Your home should feel like an extension of who you are and in this video, we're sharing 10 ways to create a truly feminine home that goes beyond just decorating. From colour palettes to sumptuous textiles that invite you to slow down, sensuous touches, whimsical accents, fragrance, soft curves, and more. .
Welcome back to Susie Anderson Home. With Mother's Day approaching, I wanted to share our ideas for
creating a feminine interior, one that feels nourishing, beautiful and multi-sensory. As Jane
Hall, author of Making Space, Interior Design by Women, writes, the interior is never neutral.
It is shaped by those who create and occupy it, expanding the possibilities for reimagining the
So today, let's explore how to shape a space that feels meaningful and authentic to you.
When designing any interior, we often begin by deciding on a colour palette.
Research in environmental psychology shows that colour not only shapes how a space looks,
but how it feels, influencing our mood, cognitive function and even physiological responses such as
Depending on your desired ambience, a room can lean soft and romantic,
minimal and refined, sensual and luxurious or earthy and grounded.
Some feminine inspired colour directions to consider include soft blush, dusty pinks and
mauves for warmth and softness, powdered blue and muted blues to evoke calm and serenity,
sage and earthy greens to bring a grounded, nature-connected feel,
ivory, taupe and soft whites for ease and elegance,
and burgundy and deeper tones to introduce richness and depth, grounding lighter palettes.
Curved organic forms. Next, feminine interiors often embrace softer forms,
expressed through curved lines, organic shapes and fluid natural silhouettes.
In both feng shui and design psychology, curves are associated with calm and comfort.
They echo the forms found in nature, helping to relax the nervous system and create a more
inviting environment. You might introduce this through arched doorways, niches or windows,
round or sculptural mirrors, circular or oval tables,
sofas or armchairs with rounded arms or curved forms, handcrafted ceramics,
and botanical, floral or nature-inspired patterns. Sensuous touches. Next, feminine
interiors move beyond the visual to create an enveloping, multi-sensory feel. Think of
the softness of silk sheets, the warmth of a plush bathrobe, the flicker of candlelight
or the way music can shift your mood. Individually, these elements enhance a space,
but together they create an immersive and nurturing environment.
Some ways to introduce a sensuous quality into your home include tactile interest. Prioritise
comfort through sumptuous materials that invite touch. Silk, cashmere, mohair, velvet, linen and
wool. Light and atmosphere. Rather than relying on a single light source, introduce a warm,
layered lighting scheme with ceiling, wall, table and floor lighting. Extend this through
candlelight or firelight to create a softer, more intimate atmosphere. Luster. Working in
harmony with lighting, luster introduces a sense of romance and luxury. This can be introduced
through crystal glass, warm metals, mirrors, glazed ceramics or the soft sheen of certain fabrics.
These reflective elements help to gently bounce light around a space, enhancing the overall
atmosphere. Scent. Scent is closely tied to memory and emotion, shaping our experience of a space on
a deeper level. For example, one of my favourite scents is Ernesto by Trudon, a richer, more
masculine profile that creates a calm and comforting atmosphere and makes me feel at home.
Living energy. As we've shared before, introducing natural elements into the home helps support
well-being, reduces stress and improves mood. They can also bring softness, beauty and vitality
into a room, whether through fresh flowers, branches, herbs or greenery. Before we continue,

people passionate about styling. Romanticise your space. Another defining quality of feminine
interiors is a sense of whimsy and romanticism. As Elsie DeWolf said, I am going to make everything
around me beautiful. That will be my life. And as we often share through our 5Ls of styling,
introducing something loved is what helps make a space feel personal, warm and beautiful.
Whether you are drawn to more ornamental touches, with gilded mirrors, French
candelabras and vintage decor, or a more pared-back, tranquil, spa-like space,
it's about surrounding yourself with pieces that elevate everyday moments.
Some ideas include beautiful dinnerware, table linen or glassware that enhance everyday meals,
a four-poster or softly-draped canopy bed,
and hand-crafted decor such as paper tea-like votives or special vintage or antique pieces
that tell a story. Daily rituals at home. Lastly, a feminine interior is one that creates
opportunities to pause, reset and savour the present. One of the most powerful ways to do this
is through small, intentional rituals. Taking time to create rituals within your own home,
whether daily or weekly, can shape how you experience your space.
