Meta Platforms is preparing to terminate approximately 8,000 employees,
representing roughly 10 percent of its global workforce,
according to reports from CNBC and internal documents surfaced Thursday.
The layoffs, scheduled to begin on May 20,
mark the first wave of a broader restructuring effort aimed at streamlining operations.
This move follows CEO Mark Zuckerberg's ongoing commitment to a leaner organizational structure,
shifting the company's capital and focus away from traditional headcount
and toward massive investments in artificial intelligence infrastructure.
Internal memos suggest that Meta is prioritizing automation,
with leadership projecting that AI tools will significantly augment or replace
certain engineering and operational tasks by next year.
This latest reduction was announced after Meta shed over 20,000 roles in 2023.
The company has not specified which departments will be hardest hit.
Industry analysts view the new cuts as a strategic reallocation of resources
to more AI-related areas.
