grips the rod.
You don't have to worry about it slipping or anything.
You just gotta kinda pull it tight, like this.
Wrap it around, pull it up and over this.
And look at that.
Perfect.
Holding right in place.
See that?
Band-aid on my finger.
You got a band-aid cause you cut yourself?
Yeah.
Is that exciting?
Yeah, kids and band-aids, always very exciting.
So we're gonna be linking these larger green rubber bands
together here.
We're gonna hook it around here, like this.
Gonna go all the way around and hook
right on to this one right here.
Now, look out, cause this'll hurt.
So, this is how it'll work.
Wham!
Just like that.
Drive that into the ground right there.
So, you need to wedge this down
to where it's pushing up against that right there.
And it's pushing up against this.
Just the tip, barely, like that.
You got it?
Mm-hmm.
Okay.
There we go.
So let go.
And there it is.
That's it.
Perfect.
There you go.
Oh!
That's it.
There you go.
Look at that.
So here's the thing.
Once this wraps around a pigeon's foot,
the pigeon is going to try to get away.
But, because it's a slipknot,
the harder the pigeon tries to get away,
the tighter it gets.
And it won't slip off.
That's the idea with these slipknots.
Yay!
Yay, I'm out!
Give me five, hummingbird.
That's awesome.
Isn't that cool?
We made a trap.
High five.
Yeah.
High five.
Yeah, come here.
Yeah, dude.
Dude, that's looking pretty cool.
Okay, so before we head to the park,
we're going to help Axe finish up his trap here.
I'm going to put a piece on the inside.
So this is going to be the trap door.
The pigeon's going to walk in and trigger a toggle stick
and it's going to, like that, close over it.
At least that's the plan.
Hey, what are you doing?
Are you coming with us?
He's just stowaway.
All right, so he wants to come.
He's like, ah, I'm going to get in here.
Oh, are you guys going to be here with mama?
No, he can come with us.
Are you sure?
Yeah.
How you doing?
I'm okay.
Still pregnant?
Yeah.
Let's see.
Got a belly there.
Yep, still pregnant.
I'm hoping for my brother's birthday now,
so that's a few days away.
Well, don't you worry.
I'm about to go and get you some city pigeon.
Pigeon meat.
Toxic.
Toxic pigeon meat.
No, thanks.
The mongoose was good, but I'll pass on the pigeon.
Okay.
All right, folks, we got all the stuff in the car.
Let's head to the local park
so we can trap us some pigeon.
All right, so we're here at the local park
and there are already a ton of these invasive pigeons
hanging around a park bench over here.
So we're going to bait them a little bit
with a piece of bread here.
See what they'll do.
Yeah, they're kind of skittish.
I don't know.
They're not even going for it.
Oh, here comes an egret.
Oh, the egret's eating it.
There's an egret right there.
It's eating the bread.
Oh my gosh, there's food everywhere here.
Look at all this ramen.
All right, I think we're too late.
I think these pigeons are full.
They weren't even eating the bread we were tossing them.
They were just like-
We'll have to go to the other spot.
Maybe go to the other spot
or maybe come back in the morning
when they're actually hungry.
Chase them under here.
I got it.
All right, well, we don't even need a trap.
Just catch them with our hands.
Yeah, this one's not doing so well.
See, it's got the salt, I think, on its feathers there
and it can't get it off of there.
So I think this one probably can't fly.
Yeah, that's sad.
See that?
It can't fly.
Well, that's sad.
Imagine being a bird and you can't fly.
That'd be rough.
Tell you what.
Something going on on its feathers that is not natural
and it can't get it off of there and it can't fly.
There you go.
Very gentle.
Don't touch his eye.
All right, that's good.
There you go.
Gentle, gentle.
Very gentle.
Yeah.
Boy, isn't that neat?
You're holding a bird.
Eat it.
No, we're not gonna eat that one.
All right, I think we figured out
where all the pigeons are.
They're up there.
There they are.
They're all landing over here.
Come on, this is Kailua Birdman, so I think we know
what's up.
He's feeding them.
Look at that.
There you go.
Oh, look at that.
Look at all these pigeon prints, you guys.
Look at that.
Yeah.
Oh my gosh.
They're all going to him.
He's got them trained over there.
Whoa.
I don't think they'll let you catch them.
All right, well, that was pretty cool
but I don't think pigeon trapping's gonna happen today.
So we're gonna come back tomorrow morning
when those pigeons are good and hungry.
We'll see you tomorrow.
All right, folks, we are back.
It is the next day and all the pigeons seem to be
on that roof over there.
We've got this nice little patch here.
We're gonna get our trap set up,
see if we can lure the pigeons over
and catch a couple of them.
So Ax's trap is looking pretty sweet here.
His is a lot more complex than ours
but it looks really cool.
I hope it works.
And then when the bird comes along,
steps on this,
and activates it.
Put my noose right here.
All right, let's give this a shot.
Well, it caught a saw.
Let's see if it'll catch a pigeon now.
We just need to find out what length it is.
Pull it back.
All right, so it's time to test this crazy contraption.
Nice.
It works.
It does.
All right, so we're putting breadcrumbs
and all kind of stuff here in the noose.
There we go.
And I'm gonna do the same in mine here.
I don't think my noose is big enough
but we'll see what happens.
Ah, yes, a trail of breadcrumbs to the center there.
Oh, it's birdseed.
All right, so we finally have all three of the traps ready.
We got birdseed leading to them,
this one, this one, and that one.
Let's get these pigeons over here.
So like I mentioned,
all the pigeons are up on that roof right there
but these birds over here that are in the grass,
if you feed them, the pigeons notice it
and they all start flying down here.
Here's some birdseed for you.
So I wanna make this clear, everyone.
There will be no pigeons harmed in the making of this video.
We are just capturing the pigeons,
just catching them and we're gonna let them go again.
We're not gonna eat these pigeons
so we don't wanna hurt them.
I would totally eat these pigeons
but because they're in such an urban environment here,
you never know what kind of toxins they're ingesting,
specifically like lead and mercury and that kind of thing
so we are not going to eat these pigeons.
But in a survival situation, we might eat them.
So you never know, this practice might come in handy.
There you go, try to feed them.
There they go, oh, there they go.
There, look, they'll go right there, there they go.
Yeah, all right, they know what's up.
Okay, don't throw them too much.
So we just gotta slowly direct them over here
and then they'll notice the stuff in these traps here.
There you go, there you go.
All right, they're at it now.
All right, oh, they're getting so close to yours.
Oh my gosh, look at this.
Will they go in the box?
I don't know, here, let's see, get them right here.
There you go, look at that, there you go.
They're going to your trap.
They're going to my trap, all right, they're on my trap.
Oh.
Oh, come on, oh, my trap upset them.
They pecked it, they're pecking it.
Oh, that's not gonna work.
Ah, shoot, hmm, okay, we see a flaw in ours.
What about Axel's?
Oh, that white pigeon.
Yeah, look at that, they know, come on, get in there.
So don't peck the deal.
Oh, come on, come on, come on.
Come on, they're so, oh, go, just go in.
Just step on in there.
Oh my gosh, River, no, they're gonna peck it.
Oh, come on, step on it, just step in it.
It's stepping in it.
Step in it.
They blew the noose away.
Oh, no.
They're wing flappies.
Oh, man.
Get one.
Step on it, come on.
It's running over, step on it.
How is it not being triggered yet?
Step on it, come on, oh, it's caught in the noose.
Just step on, come on, it's caught, it's caught in the noose.
It's caught in the, we didn't even, oh, it's out.
Okay, so we redid the noose here.
We're putting some more breadcrumbs in there.
I think we made a mistake
by putting the bread in the noose.
I think that might be part of our mistake here.
Because they're just gonna peck it.
Yeah.
Come on, it's on the table.
I don't see it.
You just gotta eat completely.
Come on, just step on it, you guys.
Oh, yes.
Triggered it.
I think you got it.
Did Axel get one?
Did Ax get one?
Okay.
I got one.
Oh my gosh.
I got a pigeon.
There it is.
Don't worry.
Right here.
It triggered mine.
It did, yeah.
Our trap did not work.
Well, it actually did work, right?
It worked because it got set off.
But the problem is, the noose keeps getting messed up.
So we think our problem is,
is that the bread was on the inside instead of the outside.
So now we're gonna put the bread on the outside here
to force them to cross over the noose to get to it.
But we are determined to catch a pigeon, right?
We're gonna do it?
All right, we are going to catch a pigeon
for Hummingbird here.
So if this doesn't work, should we make a different trap?
All right, let's do that.
All right, so we got about 20 pigeons over here.
Let's see if we can get them to come over this way.
There's an egret.
So you may have heard the term herding cats.
Herding pigeons is even more difficult, I think.
There you go.
Nice.
This is pretty nerve-wracking, right?
Oh, they're getting closer.
They're getting closer.
Oh, yeah.
Oh, it worked.
It totally worked, but we didn't get the pigeon.
They stepped right on the noose, right?
You saw that.
It's literally stepped right on the deal.
The noose went up and it didn't grab their foot.
Don't worry, we are going to catch a pigeon in this video,
but we might have to change strategy
and use a different kind of trap.
All right, so Hummingbird and I
are going back to the drawing board.
We're gonna make a different pigeon trap.
Let's get back to the house.
All right, folks, so we are back at home,
back to the drawing board here,
and we are gonna build another kind of trap
using a basket like this.
Hummingbird here looked through a bunch more videos
and she found one that she really liked
and it involves a basket, just like that.
That was a cement truck.
That was cool, huh?
So for this trap, we're gonna need both these cans.
We're gonna reuse Axel's can and the can that we had.
Can you take these apart, please, here?
I did, that one apart.
You wanna take it apart?
Okay, pull it off, please.
There you go, thank you.
36 inches, so what's half of 36?
18.
18, you got it.
That's it.
Now, when you have something this thin,
all you need to do is score it around and then snap it.
Just like that.
Then you can't pull it back.
Nope, yeah, once you pull the zip tie down,
you can't pull it, can't take it back.
Look at that, you're a pro.
Boom, boom, got the pigeon.
You'll just stand here like this, River.
Just wait till they get under it and go boom.
Just like that.
I like this one.
I'm glad she picked this one.
This is looking super cool.
There you go, look at that.
Oh, gosh, brute strength, man.
So Ax here is making another video for his channel
with another cool trap.
That's looking awesome, man.
Yep, mine works.
But for my trap, the trigger mechanism
is gonna be a little bit different.
I'm gonna make the trigger mechanism remote control
so I can trigger it whenever I want from far away.
When I came up with this idea,
I thought to myself, what could I use
to trigger something remotely
without buying something really expensive?
And well, this truck was like 12 bucks at Target.
It's a remote control monster truck.
See that?
You took my monster truck.
Ax wanted to play with the monster truck
before I destroyed it.
That's it, nice.
Pull it tight, wrap around once.
There you go, up and around.
Perfect.
Right there.
Now, hook it on to the zip tie.
Let it go.
Hey, it works.
All right, so Quacks here is going to demonstrate
how this trap works.
All right, Quacks, ready?
Go.
Oh, ha, it worked.
And it worked again.
All right, so we're gonna show them how it works
before we take it out to test it on some pigeons, okay?
So this is what's called the toggle stick,
and this is the trigger stick,
and that is propped up against this stick right here.
It's just barely attached to that stick.
As soon as the trigger stick goes down,
this toggle stick pops up
because it's attached to the string,
which is holding this back right here.
Now, these rubber bands right here
are trying to pull this thing down, like this,
because they're attached to the back side of that can.
You don't have to have the rubber bands.
Well, you don't, but it makes it faster.
You're right.
Dude, give me five.
Really smart observation there, Hummingbird.
You don't have to have these rubber bands,
but it makes it work faster.
It gives those pigeons less time to fly away.
They'll notice something happening,
and they'll be like, oh, and they'll fly away.
So we want it to go, whoop, real fast.
Lupine, get out of here.
You're gonna get hurt.
What are you, get, go on, go.
This dog just won't listen.
You're gonna get hurt.
She's like, I don't care.
Get out of here.
She smells River's bark.
Come on, over here.
She won't leave it alone.
I'm imagining this on her head,
and she's like a space dog or something.
So let's see it out.
Swivel it.
Oh, hey.
I was gonna say, so let's see it work one more time,
and then she just threw the duck down.
All right, let's take this crazy contraption out to the park
and see if we can't trap a pigeon.
All right, so we have the trap ready and set here,
but man, this wind is really moving this,
so I'm not sure if it's gonna work.
It might trigger it, so we'll see, we'll see.
All right, so we already have a few pigeons.
There's one right there.
Let's give it some seed.
So we're making a trail that leads to here.
It's kind of windy out here.
Oh, my gosh.
There they are.
They can't fly against the wind.
It's hard for them to fly against the wind, yeah.
They're heading over there for sure.
Oh, they're getting close.
Here they are.
All right, let's see.
They're so close.
Come on, don't trigger it with your foot.
I mean, with your beak.
Oh, man.
It wasn't quick enough.
Okay, so I set this back up.
I don't know if it's gonna work.
We'll see.
Oh, my gosh.
They're going in it.
Here you go.
I can't believe they're going in there.
It's like this giant mouth that's trying to.
I don't know.
Here it is.
It's like.
It's after me.
Nope.
No, no.
It's too.
Here it is.
So we actually came out to this park
like a month and a half ago.
Oh, my gosh.
So we actually brought the whole family
out to this park several months ago
and we had a blast hanging out with these pigeons.
It was so much fun.
It's a game of when will the pigeon poop.
Keep feeding it.
Eventually, it's gonna have to poop on your head.
Oh, it just pooped on you.
All right.
This is Frank.
Look at all of them.
Look at them all.
Hurry, hurry, hurry, hurry.
The other one.
No, no, no, no.
It's like.
Look, four.
Let's see.
You can get the most on the right eye.
This just landed on my shoulder.
What's up, dude?
Hi, there.
Don't pick my eye.
Okay, whoa.
I don't have any poop.
Don't poop on me.
Hi, dude.
Don't you poop on me.
Let me throw them up in the air when they're done.
All right, so we.
Oh, oh, you got.
Okay.
Look, it worked, right?
Yes.
Okay, so there was a pigeon trapped under there,
but the pigeon's too strong.
It just pushed it up and got out.
So.
No, it's way under part of it.
Yeah, but.
It wasn't completely.
It's still too strong.
Yeah.
I would call this a success, Hummingbird.
You did such a good job,
but you still haven't caught a pigeon.
We need to catch you a pigeon, right?
What?
Yes.
What happened?
I caught a cardinal.
I was holding it up and then I dropped it.
Oh my gosh.
Okay, let it free.
Wait.
Try to hold it.
I touched it.
So, you got it.
Let me see.
Oh my gosh.
I was just holding that up and then it came in.
It's joining the flock.
Oh my gosh, that is beautiful.
So you just snuck up behind it?
Yeah.
Okay, so I finally finished rigging this up
and it is an absolute hack job, y'all.
This back wheel of the monster truck
is tied to a little pin here
that whenever I turn it in reverse,
with this remote control,
it should pull the pin out and activate the basket drop.
So let's see if it actually works.
Ready?
And it worked.
Oh my gosh, I can't believe it worked.
All right, let's see if the pigeons will come
and test it out.
I got two.
Look at that.
Wow.
I'm so blown away.
I can't believe this worked.
It was such a hack job.
I rubber band the monster truck to that
and then I taped a string around the wheel,
attached it to this little pole,
put a Sharpie right here, duct tape.
I can't imagine anything more hacked up.
But it worked.
And look at that.
This one's just eating.
It's like, I don't even care.
I know you're gonna let me out.
All right, well it's time to let these two free.
There we go.
Oh, nope.
It's not getting out.
It's just hanging onto the cage.
It's just eating.
It's just staying there.
No, you need to go out.
Go on out.
There you go.
What is this?
It didn't even fly away.
Look at it.
It's just hanging on the cage.
All right, come on.
Let's see.
There you go.
All right, there you go.
We got the dove.
It's so cute.
So Hummingbird caught a dove here.
That is so beautiful.
Oh my gosh.
Wow.
So what do you think?
Has this been a fun experience?
You think you'll do more of these traps?
So this is how we do school, y'all.
We actually homeschool, unschool, life learning,
world school, whatever you want to call it.
This is how we educate ourselves and our children
through experience like this.
It's a different kind of life.
It's not for everyone,
but we enjoy it immensely though.
I'm going to keep this monster truck.
I think I may try to do a mongoose catching video
using the remote control method here.
What did you just do?
You just-
I snuck up on this and grabbed it.
Oh my gosh.
So River's the dove ninja here.
Nice.
All right, what do you think?
Was this fun?
Y'all have a good time?
I had a great time.
You guys did so good.
Hummingbird, you did great.
Axe, you did awesome.
Y'all be sure to check the link description down below.
Check out Axe's video, subscribe to his channel
to see what happened with his trap
and how many birds he caught.
We got the idea to make these pigeon traps
from a channel called Creative Traps.
It's a really interesting channel.
They have a ton of different kinds of traps on it.
All right, everyone.
We are back at home.
Trinity's still pregnant.
No, you don't say.
We're trying the swing the baby out method.
Back and forth, back and forth.
Oh man.
A few hours away from 41 weeks.
Oh my gosh.
Baby's shooting for 2024, it seems like.
So between Axe, Hummingbird, and me,
we got like 12 to 15 birds.
We procured a whole meal.
You were pregnant and starving.
We can take our chances with some city pigeons.
Everything fell apart.
We can take chances with the city pigeons.
I'll let you go first.
We are not taking that chance right now.
All right, well, we had a lot of fun, you guys,
and this really wasn't the video I wanted it to be.
I thought we were gonna be a lot more successful
with these traps, but this is the first time doing this,
and we don't have a lot of time to do things right now.
We're just chilling out,
and that's how these videos are gonna be,
and I don't even know if we're gonna be posting.
If she has a baby, which she will
between now and the next video, hopefully,
we may not post a video.
I don't know what we're gonna do.
We'll see, but we'll try to keep you all updated.
Instagram, Facebook.
Instagram, yeah, follow us on Instagram.
We'll definitely keep you updated there.
I don't know what video's gonna look like going forward.
I am going to go into just staying here with her
and keeping her healthy through the recovery period
after the birth.
I don't know how long that'll take.
Could take a month, and I'm just like
not really doing any videos for a month.
I don't know, we'll see.
Oh, and be sure to subscribe to Ax's channel
and check out his video.
I'll put a link in the description down below
so you can watch a more detailed view
of how he trapped his pigeons in his trap.
His trap actually worked a lot better
than the ones we made.
All right, Tracker.
Hi.
Duggar.
My dog's not there.
Neighborhood dog.
Anyways, check out his video.
Subscribe to his channel.
Remember, till next time, life's an adventure.
And love is the key.
And love is a who.
And love loves you.
We'll see you on the next adventure.
Bye.
