Vy and some folk songs are sung by Vietnamese people living in Nghe An and Ha Tinh provinces
in the northern central region of Vietnam.
While an exact creation date for Vy and some has not been able to be identified,
it is known that these cultural activities have been practiced for many hundreds of years.
The creators of these expressive folk songs are the peasants, handicraft makers and fishermen
of the region. Vy adopts the free singing style while chanting in folk verses with six and eight
syllables, two seven six and eight syllables and variants of six and eight syllables sung
with the dialects of the Nghe region. The sum singing style involves talking with cadences
in folk verses with five syllables.
In order to express their inner feelings, a person can sing either Vy or some,
although both can be sung in the one song, especially in the alternative singing between
boys and girls. Vy and some folk songs are performed in various contexts such as during
field or handicraft work. They can be sung to confide in and share with friends or entertain the community.
The Vy and some folk songs sung with the most vitality are the alternative songs
in which Nghe Tinh people are best able to express their intelligence and spirit.
Singing of the fabric weaving guild, Hurung Vy, is one particular way of alternative singing
whose manner and literary lyrics are particularly sophisticated due to the participation of some
Confucian scholars in them in past centuries, such as the great writer Nguyen Du and strong-willed
scholar Phan Boi Chau. Composed and sung for hundreds of years, there are tens of thousands
of lyrical versions of Vy and some folk songs, each containing significant historical, cultural
and social values. The Nghe Tinh people regard their Vy and some folk songs as special cultural
property of their homeland, which they always express pride in and pass down to the following
generation. Life in modern day Nghe Tinh has changed a lot, however Vy and some folk songs
still resound in the voices of the Nghe Tinh people's spirit.
In addition to their folk performances, Vy and some have also been recreated as art performances
for the stage that are rich in content. Vy and some folk songs truly have their foothold
in contemporary life.
