Here comes the brainchild, the absolute masterpiece of the man who revolutionized
home-built aviation forever, the mythical Quickie Q1 by Bert Rutan. If you want an airplane that
literally looks like a Star Wars spaceship but that you can build in your garage without having
to sell a kidney, this machine will leave you breathless. It is a single seater with a tandem
wing configuration where the front wing magically doubles as the landing gear. It is a stroke of
true engineering genius that not only steals every single look but was created with the
idea of squeezing out every last drop of aerodynamic efficiency while spending the
bare minimum. Its construction is the perfect introduction to the world of composite materials
but in the most drastically simple and economical way possible. For this plane,
Rutan popularized the moldless method. This means you can completely forget about spending a fortune
on expensive tools or molds. Basically, you are going to cut foam blocks, shape them into the
desired aerodynamic form, and then simply cover them with fiberglass and epoxy resin. It is
literally like making a giant surfboard. The assembly is so fast and intuitive that the
original prototype was built in just about 400 hours of work. You don't need to know about welding
or rivets, just cutting foam and applying resin. And when you see its numbers, you realize this
plane breaks the rules of what is possible for so little money. It is an extreme featherweight
with an absurd empty weight of about 243 pounds, 110 kilograms, and its gross weight reaches just
480 pounds, 118 kilograms. Because it is aerodynamically perfect, an engine with just
18 horsepower is enough. Yes, almost the power of a lawnmower or a super cheap industrial engine
to push it to a brutal cruise speed of 121 miles per hour, 195 kilometers per hour,
and a top speed of 126 miles per hour, 203 kilometers per hour. When it's time to fly slow,
it has a stall speed of 47 miles per hour, 76 kilometers per hour. But here is the true madness.
With those tiny 18 HP, it has an amazing range of up to 720 miles, 1,160 kilometers. You're going
to travel from state to state spending way less than you would on a bus ticket. If you're ready
to laminate fiberglass and own the most exotic craft at your airport, I remind you that the
complete plans will be for sale on my website. I leave the direct link in the video description
and in the pinned comment.
