This week on OSRL. With fierce summer storms approaching, we work through blazing heat
to put a lid on our house. How's it going everyone? Welcome back to the domestead.
Now if you're new here, my wife and I were building our own home off-grid here in the
Arizona desert. But if you caught our last video, then you know we made some amazing progress.
Jess over here has finished building her massive cob wall going in between the straw bales and the
earth bag dome. Now she's getting ready to put a lime plaster over there to make that rainproof.
I can't wait to see how that comes out. I finished putting cob around the outside of all these earth
bags and kind of filled in this gap here along this window. So if the rains do come,
we should be well protected from getting rains inside the straw bales over here. So I'm really
excited about that. But it's go time. Rains are coming very shortly and part of this is roofed,
but I need to finish the roofing on this. That means I need to get roofing on this top part,
get roofing on the greenhouse, so that we are protected from the monsoon rains. Now it's going
to be here soon, so I figure I got about two weeks safely before rains really start coming down. So
it's not a whole lot of time, so I got to get to it. Let's get it done. Now one of the issues I
have is I need to go get some more supplies to keep working on this, but we have issues with
the trailer and that is the lights aren't working properly. Some of the wiring here has been chewed
up. It's kind of exposed. Some of it has come apart. Basically it's no good. I think I've got
a solution to get this roadworthy again and I'm taking this off. I'm going to take the other one
off over here and then I'm going to try something out. So hoping this works. Wish me luck. All
right, so I've already taken this one off. I got to get the wiring, but the bolts are off. Now we'll
work on this one. I picked these up the other day and these attach to the trailer by magnets
and I got like a little safety lanyard
just in case so that if the magnets do fail there's a backup and they're supposed to operate
wirelessly. So you just attach these onto the trailer. You attach another component into
the where you would plug into the vehicle and it should operate wirelessly. So let's get these
attached and we'll see if it works. Passenger side. We'll attach lanyard there. Driver side.
We'll see how roadworthy this is. Yep, looks good. All right, so I took the trailer out. Successful run.
The lights work pretty good. Got all the lumber I need and I'm ready to get to work. So the lights,
yeah, you would think with just magnets that it might not be that sturdy, but they work pretty
well. Now one caveat, on the dirt roads they did slip around a little bit, but strained it out.
On the regular roads they work just fine. Stayed put. Pretty nice. Nice little addition. I was able
to set it up in like a couple minutes. I think it works well for what we need. All right, so I'm
getting ready to do some painting. I have one of these paint trays. It was like full of paint.
Decided to clean it so I could do some more painting. I just ripped out all the old paint.
I don't know. I always like it when you can just kind of rip out some paint and you get it all in
like one piece like that. I'm easily impressed by things, I guess. I don't know. I got it all in one
piece. I'm so excited. But yeah, then the paint tray here is as good as new and then let's get
painting. Well, it is going to be a hot one today and it's going to be hot for a while.
Temperatures are going to be in the triple digits and I don't know what it is. Once the sun comes up
over the mountains, and I think it's because of our altitude, that sun is just so intense. You
know, that's why we've been utilizing the dome more. Just taking breaks in there. You know,
even though the temperatures are about 100 degrees outside, the temperature in the dome has only
reached about a high of 84 degrees so far, which is plenty comfortable for us. Might be kind of on
the high side for a lot of people, but for us, it's pretty comfortable. You know, we turn on
a ceiling fan and it feels absolutely fantastic. And even sleeping, you know, that makes me very
grateful for the underground bedroom, especially during these summer months. You know, we go down
there to sleep. Temperature is 75 degrees, which is an okay sleeping temperature. Again, we got a
ceiling fan in there too. We turned that on and it's just absolutely some of the best sleep ever.
Very dark. Got the fan going. Feels great. I checked the temperature inside the trailer this morning
and even though the temps cooled down overnight, it still only reached 76 degrees inside the
trailer. So it still didn't get as cool as the underground bedroom. So that's a testament to how
nice that is. I'm going to be adding metal panels to the triangle portion of the roof, that upper
portion. So I'm going to get that braced up. I'm also going to be adding some OSB panels to the
ends of the triangle portion to close those up. So I'm going to try and get that done ASAP, but so
there is a lot to do. And let's get to it. Alright, so I am busy working on the house and man,
you see this? It looks like it could rain. Wow, it is absolutely burning up out here.
It is a hot one. It looks like it's raining over toward the south of us. Now, I don't know if it'll
get here or not, but we could definitely use the cloud coverage, but this is kind of exciting.
I don't know, we'll see. Cross your fingers. Well, this is pretty wild. Winds have definitely picked
up. They're definitely a lot higher than they said they were going to be. Said it's supposed
to be pretty calm, wind's supposed to be two miles an hour, but it's definitely really picked up.
You can even see some dust storms over to the south, just kicking up tons of dust. So,
I don't know, we'll see if this storm comes our way. I mean, the clouds are definitely overhead,
which actually feels pretty good, and we'll see if we get some more rain. So,
I don't know. So, yeah, we'll see what happens. I've been working on this area here, just getting
some more blocking underneath the OSB, just giving a little more support and getting ready to put
more OSB up on the top part of the roof. Yeah, I've been kind of using this area over here
to kind of get up and down from this roof area, but I'll be closing this off tomorrow,
so I'll have to go around the outer edges. So, it's a lot to do, getting some prep work done,
but tomorrow should see a lot of progress. I'm excited. That was crazy. Are you sure you want
to do that? Huh? Are you sure you want to do that? I don't think I can. Well, I got that extra
framing down over that top part of the roof, and I wanted to get that OSB up there, but
looks like the winds are just a little too strong for that right now. So, that's okay.
Plenty of other things to do to get ready, so we're going to get that done. I'm going to prep
some more boards for the other side, get that done, then we'll put up the OSB tomorrow. No
problem with that. No problem with that. Always something to do. Just roll with the weather.
Got her. Got her done. Okay. Here, catch.
Nothing like a little evening garden time, huh? After a hot, hot day. What do you want?
What are you doing?
All right, so I'm getting close to closing this section off. I better plan on a way down before
I put up the next board, and they have no way down from here. I'll have to start calling Jess. Jess,
get me down. All right, I got to move the ladder around, and we'll get this next piece of OSB up.
Yeah, it's kind of weird how we're on two different buildings that we're trying to mesh
into one unit. No, no. I don't have too many. We're running low, so.
Talking to you, and then I go.
Success. Find a nice little cool shady spot.
Oh, there she is.
So those ends are closed off, and man, I think I am ready to move on to the metal panels, right?
I think so. Yeah, so I got some of that covering over the OSB that should protect it from the sun,
any rain, so we should be good. We should be good there. It's very exciting. We're going to have to
kind of work around this a little bit, so rain is coming up next week. That's going to be the start
of the monsoon pattern, so there's a good chance we could be getting some rain next week, so we're
just going to have to roll with a little bit and just kind of work around that. I think we'll have
to do a lot to kind of get ready for the rain. I don't know. It's a good question. Maybe. We might
have to do some. We might have to protect that outside wall. I know you got some work that you're
going to be starting on over over there that might need to get protected, so yeah, we'll see. We might
have to scramble a little bit to protect some of this stuff. I don't know, so stay tuned. I can't
wait to see what she does with that wall. Very excited. I can't wait to start putting up that
metal. It's all coming together, y'all. Definitely give this video a thumbs up,
and we'll catch you on the next video. Bye!
