Your English is better than your German?
Then you might make many mistakes when speaking German.
because you use English words or grammar.
And that usually sounds pretty embarrassing.
You say things like "I am good" instead of "I'm doing well,"
because your brain can't distinguish English and German well enough.
That's why I'm explaining to you in this video the most typical mistakes,
those who are primarily native English speakers or particularly proficient English speakers.
At the end of the video, you will then know exactly what to pay special attention to in the future.
so that your German sounds truly German.
Just a quick clarification.
Why does this even happen with these incorrect literal translations?
Very simple.
If your brain cannot make use of a certain piece of information,
because it does not know her well enough or has forgotten her
Then it automatically searches for similar, better-known information.
Also, if it does not know at which position the verb stands in the German sentence,
It simply takes advantage of English verb placement.
That is why it is so important not to start free speaking too early,
Otherwise, one simply gets used to very many mistakes.
Now let's look at the mistakes that good English speakers particularly often make.
First category.
These words sound very similar in German and English.
but their meanings usually differ completely from one another.
Here we have
The classic.
If you tell your German girlfriend, "I have a poison for you,"
Then she will probably leave you forever or terminate your friendship.
A gift in English is a gift.
In German, it is deadly.
The poison would be Poison.
Also be careful.
Next word pair.
That is the mistake that hurts the most.
To become means werden.
To get means bekommen.
If, for example, you say,
Never say in German, I'm getting a doctor.
Said, I will become a doctor.
Next word pair.
You can donate money.
You can spend time with someone.
So let's say it in German.
In English, you would say
Do not confuse.
Next word pair.
If you ask, you are serious; you ask whether the person is an honest businessman.
If you want to know whether someone is telling jokes right now, you say,
Also, do you mean that seriously?
Let's move on to the next category, namely
Prepositions are the glue of your sentences.
If you use the English adhesive, everything falls apart.
Good examples of that.
In English you say
Translate this never with waiting for.
Waiting for you means you stand in line for someone to do them a favor.
Otherwise, it means I'm waiting for the bus.
Next example
or at someone
Never say, I am interested in.
That would be wrong.
They say I am interested in a topic or in someone.
Or I am interested in something or someone.
Next example
It is not questions for.
It's either I ask for directions or I ask for help.
Next category
This is the section where you try to be especially eloquent or funny.
but unfortunately, that is exactly the opposite of what you achieve if you translate this literally here.
English images often don't work at all in German.
For example, very common and typical
Everyone says that.
That makes sense.
But meaning cannot be produced.
Say, that makes sense.
That makes you sound much more educated right away.
Even though many people in everyday speech now say that it makes sense.
Next example
And I just heard that a few days ago during my coaching session with a participant.
She translated it as
She actually wanted to say, this is a piece of cake.
It's totally easy.
But in German we don't say, "That is a piece of cake."
That sounds delicious, but it's incorrect.
Next example
Many translate it
That sounds totally weird.
Just say I'm looking forward to something.
Next example
I hear it all the time.
Someone asks you if you still want coffee.
And you answer
Then he could say
Good that you are a good person.
But do you still want coffee?
I've heard this error so many times already.
But don't say I'm good; rather
Like this or not?

Tense forms
Even C1 learners make mistakes here.
Because English is more complicated here than German.
For example, in English you say
Many translate this as
If you say that, the German thinks you no longer live there.
It's over.
But if you still live there,
I have been living here since
Another example
You don't translate that literally into German.
And don't say
Just say I'm eating right now.
The word "just" replaces the entire English system.
Let's move on to the next category.
Namely the
That is probably the most common mistake made by English speakers.
You are applying English verb positioning to German sentences.
Here there are very crucial differences that one simply must be aware of.
if one wants to speak German
First, sentences with "because"
One would say in English
Wrong would be
Correct would be
As soon as you say "weil," the verb must go to the end of the sentence.
And then we also have the that-clauses.
For example, one would say in English
Wrong would be
Correct would be
Get used to the fact that when a conjunction such as because, that, although, or if appears,
Then the verb goes to the end in German.
There are many more examples from each of these five categories.
which of course I can't explain all of in the video right now.
