So, after yesterday's late night ambush against the Dodgers, L.A. fit in the Cubs for dentures
tonight.
A 12-4 final.
This was not how Craig and the fellas drew it up, and all the fans that we've heard so
much about, they apparently thought that this one was clearly over.
As it was, an 8-run victory for the Dodgers, but fans, they were headed for the exits way
earlier than that.
There's going to be a rubber game, and that goes down tomorrow.
Game 2 of the series going in favor of Dave Roberts and company.
With that said, come on in.
This is Cubs Post Game Live, presented by Flight by Yingling, the next generation of
light beer.
I'm Cole Wright.
That's Elyse Menneker and Elyse.
The 10-game winning streak.
It came to an end, but the good news is tomorrow's a new day, and they can start up a brand new
one, right?
Yeah, and just like that.
You know, we were enjoying all the wins last night, just between the offense and the defense.
And then today, the Dodgers' offense showed up, and it was tough to keep up with, because
when you have, was it 14 hits in the game?
A whole bunch of hits.
14 hits.
Yeah.
Yeah, I mean, so they put the pressure on, and eventually, you know, and still, the final
score, the Cubs had a chance, so it might not look like it from the final score, but
there was a prime opportunity, and then once they didn't capitalize, it really just got
out of hand.
Yeah, the bottom of the fourth, that seemed insurmountable.
We saw six hits, six runs scored, a four to three.
That's what ended the inning, but right here, it seemed like an avalanche.
Colin Raig, he couldn't get out from the storm, and it just continued.
Yeah, so Hassan Kim is their on-base machine, and so he's who really gets it going there
in that six-run fourth for the Dodgers.
Javier Assad comes in with relief, can't shut the door.
Just too many pitches over the plate, and that's really when the Cubs' pitching ran
into trouble.
Colin Raig was doing a nice job of working the edges, and then as it's second, third
time through, then they're starting to connect, which we know that that can happen with Colin
Raig, but did a nice job starting it off.
So this is what I'm talking about with all the hits, and particularly look at that seven
through nine, or even six through nine.
I mean, they had half the hits.
They had six RBIs, so they're knocking in half the runs.
So when the bottom of the order is doing damage like that, and then turning over to the top
with this Dodgers lineup, that's just going to be hard to beat, especially when you don't
capitalize on the opportunities that you have, like the Cubs didn't do in that six, because
that was really their prime opportunity, and then after that, it was just tough to come
back.
Yeah, when you have bases loaded in the top of the six, and then you punch out back-to-back
times, and then dribble back to the pitcher, that's an opportunity that was squandered,
at least.
Yeah, and more than anything, you want the ball put in play.
You want to make something happen.
You know, the Cubs have done a really good job of that when it was during their win streak,
and unfortunately here, this is just a slider that Dansby swings through, same thing for
Pete Crow Armstrong, and then Miguel Amaya is the last hope, and he puts it in play,
but against 100, it's hard, and you know, just an easy play for the pitcher.
So, that was one of the more disappointing moments, just because, yes, the score was
eight-to-four, but man, when you have three chances like that, and with the way the guys
have been swinging it, especially Dansby, you're thinking almost they can cut that lead
in half, at least.
Even if you could have chipped away and just scored two, possibly three runs, that would
have been what you were looking for, but one thing that you love to see in this game is
the way Big Mo played once again.
Moises Baez.
Darrows.
Just continues to drill the ball, driving it to all fours.
I have loved watching him hit from the moment that he has come up.
Even in the minors, it doesn't even have to be, you know, up in the big leagues, but he
has continued it at this level, and that's been the fun part.
And really what stuck out about the at-bats today is he was seeing a lot of pitches.
So in his first two at-bats, he's seen 16 combined pitches, so he's really getting a
good look at Sasaki, connects with this one, hits another home run on the season, everything
is so free and easy with him, but you know, he's also really calculated at the plate.
Even though we might not see the wheels turning, he's evaluating, he sees the pitches, his
back-to-ball is just so good and his timing is so good that when he connects, it's easy
power or it's easy hits.
I mean, that's how he's making it look right now.
So he was definitely part of the beginning when you're scoring the runs and you're trying
to come back, that he's part of that and he's doing that consistently.
And he definitely thinks hitter-ish.
He jumps in that batter's box and knows, okay, first pitch, more times than not, they're
trying to get that first pitch in for a strike, what am I going to do?
I'm going to cook him immediately.
Yeah, I mean, he just has such a good eye and a good idea of the strike zone and knows
where he can do damage.
So it's not often that you see him taking swings at pitches that he's not even close
to, whether he's following them off, watching a ball go by, or putting a good cut on the
ball.
I mean, he's constantly just figuring out a way of how to get on base, usually hitting
his way on base.
And so, I mean, for a young hitter, I just love watching him because everything about
his game is so smooth.
It's like so free and easy.
I remember I had heard something that Nico Horner had said, that you almost can get jealous
watching a player like him, because when he's at the plate, the effort seems so low, but
yet the results are so high.
And their effort is there, it's just the way he makes it look is so fun to watch.
So no doubt at the beginning of this game, that was a highlight.
Like you say, do we ask a dolphin why they swim, or an eagle why it fly, or why he hits?
No, it's what they were born to do.
Unfortunately, today, not able to push enough runs across to defeat those reigning back-to-back
World Series champion Dodgers.
But tomorrow, it's a new day, and the fellas, they're looking to go 2-1 versus this L.A.
squad.
We'll continue to let you know how everything's going, and we'll show you how everything unfolds
tonight.
That's next, right here on Cubs Postgame Live.
