What is the significance of the Holy Spirit in accomplishing the resurrection? Romans chapter eight gives contextual clues to the manner and time of how the resurrection was accomplished.
Welcome ladies and gentlemen to the All Things Fulfilled broadcast. I'm William Bell and
we are delighted to be with you today looking forward to a great study. We're going to be
talking about the Holy Spirit's work in resurrection continuing on the studies that
we began in Romans chapter 8 looking at verses 10 and 11. Today we're going to sort of finish
up verse 11 and we're going to move on to several of the other verses in the context.
And so we invite you to bring an open Bible, an open heart that loves the Word of God and loves
to study the Word of God, and an open mind so that God can teach you the things that he has
revealed in his Word. And when you do those three things I believe that God will open your
understanding to a better knowledge of the Word of God. And so we'll be getting started just
All right. Well, everybody should have their Bibles, perhaps a pen and paper,
open mind, open heart. And let's see if we can open our understanding to
another study of God's Word. Welcome to the All Bible Prophecy Fulfilled podcast where we talk
about things that pertain to the end time as well as other subjects in the Bible. And today we are
continuing a series of studies which we have been doing on the Holy Spirit. We're looking at Romans
chapter 8 and verses 10 and 11 where the text says, And if Christ is in you, the body is dead
because of sin, but the Spirit is life because of righteousness. But if the Spirit of him who raised
Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your
mortal bodies through his Spirit who dwells in you. Now when we look at these passages as we
have begun to study before, we demonstrated that the body that formed the subject matter for the
text in Romans chapter 8 is the body that Paul mentions in Romans 7 that is connected with sin
and the law of sin and death in his members from Romans 7 and verse 23. He says, But I see another
law in my mind or in my members warring against the law of my mind and bringing me into captivity
to the law of sin which is in my members. And then to express what that means, he tells us in verse 24,
O wretched man that I am, who will deliver me from the body of this death? Now when he says the body
of this death, he's talking about the death that came as a result of the law in his members that
was warring against the law in his mind and was bringing him into captivity to the law of sin
which was in his members. And we demonstrated from Romans chapter 7 verses 7 through 12 or actually
through verse 11 that this had to do with the law or the commandment that came which he thought was
to bring life that was to bring death. And so therefore the commandment came and he died and
that's what he teaches in the in that section of Romans. So this is the death that's being spoken
of and this death is a covenantal body in which the Jews found themselves and from which they
were desiring to be delivered much like the Israelites of old were desiring to be delivered
from the bondage of Egypt. And this period took or this event took a process of about 40 years
in order for them to make the complete transition and transformation from the old covenant to the
new. Now he says when he answers the question who's going to do this, he says I thank God
through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then with the mind I myself serve the law of sin but with the
flesh or the law of God and with the flesh the law of sin. So what was this flesh and this spirit
dichotomy that we found in Romans chapter 8 when in verse 9 or verse 8 he says so then those who
are in the flesh cannot please God. We identify that as the being outside of the ram of Christ
being outside of the ram of the spirit in that realm where man depends upon his own strength
where he has no power through the law to overcome his own strength his own failure and own
shortcomings of the glory of God and therefore the realm of the flesh. It is a covenantal mode
it stands over against the spiritual mode or the mode of the spirit and so we're talking about two
covenantal states one kills and the other gives life but neither is talking about physical death
nor physical life this is the life that is in relationship to God through Jesus Christ our
Lord and as a result of the work of that Holy Spirit the earnest of the Spirit that was poured
out in that first century generation in the last days. Now we have some who will try to develop
or argue that the body in Romans 8 10 and 11 is the physical body of man that these are
individual bodies but that violates the context and we're going to show you as we move further
through the text how Paul continues to talk about the covenantal body that is found in Christ
and that those who are in the flesh not in their individual physical fleshly bodies.
I mean how much sense as we said before would it make to say that those who are in the physical
body cannot please God why we might as well pack up our bags and go home there's nothing we can do
about our condition in sin and in need for salvation because as long as we are physically
in the flesh according to the interpretation of many then we might as well give up but when he
says those who are in the flesh cannot please God he is not talking about a physical body he's not
talking about you in your skin rather he's talking about you in your sin that's the realm of the
flesh that's the realm where the flesh has no power and therefore what the law could not do
in that it was weak through the flesh God did in sending his own son in the likeness of sinful flesh
and for sin on account of sin he condemned sin in the flesh that the righteous requirement of the
law might be fulfilled in us who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the
spirit now the last time i checked i haven't noticed any spirits floating around as opposed
to people walking around in fleshly bodies the realm of the spirit is the realm of God Christ
and the Holy Spirit for example in John chapter 4 when Jesus made the statement that God is a
spirit and he seeks true worshipers to worship him and therefore said God is a spirit and those
who worship him must worship where in spirit and in truth those allocations those allocatives in
they demonstrate the sphere in which God desires service and it is in the realm of the spirit
those outside of God and Christ are in the realm of the flesh and you cannot please God being
outside of the realm of the spirit outside of the realm of Jesus Christ and outside of the realm of
the father there is no pleasing him outside of Christ and so those who are in the flesh cannot
please God that is their covenantal standing that is their relationship with God but also he says
you are not in the flesh so he's writing to some people at Rome and saying to those people you are
not in the flesh now imagine if we sat beside somebody who has skin on their body and we told
now it could be that for some reason they may not be quite totally present but that's beside
the point it doesn't mean that they are not yet alive and human and have their flesh as as far
as their physical bodies are concerned so this text is not talking about physical bodies and
it's not talking about flesh as a manner of life in terms of doing carnal things that we you know
typically would characterize as carnal things filled with you know lust and immorality and
various other things that's not the context here it's the flesh as a realm as a covenantal mode
and then one within that mode may choose to do those things but the point is that is not what
this text is discussing and so he says you are not in the flesh but where in the spirit if indeed
the spirit of god dwells in you so the reason you're in the spirit and not in the flesh
is because the spirit of god dwells in you that's what was stated to those in the first century
when the holy spirit had been poured out it was god's means of sealing them and setting them apart
from those who did not have the spirit and therefore were not his children that's why the
text says if any man does not have the spirit of christ he does not belong to christ he is not his
and you see god did not give the spirit to those under the law he did not give the spirit to those
who rejected jesus as the messiah and wanted to continue following torah as though it was their
means of salvation to them he did not give the spirit and that is one of the ways he was able
to distinguish what the church was able to distinguish that these people under the law
did not belong to jesus the messiah and that's why they met their fate in 70 a.d when the temple was
destroyed and 1.1 million of them were killed and another almost 100 000 were carried off into
captivity and put into slavery so that's what he means they didn't belong to christ because they
were not in the realm of the spirit now he says and if christ is in you the body is dead so because
christ was in them the body was dead what body was that that was the body where death worked that
was the body of sin that was the body that they put off in baptism and were continually trying
to throw off as you read about it in romans chapter 6 where the verse says our old man
was crucified with him in order that the body of sin might be done away those are subjunctives there
and it says that our old man was crucified with him in order that that's the meaning of
the word that as a conjunction of purpose in order that the body of sin might be destroyed
it didn't say that it was destroyed at the point of baptism it was going to be destroyed
at some point in the future and that was the work of the holy spirit that's why he told them in
and the verse is 12 therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body that you should obey it in
the lusts thereof he wasn't talking about their physical body he was talking about that body
that had been put to death that old man that was going to be destroyed and so if christ is in you
the body is dead because of sin but the spirit is life because of righteousness so they weren't
going to die with the body the spirit was going to raise them up out of that body
into righteousness into a new life that was the work of the spirit and hence if the spirit of
him who raised jesus from the dead dwells that's a present tense dwelling dwells in you he who
raised christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his spirit
who dwells in you so we're talking about the body of christ and members within that body
being raised up out of the body of sin and death now notice verse 12 therefore brethren
we are debtors not to the flesh to live according to the flesh now show me a man who is not going to
eat to feed his body who is not going to work to clothe his body who is not going to rest to
recreate his body who is not going to love his body as the bible says in ephesians chapter 5
nourishes and cherishes it even as the lord does the church we love the bodies that we're in so
much so that we're not going to go out and take our own lives and we're not going to allow anybody
else to do it if we can help that and so to tell someone therefore brethren we are debtors not to
the flesh to live according to the flesh means they were not to continue to live as though that
old covenant was not going to come to an end and that life under that old covenant would not come
to an end but to express their hope in the new life that the spirit was bringing about and so
he says for if you live according to the flesh you will die well now suppose a person never
becomes a christian suppose they never accept jesus christ as their lord do you suppose
they're going to live forever physically no they're still going to die but you see with this
situation of being in the spirit if they accepted the spirit they would never die that's the message
of resurrection which jesus taught in john 8 51 and 52 he said to those jews if you continue
in my word you will never see death whoever keeps my word shall never see death well the
jews thought that he had a demon and they said that they said now we know that you've got a demon
because you're saying if a man keep my saying he'll never see death he says what they said
what about the prophets what about abraham abraham and the prophets are dead so what is this
that you're talking about you see they were in the wrong ballpark they were trying to play football
and jesus was talking about baseball he was talking about death that results from sin the
same one that paul was talking about and he said if a man keep my saying he will never see death he
will never be separated from god on the other hand they were thinking it was physical death
and that's why they brought up abraham and the prophets who all were dead physically speaking
and so he says if you live according to the flesh you will die but if by the spirit
you put to death the deeds of the body you will live and thus as they are living in the spirit
they are losing their reflection affection for that old covenant mode unlike a lot of people
can you believe that after the temple has been destroyed for almost two thousand years
the priesthood has been destroyed all the genealogical tables that or tap you know
records that were used to verify a person as a priest and as an authentic priest
with a pure pedigree have been destroyed so that it's not possible to even determine who
is according to the genealogical records after all the sacrifices have ceased that there are people
who still claim they are following the law they are people of god according to the law of moses
and by the way these people when you mention that we are no longer under the law the first
argument they want to throw out is well does that mean that we can
practice a life of sin and the answer to that is no paul even said what should we say then shall
we continue in the sin that the grace might abound god forbid how should we who died to the sin live
any longer in it if you die to sin you don't live in what you died to he made the same argument again
the law has dominion over a man so long as he lives but if death occurs he's no longer under it
and that was the net effect of being baptized into christ they died to the law and to sin
and therefore were no longer to live in what they died to i can assure you of this when you die to
this world and when i die to this world we will not come back and have to pay taxes have to have
a driver's license have to pay mortgages we won't have to do any of that because we will have died
to this life and if we get over on the other side saying look i gotta go pay my mortgage i gotta go
file my income taxes or i've got to do something else that pertains to this life they might send
you back because they would probably think that you're not but that just doesn't happen
you're not coming back that's what god told david through nathan when the child died you can go to
him but he's not coming back here and so there is no such thing if you die to it it's done
and so the scripture says for as many now let me get this again for if you live according to
the flesh you will die but if by the spirit you put to deeds or put to death the deeds of the body
you will live now that live and is is the inheritance that is the life the resurrection
the righteousness and the promise that we've looked at before so when the bible talks about
living here we're still in the context of resurrection now they're already physically
alive so what is how are we going to make this life of the body and this was taking place through
the active ongoing present at that time work of the holy spirit now here's the other side of that
another term for resurrection is son of god the bible says for as many as are led by the spirit
these are the sons of god these are sons of god because the spirit was leading them to
the consummation when they would be considered as full-grown perfected sons of god at the time
paul wrote they were babes they were adolescents if you please growing and that's why the holy
spirit was given to bring them to perfection so they would no longer be children what the bible
calls the nepeoi underage children who could not inherit and hence the spirit was given to lead
them until they reached full-grown age where they could inherit the blessings of god and a part
or one aspect or facet of that inheritance was being a son of god because being a son of god
is equivalent to being raised from the dead they had that in pledge now someone will say well
weren't people under the old testament sons of god they were sons of god in the realm of the
flesh in the realm of the law but remember he said those who are under the law and who are
in the flesh cannot please god so they had to be born again to become sons in the spirit
but they had to grow to maturity because you don't give a baby an inheritance that is illegal
and you can see galatians 4 1 and 2 for that but notice in galatians 3 26 and 27 he says for you
all the sons of god by faith in christ jesus for as many of you as were baptized into christ have
put on christ there is neither june or greek there is neither bond or free there is neither male nor
female for you all one in christ jesus now what was the commonality in all of those before
jew and gentile male and female bond or free none of them could receive the inheritance
here's why the jews could not receive it because under the law they were under age the gentile
could not receive it because they had no hope they were outside of the covenants of promise
the women could not receive it because the inheritance was passed down through the males
unless there were an exception such as in the daughters of zalafa had numbers 34
and thus they had no inheritance under law the male the same as the jew because they were under
age and the slave had no inheritance under the law because he was a slave and slaves do not
inherit and if they were free in other words having purchased their freedom or been released
as a slave they still had no inheritance if they were under age or and or outside of the realm of
israel but when they entered into christ those distinctions all left and now they have become
sons where they are eligible for the inheritance and hence he says and if you belong to christ
then are you abraham's seed and heirs according to the promise well if you do not belong to christ
you are not abraham's seed and you are not an heir according to the promise and those who want
to advocate the law only need to get that message but let's look at luke chapter 21 when we talk
about uh the sons of god or luke chapter 20 excuse me luke 20 beginning at verse 34 jesus answered
and said to them the sons of this age marry and are given in marriage but those who are counted
worthy to attain that age and the resurrection from the dead neither marry nor are given in
marriage nor can they die anymore see there's that same language they cannot die anymore
for they are equal to the angels and are sons of god being sons of the resurrection that was the
of the spirit to lead them to that point where they could be sons of god and sons of the
resurrection now i have a video on youtube called no marrying in the resurrection and um it's been
well received and you might go to youtube look up all things fulfilled and you can pull up that video
no marrying in the resurrection there are also some additional studies uh being done on the topic
but the point being was that there could be no dying in this new age but they had to be counted
worthy in order to get there and he says those who are counted worthy to attain that age being
counted worthy means that those could not marry nor given in marriage he can't be talking about
physical marriage can he because he says you have to be counted worthy and those who are counted
worthy do not marry so if you're married and you're talking about you want to make this physical
marriage it means you are not worthy but see the age was the christian age and he's talking about
the leveret law of marriage which is not practiced in christianity and therefore we have to understand
that distinction but they would become sons of god and that's why in romans chapter 8 he says they
would be the sons of god next he says you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear see
there's the bondage paul talked about but you receive the spirit of adoption by whom we cry out
abba father the adoption is the resurrection romans 8 23 not only that but we also have
the first fruits of the spirit even we ourselves grown within ourselves eagerly waiting for the
adoption the redemption of the body so the adoption is the redemption it's the resurrection
and then finally we have the glory because he says if the children if children then heirs
heirs of god join heirs with christ if indeed we suffer with him that we may also be glorified
together and even backing up one verse the spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are
the children of god and so as sons of god we cry out abba father that's the work of the holy spirit
in bringing about resurrection in the body of christ well that's all the time that we have
for today it's been a pleasure being with you we look forward to being back with you
