The American Express Gold Card is one of Amex's classic lineup of charge cards.
It is the little brother of the Amex Platinum, but actually a more useful card for day-to-day
spending due to the high point earning on two everyday categories. I was able to earn 35,000
Amex points in each of these categories per year, so that's 70,000 points all together
with a value of over $700. Then, like with other Amex cards, over the years the annual fee on the
offset that and you have to have the mind of an investigative journalist or a conspiracy
theorist to maximize all of them. Now, there are actually a lot of little tricks with both getting
the card, spending on the card to earn points, redeeming points and using credits in order to
maximize the value you get out of it. And in this video, we're going to go through all of them.
This is how to maximize the Amex Gold Card in 2026.
Hey, credit warriors. Welcome to the show. My name is Ben Hedges, aka The Credit Shifu,
and on this channel, I cover US credit cards, personal finance and luxury travel. If you like
the sound of that, please subscribe, but let's get into it. Oh, and this video is brought to
you by Max Rewards, but more on that later. So let's start right from the beginning and
talk about getting the card first. So when I got the gold card back in 2018, at a time when it had
just been revamped with new benefits, I made a mistake. And the first thing I did when I got home
was get on the computer and apply for the new card. And I got approved instantly with a 25,000
point signup bonus. Now, a couple of minutes after I've been approved, Mrs. Credit Shifu came up
behind me with a 50,000 point signup bonus offer open on her phone and said, have you applied yet?
And I was like, yeah. So the mistake I made was just applying through the public link on Amex's
site. I didn't check to see if there was a higher offer available through referral links. So you
should always check if there is a better offer on the gold card that you can get other than the
public offer. For example, the current public offer is 60,000 points, but you can get a higher offer
through several methods. One that can work is trying a browser that you never use. OK, so let's
try Safari and search Amex Gold and, oh, sadly, no luck with Safari. So let's go back to Chrome,
which is the one I normally use. But this time we'll try an incognito window and search Amex Gold
and look, bonuses as high as 100,000 membership rewards points. Now, this 100,000 point offer is
the current high bonus on this card where you apply. They do a soft credit pool and offer you
a bonus up to 100,000. So it could be 60,000, it could be 80,000, could be 100,000. Only if you
accept the offer, do they then do a hard credit pool. There's also another way of getting this
bonus, and that one is even easier. Just use a friend's referral link. If I look at what's
available on my referral link right now, yes, I do see the up to 100,000 point offer. And my link
also gives you the referral bonuses on other Amex cards like 175,000 on the Platinum, etc. I'll put
my referral link down in the description box below if you want to use it for your application.
And I thank you very much if you do, since I get a little bonus, too. So those are two methods to
get higher than public bonuses, incognito window or new browser and referral links. Always check
them and check out credit card blogs and stuff to make sure you know what the highest bonus out
there is and see if you can get it. So you now have the card. So what is the next step to maximizing
its value? Let's now look at the point earning on the Amex Gold. There are two four point per dollar
categories, one three point per dollar category, one two point per dollar category, and then it's
one point per dollar on everything else. This isn't one of those cards that you leave at home like the
Amazon card. Once you've entered it as a payment method in your Amazon account, you don't really
need the physical card. No, the Amex Gold should be in your wallet at all times because it's two
four point per dollar categories are restaurants worldwide up to fifty thousand dollars in
purchases per year and U.S. supermarkets up to twenty five thousand dollars in purchases per
year. If you max that out, that's three hundred thousand points you can earn in those categories.
However, most people won't come even close. The most I've spent in a year in each of those
categories of about eight or nine thousand dollars. But these are two very common everyday
spend categories. And these are the reason that I would most probably never cancel this card. Next,
we have the three X category in the two X category. It's three points per dollar on flights
booked directly with airlines and through Amex travel. And then you also have two points per
dollar on prepaid hotels and other travel purchases through Amex travel. This would include purchases
through the hotel collection, which we'll talk about a little bit later. So if you don't have
the Amex platinum, the Amex gold is going to be your best Amex card that earns membership rewards
points for purchasing flight tickets. Of course, you may have cards from other banks that have
better rates, too. So you might want to check on those as well. Then with the two X category,
it's pretty easy to beat that. So these three X and two X categories are often beaten by other
cards. Thus, the main ones that I pay attention to are the four X categories. These can be beaten,
too, actually. For example, the City Custom Cash can get you five points per dollar on dining or
grocery, but only on up to five hundred dollars per month in spend. The Chase Freedom Flex may
also have dining or grocery at five X on one thousand five hundred dollars in spend one quarter
of the year. We saw dining in January, haven't had grocery yet this year, but we still got two quarters
to go. But these cards only beat the Amex gold by one point per dollar and they have limits.
You're also earning a different points currency, so you may still be better off just using the
gold card across the board in dining and grocery and consolidating all the points you've earned in
those categories as Amex points. If you split points between two currencies, it's harder to
redeem them because you have a smaller amount of points in each. We also have one little tip with
the grocery category, since a lot of grocery stores like ShopRite, for example, sell gift
cards for other merchants that you would normally only get one X at. If you know that you will shop
at that store in the future, you could pick up a gift card at ShopRite or another grocery store
and get four points per dollar and then use that card for the purchase that you are going to make
anyway at Home Depot or wherever. Like this person on Reddit, I basically get four X points 80% of
the time on purchases I was planning on making like Airbnb, Uber, Amazon, some gas stations,
retail stores, etc. All legit, no MS, which means manufactured spend, just being smart.
Now, someone does chime in and give a little warning on this. Be careful, Amex isn't dumb.
They have access to level three data depending on the store slash network. It's okay once in a while
that if you do too much, they may shut you down. But I think if you buy a gift card or two along
with whatever regular shopping you are doing, personally, I doubt you would get into trouble.
Just don't go crazy with it and don't make purchases that are only gift cards in total
round numbers like 100, 200, 300, etc. All right, so that is how to maximize point earning.
Let's now move on to maximizing the credits. But first, if you have a lot of credit card
accounts that you are earning rewards from for cashback and free travel, then you have to check
out the ultimate credit card management app, Max Rewards. They have been a sponsor of our channel
for a long time and I've seen their app get better and better over the years. With a secure link to
all your banks, Max Rewards shows you all your transactions across all your cards within one app.
No need to log into different banks' websites. You will see your balances,
utilization, due dates, and points and rewards balances for each card. There are even things
like card value trackers where you can see the value you earn from rewards versus the annual fee.
This is actually the one for my Amex Gold. Not bad considering we are only about halfway through
my membership year. Another great feature of the pro version of Max Rewards, Max Rewards Gold,
is that the app activates credit card offers for you so that you never miss a deal.
You can see here I can search offers across all my cards, both Amex and Chase, and there have
been times when I've used an offer when I was out shopping without even realizing it and saved some
money. That's happened a few times now. And the Amex Gold, the card we're talking about in this
video, has these Amex offers that can be activated by the app. So check out Max Rewards. Click my
link below for a 7-day free trial of Max Rewards Gold, the premium version, and then a 3-month
discount on the annual plan if you choose to continue after the trial. If you download it
directly from the App Store, use code BEN for the same deal. So let's now get into the credits. And
this is a big area where you can get a lot of value. And then at the end, I'm going to give
you some more tips, a few bonus tips, how to maximize points redemptions and bring in some
extra points as well. So let's look at all the annual credits you get on the Amex Gold. First,
we have the Resi credit, which is $100 per year split into $50 per six months, renewing in January
and July. If you don't use it, you lose it. Then we have Uber Cash, which is $120 per year and is
deposited in your account as $10 per month. Again, if you don't use it, you lose it. The dunking
credit is $84 per year, $7 per month. And the dining credit is $120 per year or $10 per month.
And both of those, you guessed it, if you don't use it, you lose it. We'll ignore the hotel
collection for now. So let's look closely at each one of these credits. The Resi credit.
This refunds you $50 each half of the year when you use your gold card at restaurants that are
in the Resi dining program. Now, if you live in a big city, this really should be no problem.
But if you live in a smaller town, there may only be one restaurant near you or no restaurants. Like
for me personally, I have one restaurant, Oaken Reed. Lucky thing is it's a really good restaurant
that I like going to. My kids are always asking me if we can go there. They like the mac and cheese
off the kids menu. But $50 isn't enough to cover a full meal for two people or a family. So some
people use the strategy of buying a gift card in the first half of the year and then combining that
with the $50 credit in the second half. And that way you can get a $100 meal for free in one go.
Now, if you go to the restaurant and buy a gift card, that should be the most surefire way of
triggering the credit on a gift card purchase. But it seems that if the restaurant uses the
Toast system for digital gift cards or takeout orders, you can actually get refunded through
the credit too. There's a pretty useful site that someone made. I'll paste it down below in a pin
comment, but it lets you search all the Resi restaurants in the country and you can select
ones that use Toast for online orders and for e-gift cards. Like I can see here that my local
Resi restaurant does do e-gift cards through Toast. So this is the URL. It's useyourcredits.com
But just be clear, just because you are able to use the site to find restaurants that use Toast
for takeout or gift cards doesn't give a 100% guarantee that you will get the credit. So it's
best to try it with the smallest denomination first to like $25 and see if you get refunded.
And if you do, then you can buy more. But the best way is to just go directly to the restaurant and
make a purchase. Getting takeout can also make the credit go further since no tip is required.
Let's move on to our next credit. Uber Cash. So with Uber Cash, the things that you need to know
are number one, if you don't use it one month, you lose it. Number two, you need an Amex card
as your backup payment method. Otherwise, the Uber Cash will not apply to your bill. It can
be a different Amex card. So if you have the Amex Green, which gets you three points per dollar on
transit, which includes rideshare like Uber, you could use that instead of the gold. Number three,
you can use it for Uber Eats as well. So if you don't often take Ubers because you just drive
places in your own car, well, you still need to eat, right? So just use Uber Eats and get refunded.
And like with the Rezzy credit, the Uber credit will go further on food if you choose pickup
instead of delivery so that you can avoid delivery fees and tips. The Dunkin Credit.
So this is $84 per year, $7 per month. And this one is pretty simple. If you have a Dunkin Donuts,
actually it's just called Dunkin now, near where you live or work, just buy a coffee and a donut
or this $6 meal deal plus tax. That should be the best part of $7. Another way to make it go further
is to do what this person on Reddit does. Go to Dunkin, buy coffee grounds and use it at home with
a refillable K-cup, $10 bag of coffee, $7 Amex Dunkin Credit equals $3 for 40 servings of coffee.
Thank me later. But what if there is no Dunkin near you? Here on the East Coast, we're used to
seeing Dunkin everywhere. But if you live in the Pacific Northwest or any of these white states,
there are literally zero. Even in California, there are not many locations for the size of
the state. I think San Francisco only has like one Dunkin at the airport, I seem to remember.
So instead, you could do what this person suggests or just refill the online card like the majority
of holders have been doing. So, yeah, Dunkin has a card that you can refill using a credit card
and you will get refunded for the credit if you use the Amex Gold. And then you can use it for
like $50 worth of donuts when you're in an area that has Dunkin. I like how this person replies,
though. $56 in with no Dunkin within a thousand miles of me. I'll use it somewhere someday.
All right. Lastly, we have the dining credit. So with this, you can get refunded $10 per month
when you use your Amex Gold to pay at any of these merchants, Grubhub, The Cheesecake Factory,
GoldBelly, Wine.com and Five Guys. Now, my main tip for this is to use it through Grubhub
and select pick up so you don't have delivery fees or a tip. And that makes it go further.
Basically, every restaurant almost is now on Grubhub, Uber Eats and Seamless.
So it opens up this credit to everyone, no matter where you live in the country.
So that's all the credits covered. Let's now give you a few quickfire bonus items,
how to squeeze those last little bits of value out of the card to finish off the video.
So first of all, adding an additional card member right now can get you 10,000 points. I'm not sure
if this is targeted, but this is potentially what you'll see in your account. Earn 10,000
membership rewards points after they spend $2,000 in eligible purchases on their card in their first
six months. The first five additional cards are free. And then after that, it's $35. Next,
Amex offers are really worth taking advantage of. Like, look at some of the offers that are
in my account. Spend $250 at Airbnb, get 5,000 points or spend $1,000 with Marriott,
get $250 back. That's like a 25% discount on your hotel stay right there. Now, all my Amex offers
are automatically activated since I have max rewards gold. If you want a seven day free trial
and a three month discount, if you choose to continue after that, check it out in the links
down below. Next, how to actually use the points for maximum value. Well, never do this. Amex tries
to make redeeming points for a statement credit at 0.6 cents per point, the most obvious and easy
redemption option to find. Look, it's right here on the first page you get to when you open your
account. And then they somewhat bury the really good redemption options. If you want to exchange
points for cashback, get the Charles Schwab Amex Platinum. In addition to the gold, you can then
click invest with rewards and you can send your Amex points to your Charles Schwab account at a
Look, I just sent 5000 points over there and it becomes $55. Just FYI, you are limited to 1 million
points a year that you can redeem at that value. Another high value way to redeem points is to
transfer them to partners and book business or first class flights. Often there will be transfer
bonuses of like 20%, 30%, 40%, etc. There aren't any right now, but they would appear here next to
airline logos. And also if you have this card, you can get access to Point.me, a service that
you'd normally have to pay for. And it lets you search award availability by route and then teaches
you how to book the ticket. Like on this New York to LA route, it seems that if I transfer 63,000
points to Qantas, I can then book American Airlines in business class with just $6 in taxes
and fees. Not saying that's the best deal since I didn't go in and look at specifically what product
was, whether it's a live flat seat or like domestic first class style seat. But just an example,
all right, Point.me can show you how to use your points and it uses real time data. So if you find
availability on Point.me, you should in theory see that on the airline site too. Just make sure to
check that. Lastly, referrals is also a great way to get some extra points. You can find your
referral link in your online account. But also if you go to this website and sign into your Amex
account, you will see all your cards at the top. So I have the Schwab Platinum here and this space
for some reason, this empty space is my gold card. Maybe they don't have the graphic for the white
gold, which is the one I have limited edition. That's the only reason I could think of that it's
blank. And it lets me earn 15,000 points five times a year. You can then go down to the right
hand side to find the link. So an average person could probably do that once or twice a year, right?
Like at least you could refer a family member. And then in return, next time you want a card that
they have, you could use their referral link. And the referral link on the gold currently gets the
applicant access to that up to 100,000 point offer. If you want to get the gold with that offer,
or actually any other Amex card, because you can find all the others from that landing page too,
I'll put my referral link down below. Big thank you if you use it since it helps me out a lot.
And that is where I'm going to leave the video for today. I think we've covered pretty much
everything. If I missed anything, do let me know. I guess I didn't talk about the hotel collection,
but we can leave that for another time. Don't forget to get a free trial and then a three
month discount on Max Rewards with my link below and code Ben. Please subscribe if you're new.
I'll see you next time. Bye bye.
