We've got a very shocking discovery here and that is that people are getting very tired
of cars that look amazing but break as soon as it rains.
This won't.
This is the new Subaru Crosstrek, or in other words, every single car in Canada.
And Canadians aren't stupid.
They have to contend with unforgiving snow and vast stretches of uncharted wilderness
along with making their best TV show, Fighting on Ice.
Now, we don't normally get annoyed about cars, but we get annoyed about this one because
this is a car that is massively underappreciated.
And so today, right, we're going to put an end to that because this car won't just help
you out when things get a little bit tough.
It's unlikely to ever let you down and because your mortgage is now five times what it was
last year, you could maybe get one of these and still keep your house.
You're about to discover why this car is nothing like anything else, nor is this video, because
this video also has rabbits in it.
We're very good with rabbits.
Most important thing to remember is this.
This is an all-terrain, do-everything, all-rounder family adventure.
We are an adventurous family and we've got a Subaru and it starts from $27,000.
That's incredible.
That's £36,000 and £4,000 below the average price of a car.
And you get all this.
Permanent symmetrical all-wheel drive, a surprisingly comfortable seat, camera-based automatic cruise,
high-beam assistant, cornering lights, two-litre four-stroke petrol engine.
You can probably fix yourself and a little electrical assistance because this is also
a hybrid.
Yeah, no, don't panic.
Take this on a long journey and you will think you are in something else, not something that's
meant to be driven up tracks and across your farm.
And that is largely because of the philosophy of the suspension, which is quite soft and
bouncy and the seat.
Now, they had their own unique seat philosophy, Subaru.
Largely, it is a seat big enough for larger people with big arms, mechanical that makes
a sound, gear shifter, Apple and Android, of course.
I've kept these icons there so you can see them.
And they are deliberately easy to use with your gloves on.
This is really good.
This is lighter than the Outback, so I'm going to give this a mark for the ease of use.
Outback, quite heavy steering.
There's no wireless charging in this, but there's a place for your phone.
You've got your old-fashioned and very useful things here.
And also, this is a very good thing for American Canadians.
Look, they don't want any of that electric nonsense, which actually does open, but it
isn't very big, as we've said before.
And here, you even get another noise, another clicky sound.
They're doing it on purpose.
There it is.
There's the click.
That's the high and low for your heated seat.
Interesting heated seats in Subarus.
They don't heat all the way.
It's very strange.
It's like, have I had an accident?
Because they have a fan base that might terrify some car makers, they can just get on with
the business of creating cars, not going on Instagram and creating content.
I think the looks also grow on you very fast as well.
The Wilderness one is really, I think it's a very good-looking car, but there's a cheekiness
to it, personality.
You know, it doesn't really care what anyone thinks.
Why did you get that car then?
Why did you get one of them Subaru Crosstreks?
I don't know, because it's good?
It can do all this as well, without breaking a sweat.
Totally useless if you live in Luton, but absolutely essential in bigger countries where
Subaru is properly respected.
And that respect spreads, because Subaru owners do something else some brands would really
love.
They tell their friends.
They have really good names for things too, I think.
So they've got SI Drive, which stands for the Intelligent Drive.
That's here.
And then they've got EyeSight, and that's what they call the radar cruise and all of
the safety stuff.
And do you know what they call the different driving modes?
So snow, dirt, normal, deep snow, mud.
This is great.
X-Mode.
Isn't that good?
I think someone at Land Rover would be like, personally, I'm not really fussed about the
transmission.
They call it a Lineartronic.
It's one continuous gear, if you don't know what that is.
And a lot of people know that as being the CBT gearbox.
Lots of people think that's really unreliable and a worry.
But again, there's a lot of people with 150,000 miles on a CBT with no issues at all.
This will tow.
And it's clever, because it knows what gear to be in, whether you're towing, whether you're
going up a mountain or through snow.
I like that feature.
They've moved on.
It can tow 2,800 pounds or 1,200 kilograms.
And in there, 1,560 liters of space.
Not massive.
About the same as a Tucson.
Trouble with a Tucson.
Can't get dirty and enjoy it.
Or get you home as well in a blizzard.
And that's the appeal here.
It's a bit like Land Rover in a way.
People like the idea of having useful things they only use very rarely.
I mean, like, you've got Wellies in the house.
Who do we think this car is for?
Do you know what?
I'll tell you who I think it's for.
I think it's for someone like my friend James, crossfit, beautiful Canadian girlfriend and
a dog.
And you might think, well, that sounds like the perfect man.
He's got everything.
Well, he hasn't, because he drives a Tesla Model Y.
And recently, he went to Derbyshire to try and do a walk with the dog and got stuck in
the snow.
Three hours there, get stuck, three hours back.
Should have bought a Subaru.
Although you could argue this is a cheap car for what it does, I don't love the materials,
but it doesn't feel particularly cheap and nasty.
They are very squidgy and soft.
There is a scent to them.
We've mentioned that before.
But other than that, I think it's the value.
So for example, you can pick up a used one of these, 14,000 miles for $19,000.
That's under 15,000 pounds here in the UK.
You can get a used one here for about 25,000 pounds.
But I think considering what it does, light headlining, it's a pretty good proposition,
right?
This engine is the very famous Boxer engine, it's a two litre.
And it's interesting because it's known for being pretty bulletproof, but also very flat.
And that's the magic of this engine.
Because it's flat, it means it's better balanced.
And you could argue that is one of the reasons why this is so useful off-road.
I've actually taken this off-road and I have been very surprised about how capable this
car is.
Considering what I'm about to say next, which is this only produces 136 horsepower and the
0-60 is nearly 11 seconds.
Right.
And because that's not very fast, we quickly need to make you think about something else.
This is a rabbit.
I thought you'd like to meet him.
This is Prim, who we were just driving past and there's a rabbit running about in somebody's
front garden.
This is Patrick.
Say hi, Patrick.
Hi, mate.
He's going to eat my jumper in a minute, ain't he, mate?
Just like that, you've forgotten about the 0-60 and the very basic radio menu and backup
camera.
So now we can get back to the business of how nimble and quirky the Crosstrek is and
how much it costs.
Let's do some money comparisons.
£279 a month for one of these 7,400 deposit, 2% APR, which seems OK in the UK.
In the US, $214.
Warranty 60,000 miles.
Not brilliant.
But there are some US dealerships which are doing incredible deals.
I think it's like 10 years, 150,000 miles, very, very useful.
Servicing isn't the cheapest and nor are the parts.
So that's worth noting, but it is obviously a very capable car.
Insurance for me here in the UK is £473 a year, which again is more expensive than a
front wheel drive car.
So that's worth noting.
And in some cases, when you change the tyres, they all have to be done at the same time.
MPG is £35,000 and £41,000 UK, which is good.
A Mazda CX-30 is, though, £7,000 cheaper.
Q2 is £5,000 less.
And even a basic XC40 sits in roughly the same price range.
So yeah, sure, if you're doing just going back and forward to the shops, those cars
are going to be better choice, right?
But Subaru have their own crowd, like a secret club.
And the good news with the Crosstrek is kind of like they're saying, we're all welcome.
Here are your stereo options, which you get.
But I just wanted to show you these because these are very unusual and talk a little bit
about the stereo.
Interesting.
So sound customisation.
You've got sound restorer, virtual bass, and then you've got a dynamic beat enhancer and
then you've got your balance and a fader and so on there.
That's not enough parameters, but it's OK.
But the reason why this has got potential, because some of the higher trims like Limited
and Wilderness, they get the Harman Kardon.
And the reason I think that's good is because of the position and size of the speakers.
Now, these speakers are six by nines, which is the holy grail of speaker size.
Not sure if you know that.
So if you did have a system and you wanted to upgrade it yourself, a couple of six by
nines in the front, it's going to be two hundred pounds, an amp, three hundred pounds, a
couple of tweeters, another two hundred pounds.
Absolutely brilliant soundstage.
We in Europe get the mild hybrid engine.
Told you not to panic.
The US gets 153 and 182 horsepower and a 2.5 litre flat four instead of the two litre.
Because this is under 40 grand here, you won't pay six hundred and twenty pounds in tax per
year just to leave it on the drive.
And for an off-road car, this next bit might surprise you.
So what's it like to drive?
I'm glad you asked.
So let me put it in perspective.
We had three cars at the same time.
Two of the other cars were forty thousand.
One was forty, one was forty five thousand.
And I had this as well.
And I had to do a long journey, personal thing.
And I thought, which car can I take?
I need an easy car, comfortable, easy to drive.
That's right.
I took one of the other cars.
It was a Volt.
No, not really.
It was this we decided to take.
And that tells you a lot, doesn't it?
I won't leave it out.
The CBT can be a bit screamy, but cruising it isn't.
Actually, it's just as quiet, if not more than at least one of the cars we mentioned earlier.
And that's why I took it on a long run.
Here's what I think when other manufacturers are looking at a car like this.
Well, our car is way better than that Subaru.
Our car smells nice.
It's like a Polestar, like a flower shop.
We've got loads more power, for example, 136 horsepower.
That's not even you can't even.
But there's also another unspoken and very important component to making a car.
And that is making a car with bags of character that feels like it's part of your family, like your friend.
And that's this.
My little mate, that is.
