A U.S. company is testing a brain implant in China as the two countries compete in a fast-moving
and controversial new tech frontier. This technology, known as brain-computer interfaces
or BCIs, could transform medicine. But it's also raising serious ethical questions.
Massachusetts-based startup Axoft says it's tested its device in 11 patients so far,
including one in Shanghai. It plans to expand trials in China this year.
The company also announced Wednesday that it raised $55 million to speed up development.
It's the first time a U.S. brain implant company has disclosed testing in China.
The Chinese regime has made brain science a priority, including it in its five-year plan
in 2021. Axoft says one reason it chose to test in China is the speed of the regulatory process.
This technology could allow paralyzed patients to control computers using only their thoughts.
However, critics warn the technology could open the door to privacy concerns and data
security risks. It's also raising questions about how the human brain could be modified.
Dozens of companies across the U.S., China and Europe
are now competing in the space, including Elon Musk's Neuralink.
