always get to all of them but we do our best to read them all and to engage them as we possibly
have the opportunity. Now today I want to look at a very very important topic from the 14th chapter
of the Gospel of John and that is the section that talks about Jesus is going away and returning.
What does he mean by that? What's involved in this particular chapter?
And how does it fit within the framework of fulfilled bible eschatology? And by eschatology
we mean the study of last things the end times events relating to the coming of Christ the
judgment the resurrection of the dead the eternal kingdom and the end of the age some people consider
at the end of the world. Speaking of which we have a book we want to talk about a little bit later on
in the video called will planet earth be destroyed but we'll talk about that a little bit later and
show you how you can get a copy of it. Now in John chapter 14 the text says let not your heart
be trouble you believe in God believe also in me in my father's house are many mansions if it were
not so I would have told you I go to prepare a place for you and if I go and prepare a place
for you I will come again and receive you to myself that where I am there you may be also
and where I go you know and the way you know Thomas said to him Lord we do not know where
you are going and how can we know the way and Jesus said to him I am the truth the way the
truth and the life no one comes to the father except through me now this is not the first time
that this conversation has surfaced in the ministry of Christ as a matter of fact we can go back to
John chapter 8 to see the beginning of this conversation at least hints about it because
Jesus talks about going to some place and in speaking about going to some place he tells those
in the audience particularly the Jews that he was going somewhere that they could not come now
it's going to be interesting because some of the objections that will come up as we show how this
text relates to the imminent return of Christ that was associated with the fall of the temple
in 70 AD and therefore coming of Christ that has already occurred there are objections that come up
that are going to try to circumvent the time statements in the Bible those statements that
sort of pinpoint the time in which these events were going to occur we're going to look at that
now first of all let's go to the eighth chapter of the gospel actually to John chapter 7 and let's
see if we can get some sort of precursors and to the message that we have in John chapter 14
and I want you to notice some of the language that we find here in John the seventh chapter
beginning at verse 33 and reading through verse 34 John chapter 7 verses 33 and 34 now here's
the Lord having a conversation with the Jews and the conversation is a little bit you know
rocky as far as his interactions with them and so this is what he says to them Jesus said to them
I shall be with you a little while longer now please make a note of that I will be with you
a little while longer and then I go to him who sent me now it's very very important because
when we get to the chapters 14 15 and 16 when Jesus uses this same phrase to talk about
he's going away some people want to say that where he was going in a little while and returning
in a little while was to the grave but you can see very clearly that what Jesus says
is that he was going to him who sent me now unless you believe that God the father
was in the grave of all places where he could be or the tomb Joseph of Arimathea's tomb
if that's where you thought he was and hence Jesus was going there I think we need to really
really back up and think about that again listen to the text then Jesus said to him I shall be with
and then I go to the grave no he said and then I go to him who sent me so he was going to
the father then he said you will seek me and not find me and where I am you cannot come so he's
talking to the Jews there was a section or segment of the Jews who were very antagonistic
to the teaching of Christ they were not very friendly toward him and they were looking for
ways to entrap him in his teaching looking for ways to harm him even with bodily harm etc and
but he says to them you will seek me and not find me and where I am you cannot come
now the Lord tells them that where he is they cannot come now I want you to be thinking about
this because if that's the grave why would he tell these Jews they weren't going to the grave
was he trying to tell them that they were going to live forever on earth certainly not it wasn't
the grave that he was speaking of but yet that's what some people say and the reason they say it
is because here the Bible says a little while longer and then I will go to him who sent me
but you see in those later verses it says a little while and I will go away and then it says
and a little while I will come again I will return but we see very clearly here that the
place where he is going is to the father to him who sent me you know the Bible says in John chapter
3 and verse 16 for God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son that whosoever
believes in him should not perish but have everlasting life for God sent not his son
into the world to condemn the world but that the world through him might believe
now it's telling you very clearly that it was the father who sent me at another place he says
the father who sent me is with me he has not left me alone so it is the father who sent him
and the Lord says I will go to him who sent me so wherever the father was
is where the Lord was going when he makes these statements by saying you will seek me and not
find me and where I am you cannot come so we want to be thinking about where Jesus was going
and why they couldn't come so what is he telling them he's saying to them you cannot come to the
father you cannot come to the father that's where I'm going I'm going to him who sent me but you
cannot come to the father now Jesus had made some statements earlier about coming to the father
and in John chapter 6 verses 44 and 45 he says no one can come to me unless the father
who sent me draws him and I will raise him up the last day it is written in the prophets and
they shall all be taught by God therefore everyone who has heard and learned from the father comes to
me and so we have to see that Jesus is talking about coming to him through the father but they
couldn't come to the father is what he's telling them so we need to understand why they couldn't
come to the father and what Jesus is referring to when he says that no one can come and he says
they couldn't even come to him look in verse 65 of John 6 I'll read 64 and 65 it says but there
are some of you who do not believe for Jesus knew from the beginning who they were who did not
believe and who would betray him and he said therefore I have said to you that no one can come
to me unless it has been granted to him by my father now many of them got offended
at that statement because he was affirming something about himself that they just didn't
like that they didn't agree with and that it was his relationship to the father it was a statement
of his deity a statement indicating that God was his father and he was the son of God and that's
something that they didn't believe and they did not want to accept and so these are some of the
reasons why he's telling them oh you cannot come you cannot come to me you cannot come to the
father then when we take a look at John chapter 7 if we read further and I'm gonna turn this light
on a little bit in verse 36 well let's start let's read on from verse 35 of John chapter 7
it says then the Jews among themselves said among themselves where does he intend to go
that we shall not find him does he intend to go to the dispersion among the Greeks and teach the
Greeks now look at what they were thinking they were thinking that Jesus was going to go
to some physical place to some geographical locale to some place you know either in Palestine
or the area you know roundabout some area of the Gentiles where is he going to go is he going to go
among the Greeks and teach the Greeks but they didn't get it what he was telling them is I'm
going to the father so in verse 36 they said what is this thing that he said you will seek me
and not find me and where I am you cannot come now you know they had their security personnel
they had their uh police and um officers etc and who actually you know went out searching for him
and then if you look in verse 45 it says then the officers came to the chief priests and pharisees
who said to them why have you not brought him and they said to the uh the officers answered no man
ever spoke like this man I mean they were so mesmerized by his teaching and caught up with
the glory and the truthfulness by which he spoke the conviction etc that they wouldn't even
apprehend him but he tells them I'm going someplace and where I am you cannot come
so that's what we have in John chapter 7 now in John chapter 8 he's continuing a discussion with
the Jews and still talking about his father so in verse 19 of chapter 8 18 and 19 he's bearing
witness all right of his father and let's let's let me just back up and start reading in verse 16
because that talks about the father sending him again he says and yet if I do judge comparing
himself with the way they judged according to flesh he says and yet if if I do judge
my judgment is true for I am not alone but I am with the father who sent me Jesus says I'm with
the father who sent me it is also written in your law that the testimony of two men is true
I am one who bears witness of myself and the father who sent me see that statement again
the father who sent me bears witness of me then they said to him where is your father
see they're still looking for him they're trying to peep around the corner trying to figure out
where is this father where you're going to that we don't know where this is what's this secret
place around here that you got you where you hide out and you know you and the father sit and talk
where is that place you see here they are on this physical material level and that's why they can't
understand the lord and why they don't believe him so they said to him where is your father
Jesus answered you know neither me nor my father if you had known me you would have known my father
also and so these words Jesus spoke in the treasury as he taught in the temple and no one
laid hands on him so even if he had a secret place where he went and they found the secret place
who was going to put their hands on him who was going to take him it says no one laid hands on him
for his hour had not yet come now verse 21 then Jesus said to them again I am going away so he
keeps repeating this phrase over and over and over again I am going away and you will seek me
now watch this next phrase now remember before he says you will not find me because you do not
believe underline that but now he adds to that and says I'm going away and you will seek me
and you will die in your sin so now notice that remember I said earlier that some people were
going to say that he was going to the grave but if that's where he was going how could he tell them
they too would not go to the grave the bible says it's appointed unto men once to die
right Hebrews 9 27 and he tells them here you will seek me and will die so they were going to
die they were going to the grave but that's not where Jesus was going he says I'm going to him
who sent me I'm going to the father but you will die in your sin where I am or where I go
you cannot come so if they didn't believe they could not come if they died in their sin
meaning they didn't repent of that unbelief they could not go where Jesus was going
which was to the father who sent him now look at their question so the jews said will he kill
himself because he says where I go you cannot come and Jesus said to them you are from beneath
I am from above you are of this world I am not of this world now what world was he talking about
he's talking about the world of the jews the world of Israel the bible says he came to his own
but his own did not receive him but as many as received him to them he came he gave the
authority to become the sons of the living God even of those who believe on his name who were
and we have those out there who read the gospel of John and they say well the world there is the
world of Israel and we agree he came to his own but look at what he says about that world
he said to them you are from beneath you're from down yonder I am from above
so Jesus is from a different world than the Israel that he came to
now we need to get that I don't care what brand of Israel you claim to be if you are not claiming
to be Israel in the spirit and there is a difference if you claim to be the Israel that
or you want to go live in Palestine because you're Israel there's nothing wrong with going
over there to live if that's what you want to do but if you think that's what your destined hope
is he says you're from beneath the world beneath you're on the down low as far as the world is
concerned I don't mean in the negative way you're down in the world beneath and that's where all
your thinking is everything about you is all about this world below you feel like you're in captivity
in the world below you feel like you're in bondage in the world below you feel like you
gotta escape from the world below so you can go to another place in the world below
you want people to come and bow down to you in the world below see that's a world Jesus
in his glory has no part of yeah he came into it why did he come into it so he could take people
out of it he says I am in the world but not of the world verse 23 again he said to them you are
from beneath I am from above you are of this world I am not of this world therefore now watch
therefore I said to you that you will die in your sins for if you do not believe that I am he
you will die in your sins they will die in the world beneath see that's Israel's world
old covenant Israel Israel in the flesh that was their world that's the world that Jesus came
to he was in it but he was not of it and he says he has a kingdom that's not of this world
now watch John 18 and verse 36 my kingdom is not of this world it's not a kingdom of the world
but there are people out there who want to make it a kingdom of the world beneath
they want to sit a pretty little old throne over there in Palestine and want Jesus to come
and sit on a throne in a world that he does not even belong to I'm not of this world I'm from
not from beneath but they want to pull him into the world beneath because that's where
their thinking is that's where their mind is as far as worlds are concerned their bottom feeders
he said to them you are from beneath you are from the place that Jesus is not from
I am from above you are of this world I am not of this world and he wasn't talking about
a sinful immoral world he was talking about that covenant world that all the Jews were part of
but he says I'm not a part of it I came to it but I'm not part of it and he says therefore I said
you will die in your sins for if you do not believe that I am he you will die in your sins
now that's about all the time that we have for today but we're going to pick up on this
on next week and we're going to continue to talk about that world beneath and the world above
and that Jesus was going to the father who sent him and that's where they couldn't come
because they did not believe and if they didn't believe and died in their sins they were unable
to come but we're going to see what he says further about this matter and talk about it
next week now I mentioned to you earlier that I wanted to share something with you about this book
which is will planet earth be destroyed and it is a book that people are really really enjoying
because it goes into just about all the passages in both the old and new testament that talk about
what people have come to believe is the end of the world and not only does it deal with those
passages in both the old and the new testaments it has a complete breakdown or exegesis if you please
of second peter chapter three and that is a big one that people believe is talking about the
end of this material world but you see we've just seen the lord talk about two worlds a world
beneath and a world above and that's what this book is all about when you get down to the brass
of it it's going to help you understand why jesus is not a part of that world that was beneath
because that was the world that was going to come to an end but you can read all about it in this
book with very detailed explanations but very clear and precise ones and that's why people
