Does Matthew 24:35 mean to "pass by" or to "pass away" for "all things" mentioned in that text. Some want to reduce the meaning of the text to pass by regarding time. This is 1 of a 3 part lesson which addresses the contextual meaning of pass by and pass away with Scripture references to clarify the meaning.
Hello, I'm William Bell. I want to welcome you to the All Things Fulfilled channel.
And in just a few minutes, we're going to get underway to talk about a passage in Matthew 24
and verse 35. We're going to be looking at the concept of never pass away as opposed to passing
away. We have some who are having some questions about whether or not Matthew 24 and verse 35
teaches that heaven and earth would pass away. And my words will never pass away means to not pass
or simply to pass by as far as a time reference is concerned. And so what we want to do is look
at that from a scriptural perspective, and then let you decide what the information means.
Now, when we look at the term, we have the Strong's G3928, which is paraechomy.
And in its future form, as it is used in the text, it is untying, paralysing time. And
in Matthew 24, verse 35, the text is translated as to pass away. However, we're told that it
doesn't mean to pass away, but that it means to pass by. Now, strangely enough, it's being
stated that the text has nothing to do with the continuation of the blessings for Israel or for
anyone else beyond the fall of the temple in 70 AD. And strangely, those who advocate this
interpretation of Matthew 24, 35, or begin their presentation with a thousand points of light
to include themselves in what they say includes nobody else. And so somehow Israel's salvation
gets transformed into a universal salvation for everyone. And apart from any application to the
word of God, as a continuation of those things that the Lord said would begin
in terms of their consummation and fulfillment for the return of Christ.
Now let's take a look. I believe that this is a real problem because there is no Bible for
this thousand points of light. Now I'm adopting that phrase from, I think it was George W. Bush
who started to use this thousand points of light paradigm. But also what that's saying to us is
that these are some personal experiences and that we're going by this better felt than told
concept as opposed to that, which pertains to the scriptures and the experience of an afterlife
comes through these near death experiences. In other words, people don't really die,
but they come back and talk about what it's like to have an after dying experience and after death
experience. Now, I wonder how can that be? If you don't die, then how are you talking about it?
You know, it's interesting that with the subconscious mind and in our dreams,
where our subconscious is working, we can experience almost anything. I mean,
how many of us have gone to some form of light in our dreams while we're under the power of
our subconscious mind? We're no longer in our state of consciousness. I'm sure that I'm not
the only one who's experienced that. And perhaps you are not the only one who has experienced that
and the experience of flying. I mean, oftentimes I've had dreams where I could fly like a bird.
Weightlessness, et cetera. All of these things can happen in your dreams. And if these are near
death experiences, they're just experiences where people have gone into their subconscious or state
of their subconscious while they're still living and they are experiencing things and they come
back and they call that, okay, I've been on the other side of life. Now I have returned.
I'm not here to talk about any of the occurrences in terms of what constitutes death. I do know
that there are some people who have been claimed to be dead. They had even tied a tag on their toe,
rolled them up in the box and that person was still alive. So there's a lot for us to consider
here when we talk about these states of consciousness, but that's not what I really
want to talk about. We're going to get back to these thousand points of light, these near death
experiences that are being pawned off on us as an experience of the afterlife apart from
the fulfillment of all things. And yet we're being told that Israel's God, who was only for Israel
is now somehow some way blessing all people who were not of Israel. So that seems to be a
possible, but at least at this point it doesn't make any sense to me. If you're going to talk
about this near death experience and call it some powerful thing, on what basis do we have?
We're simply taking everybody's word and you know, you're saying that's good enough for you
to just take somebody's word over the word of God. Now, is it not true that the word of God
actually talks about an afterlife? So why is it that the afterlife that the word of God talks
about is not sufficient, but the afterlife that these individuals who seem to have no relationship
with God based upon the scripture, maybe or maybe not, is more credible than what we find in the
So I want to look at a couple of passages now in Luke 21 in the verses 36, the Bible says,
watch therefore and pray always that you may be counted worthy to escape all these things
that will come to pass and to stand before the son of man. Okay. So here is the coming of the Lord.
This is the fall of Jerusalem. That's the context of Luke 21. It's the same in the synoptic gospels
of Matthew 24 and Mark 13. But here's what the Lord said. He said they were to watch and pray
that they could be counted worthy to escape all these things and to stand before the son of man.
Now the standing before the son of man is an action or an activity that is the result of all
things passing away. It is not what passes away. How could they stand before the son of man? If
that passed away, it would be impossible. The standing before the son of man is a result of
all those things coming to pass. Now let's note something. When we talk about standing before the
son of man, this is what takes place in the age to come. It did not take place in that age.
Resurrection takes place in the age to come. The text says in Luke chapter 20, verse 34,
a familiar text, Jesus answered and said to them, the sons of this age marry and are given in
marriage. But those who are counted worthy to attain that age and the resurrection from the dead,
neither marry nor are given in marriage. The resurrection is in that age. It's not in the
age of Moses. Now the fulfillment of all things takes place. There are things that are passing
away in the age of Moses, but the resurrection is in the age to come. So they were to be counted
worthy to attain that age, the age to come, not the age in which they were living. Look at the
contrast that Jesus is making. He said, those, uh, the sons of this age marry and are given in
marriage. That is an activity that belonged to the age in which they were living. So when the
apostles in Matthew 24 and verse three said, when will these things be and what will be the sign of
your coming and of the consummation of the age, they're talking about what Jesus called in Luke
20 and verse 34, this age in which the sons of this age, Mary, they're not talking about the
age to come because that activity as it related to the leverage marriage law, which was under
Torah does not exist in the age to come. And so those who are counted worthy to attain that age
and the resurrection of the dead, neither Mary nor are given in marriage and, um, nor can they
die anymore for they are equal to the angels and our sons of God being sons notice of the
resurrection. So they are sons of the age to come. And therefore they are sons of the resurrection.
The resurrection belongs to the age to come. It's should be simple to see that because Jesus said,
I am the life and the resurrection and the events of Matthew 24, as we will demonstrate,
were designed that all the old things would pass away so that the life who was Jesus Christ
would come as the life of the age to come. But notice this, we're not looking at a thousand
points of light. Ladies and gentlemen, we're looking at the light of the word of God, the
light of the world. The Bible says, nor can they die anymore. You don't need a near death experience
for that. He says, well, they are equal to the angels and our sons of God are the sons of God,
or our sons of God being sons of the resurrection. So there's a text that tells us that life would
exist in the age to come. That's why Jesus said, pray that you may be able to escape all these
things that will come to pass and to stand before the son of man, standing before the son of man
means they have been raised from the dead. And this is in the age to come after all those things
have come to pass. Then, um, in Luke chapter 18 and verse 28, Luke 18, 28, starting in verse 28,
Peter raised this question. Peter said to the Lord, he said, see, we have left all and followed you.
So he said to them, assuredly, I say to you, there is no one who has left house or parents
or brothers or wife or children for the sake of the kingdom of God, who shall not receive many
times more in this present time. So look at all they were going to get in that present time.
They're going to get houses. They were going to get parents. They're going to get brothers,
wives, and children. But he said, and in the age to come eternal life. So what would they receive
in the age to come eternal life? That wasn't the end of life. It was the beginning of life,
the age consummated. It passed away, but he says in the age to come now, he's talking about time
here because he says in this present time, that's the same thing as the sons of this age in chapter
20. And therefore in this present time, they would receive all those things, parents, mothers,
children, houses, lands, et cetera. But he says in the age to come, they would receive
resurrection. Assuredly, I say to you, there's no one who has left houses,
parents or brothers or wife or children for the sake of the kingdom of God, who shall not receive
many times more in the present time. That was the age in which all things would come to pass
and eternal life in the age to come.
