The Sainsbury Wing galleries are closed until 2025 while we carry out our NG200 building work to mark our Bicentenary and transform your visitor welcome.
NG200 celebrates 200 years of bringing people and paintings together in the National Gallery.
As part of this programme, the Sainsbury Wing has recently closed
to allow for a series of sensitive interventions to the building's entrance
that will reshape our museum for its third century and the next generation of visitors.
You can still find your favourite paintings on display across the rest of the Gallery,
where we have temporarily redisplayed part of a pre-1500 collection.
This has given us the opportunity to present these much-loved works
in a different and dynamic setting.
As we reflect on our history,
some galleries now recall how the paintings were displayed a generation ago,
back in the Wilkins Building and in double, denser hangs against different coloured walls.
In others, you will be seeing these old friends in a new context,
a moment to experience the paintings by Jan van Eyck
and the early Netherlandish masters in a more intimate setting,
evocative of the domestic spaces for which many of these works were conceived.
Unexpected encounters offer a chance to pull comparisons
between works not usually shown together.
Artistic dialogues come to the fore
with Italian guests hosted in the Netherlandish rooms.
Look at portraits by Antonello da Messina and Sandra Botticelli
in conversation with the work of Rogier van der Weyde and Hans Memling,
which inspired them.
Some of our greatest 15th and early 16th century altarpieces
are shown in new settings,
allowing us to admire them in a new light.
We hope you will come to the National Gallery
and enjoy these new displays,
as we continue working to shine a new and exciting light on the nation's pictures.
