Video from a home surveillance cameras show the bear rummaging through a trash can in West Vincent Township.
Well, now to the search for a black bear on the move in Chester County.
This video here showing the hungry bear rummaging through a trash can in West
Vincent Township tonight. Police are warning residents
keep those garbage cans secure. Action News reporter John Paul
live with all of the details and yeah you know tighten them up maybe don't put
them out tonight until they figure this out.
Okay you gotta be careful for sure. We looked around for that bear today. We
didn't spot him but I just found out from the
game commission he was spotted about five miles from where I'm standing in
Euclid Township just recently but before that
it was not far from where I'm standing. He's been seen in some neighborhoods
near where I am right now in West Vincent Township and as you mentioned
he's just hungry. Just still kind of in shock.
I've never had a bear in my yard. But that changed for Amanda Morgera last
night when this black bear was spotted rummaging through the garbage outside of
her home in West Vincent Township. You can see it knock over her trash can
and pull out bags with its teeth. It looked like he was having a little
picnic under the tree. Literally ate a whole watermelon like
there was just pieces of all the food that was in the trash.
And that's what it's after food. Trash cans are an easy target for the
relatively large bear but it'll eat pretty much anything.
Neighbors have been posting pictures like this one
showing smashed bird feeders nearby. So walking around
looking for food basically going through trash cans, bird feeders,
anything it can get a hold of quick. West Vincent Township police are warning
people about the bear roaming around Chester County.
They're asking people to keep an eye on their pets, clean outdoor cooking areas
and keep the pet food indoors. But most importantly
don't approach the animal. Now if you look closely at the video you can see
the bear's ears are tagged. I talked to the Pennsylvania Game
Commission and they tell me that could mean a number of things.
It could have been trapped before or even tagged as a cub. They're trying to
track it now to get a pattern to uh be able to possibly trap it. Now there
have been bears in this area in the past but it has been a while.
Morgara is hoping this bear doesn't pay her another visit
so she's gonna move those trash cans. We'll probably bring them in the garage
tonight or he'll be back for a snack. That is a
good idea. Now it probably won't be back at her house because
it's moving south from what I'm told by the Game Commission. They have been
spotting it in different areas. It's been in several townships so far
and they think he's traveling at night so that's when you need to kind of keep
an eye out especially for those pets. It might be a good idea to put those
trash cans somewhere secure. We're live tonight in
West Vincent Township. John Paul, Channel 6 Action News.
Yeah John, trash cans and anything he might want to snack on.
Thank you.
