Bai Suzhen practiced cultivation for a thousand years on Mount Emei until she successfully transformed. She accepted the teachings of the Bodhisattva Guanyin and decided to abandon the mortal world, cultivate virtue, and accumulate good deeds in hopes of attaining immortality.

While confronting evil spirits, Bai Suzhen met Xu Xian, the “Little Divine Healer of Lin’an,” and also formed a sworn sisterhood with a snake spirit who had cultivated for five hundred years, named Xiao Qing.

Bai Suzhen and Xu Xian fell deeply in love and became husband and wife. During the Dragon Boat Festival, Bai Suzhen accidentally drank realgar wine and reverted to her original snake form, frightening Xu Xian nearly to death.

After Bai Suzhen regained consciousness, she was heartbroken and decided to travel to Mount Kunlun to steal the immortal herb to save Xu Xian. After many dangers and hardships, she finally succeeded in saving him.

News that Bai Suzhen was a demon spread throughout the city of Lin’an, and she suffered greatly at the hands of the people. In order to protect Bai Suzhen, Xu Xian swallowed a demonic elixir called the “Ten-Thousand Spirits Pill,” transforming into a demon-like being and being taken away by Fa Hai to Jinshan Temple.

After Bai Suzhen gave birth to a child, due to her heavy karmic sins, she was imprisoned beneath Leifeng Pagoda. Bound by love, Bai Suzhen was confined; Xu Xian practiced medicine and accumulated virtue in hopes of saving his wife. If the couple wished to reunite, it would only be possible if Leifeng Pagoda collapsed and the waters of West Lake dried up.
