The best kind of travel is about the people you meet. After making it to the geographical heart of Panama, I was lucky enough to be shown around by a new friend, Elisa. This video is all about the joy of connecting with a local rider and experiencing a place through their eyes. The Penonomé region is known for its highlands, challenging hills, and scenic, twisty roads.
Are we there? Oh my God! I need a hairdryer. Soon.
And I'm all packed up. Nearly. We're nearly good to go.
This was an amazing experience. Thank you David for having me here. David is not here.
He's the property owner. This is unofficial campground. So I guess if you want to stay
here you have to get in touch with David through Instagram. This is the way he rolls.
Unfortunately David wasn't here. I was here with his doggy and we had a wonderful time
and now it's time to hit the road. So, Elisa, who I'm supposed to meet on the
road today, not too far because she sent me her live location. Are we going to meet on
the highway? Yep. She's not too far from me now. Coming from opposite direction. And then
we're going to meet up and go that way. Is that her? No, that's not her. No, definitely
not her. We're going to meet in this town. She's very close. Oh, that's her. That's her.
I'll just wait here. Hello. Thank you for coming to see me all this way from Panama.
Welcome to Panama. Muchas gracias, amiga. Thank you. Nice to finally meet you. Yes,
yes, I know. How many kilometers did you do today? Yeah, I stopped many times. Yeah, sorry,
I didn't know you were going to leave so early. I would leave early but I was taking my time
and stuff. All right, so now we're going to go for a little ride into the mountains.
I hope it's not going to be so hot. Mucho calor. I hope it's not going to be so hot.
Hi. Hi. Welcome to Panama. Muchas gracias. Yeah. All right, let's do it. Our first stop.
Yes, of course. But where are we now? Now we are in Peronomé. This is a city from
in the middle of Panama. We have some geographical. So this is like geographically, apparently
the middle of Panama. Yes. Yes. It's as close to the to the end of the country as to the
Costa Rican border, right? Yes. We are in the middle of. I made it to the middle. Great
achievement. And maybe I'm going to recommend to visit the Picacho de Ola. This is a little
bit back, but you have to see it. So now we have a kind of like a celebration. It's
Sunday, so we don't know what's going on. But we are very close to the Corpus Christi,
this Christian holiday. So maybe something like that or something from the town. But
they have some dances and customs and celebration and cultural meeting. I don't know. Yeah,
like a performance. Yes, like a performance. Like a folk dance. Yes, a folk dance. Let's
let's check it out. Yes.
This is like a health. Charity? Yes. And they have some activities, yeah, insurance, food.
Right. So this is a charity day. We worked it out.
Ah, that little roundabout. Yes. I see. Yes.
That's the globe. And in the middle is Panama. And this is the middle of Panama. This is
so cool. Clearly, this is an important town. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Centro Geografico de la
Republica de Panama. There we go. We're here. It is truly that little hall. It's us. Right.
Makes sense.
Hi. Australia. Australia.
So good.
Chile is so popular today. Yes.
That was a cool experience. Right.
So now we're going.
I think a little bit higher up to this town in the mountains.
It's okay. This road is much better than the highway. Feels cooler.
Elisa! Elisa! For me, no.
No. I won't fit there. I'll push you out. There's no way I won't fit with my panniers
here. I'm very wide, you know. Wide? Yeah, yeah, yeah. I'm going to cross and you'll
be here because I have to. No, I can push you out. Yes, I know. I mean, you can cross
here if you want to cross, but I will be struggling. Maybe this is a little far to me, so I'm going
to cross and go on. But because there was this road was following. I don't know. I'm
not sure. Is that your GPS? Because my GPS was saying go that way. Yeah. Okay. Okay.
Yeah. So I'll turn around and we go in the other way. Yes. Even if I fit, it will be
very, very tight. I'm very like, like, no, I don't think we'll be like literally scratching.
No, I think I want it like, like I'm like literally like that much, you know, on each
side. It's amazing. I really, really. This is new for me. Yeah. No, but I know like my
GPS was telling that way. Okay. I'm going. Okay. No worries. You do that.
He will be still fine, but it's just that narrow. Yeah. No way. Well done. You of course
you can't see it, but are we going to climb that hill? There's a road that's literally
going up and it's a very steep road. And of course on the camera, you won't be able to
see how steep that is, but I'm here to tell you it's very steep. Okay, here we go. We
started. This is steep. I don't think, you know, I don't, I think, I don't, I don't think
you realize how steep. Whoa. And we just keep going up. I don't know. Like I'm trying to
make a point of reference to show the steepness, but I don't think I'm able to do that. But
anyhow, it's very, very steep. And here at the top, we have a, do you call that windmill?
Ah, temperature dropped down to 26. It's very pleasant now. We're at the top. Whoa. And
now we're on the top of the hill. We have this view. I know it's cloudy, but it's very
spectacular because it's just like, it feels like, well, we're no longer on the top of
the hill, but just this vast, open space. Nice. Where are we now? We are in Toabere.
This is a mountain of Penomeco Cocle. We have a eolic park, you know, for the clean energy,
for, for the energy light. I don't know. Here? Yeah. The big fan. Ah, the fan. Oh, yes, yes.
Like a mill, windmills. Yeah. We're quite high. Hey, what's the elevation here? Because
the temperature dropped. Only? Well, we only on 200, but it's nice, pleasant 26 degrees.
It's not so humid. It's so nice. But the hill here, so, but a lot of bikers are doing this
road because it's just like beautiful pavement, nice twisties. And then you have that hill
that way. Wow. Are you going on top of the mountain? Like a parque de diversiones, like,
you know, a Disneyland. Yeah, yeah, yeah. From the motorcycles. For sure, for sure.
Well, so that was a nice detour. So we're going back now and you're going to head to
Panama City. And now we'll actually head back where I came from nearly because I just got
a fantastic recommendation from Elisa. So I have to see this place. And we'll meet again
later. I'm sure in Panama City, we'll catch up, we'll do it. When we meet in Panama, maybe
we can, you know, I can show you many places. Yes, we'll do that. So to be continued. But
meanwhile, let's go back. Yeah, let's go back. And this guy is just standing there, not looking.
I'm like, how about you help? No, no, no. And now I'm going to struggle. I'm going to
go to the top so I can do it. This is pretty. Yeah, yeah, yeah, for sure. Look at this beautiful
viewpoint. So this is Tuabrem. This is in the height of Peronomé. One of many heights
in Peronomé. This is an eolic park for the electricity. And this is a very beautiful
place. We have a very the highway here. Very, you know, very curvy. Yeah, it was absolutely
it's very cool for a bike ride. This is the whole region. And it's it's very remote. I
must say there's not like many villages here in the mountains. No, it's very lonely. No,
very, very small population. Very far away. They have to walk a long distance. They are
very, you know, isolated. Yes, very, very, very. Okay, time to head back.
We're saying goodbye, but we're going to see each other later. We have a very good day.
Thank you for being my tour guide. I would never know where to go. So I'll see you later.
That's okay because we're going to see each other soon in Panama. I'm going to stay with
Elisa. She invited me to her home. It's so nice of her. And now I'm going to do quick
shopping and we're going camping and hopefully maybe swimming. Maybe. Maybe.
