And another milestone on my road the world trip completed! In this episode, I’m taking you on the last ride on the legendary Pan-American Highway in North America all the way to the Darién Gap. That’s the end of the road before the road starts again in South America. It was very interesting to see how the road ends.
Good morning. I'm in the process of packing up. It's very early, 7am. I got up very early today.
But I tell you, I'm still trying to work it out why everyone came for the night here. Because
it was just empty. There was no one here. And the moment I arrived, half of the village came
and then they occupied that shelter, this shelter and that shelter. And I'm thinking,
is it because I'm here and there is this like kind of a security or is it because
they are going to show me their crafts? I said I'm very interested. Or maybe it's Friday,
so they're reserving those shelters so they can sort of like show their crafts. Maybe people
are going to come because it's weekend. I really don't know. I was just thinking,
what the hell is going on here? Because I definitely didn't have any privacy. I felt
watched all the time. It doesn't happen often that a solo woman on a motorcycle
comes in to the village. So it's kind of interesting for them. I know, I get it,
I get it. It was actually a wonderful experience, but I'm just trying to work out what's going on.
So anyhow, I'm going to pack up now. Then we're going to see the crafts
and then we're going to go to the end of the continent. It's a very important day today.
Hola, buenos días. Right, so I think this way. I saw a table with the crafts. There they are.
Okay, so what do we have here? So we have this. Then we have, oh wow, look at this.
This plate is beautiful. I really like this one. And then there's jewelry. Look at that.
Wow, they are very talented, hey? That place is awesome. And then look, there's like a little
mask. How cool. And then the jewelry like that. Esta seis, si? Por favor. Okay, grab that one,
seis. I don't know if I ever wear it, but I want to support them. Veinte, gracias. Okay,
I got a lot. I got a lot. So I got, oh, sorry, but let me present you. So I got a lot,
but it's okay because I'm flying to Europe so I can take it. I got this plate. It's so beautiful,
right? I got this one. That's very cute. And I got that one. This is very cute. And look,
pirate earrings. They're so beautiful. I'm not sure if I'm ever going to wear them,
but I want to have them. That's it. End of our shopping. We have to pack up. And they were so
kind to me. They gave me this one for free. So I'm gonna put it on Chile. Chile, this is for you.
Where should we put it? Where would you like it? I have an idea. Okay, let's go this way,
like that, and then here. Oh, honey, you're gonna look so pretty.
Time to go, Chile. Are you ready? Yeah, I'm ready. It's so hot right now. We only have 80km
to the end of North America. Well, to the end of the road of North America. You know what I mean.
Let's go. Wow, it's still not raining. Oh, Chile, way suddenly, so heavy. Adios. Muchas gracias.
We have an electric pole, and then we have this. Whoa. And then we go this way,
and then this way. And we're on the main road. Adios. That was an awesome experience.
Okay, this will be a good thumbnail, don't you think? Here we go. How's that?
Lucky the road is very quiet.
End of America.
Am I in the frame? I think so. The legendary... Oh, wait, wait, wait. The legendary Pan-American
Highway. Numero uno. This is the last village in Panama. What's here? A cemetery.
It's getting crowded. Ah, so this town is right on the...
It just feels like a historic village. I'm not sure if it's historic, but it feels this way.
Is this one way? I do not know. Maybe not. Are these cops? I think so. There were cops
on bicycles. First time I saw cops on bicycles. This is it, Chile. End of the road. At the end
of the road, we have a church. That's it. We can't go further. There's a church. Oh,
there's like a footpath there, but that's about it. And we have made it to the end of the road.
This is it. This is where the road finishes. Here we have a church. And past that church,
there is a river. And past the river, there's Durian Gap. And past that,
it's Colombia, right? Basically, this is the only gap in Pan-American Highway,
right? This is where the road ends, and it picks up in Colombia. And the reason for that is,
well, actually, there are a few reasons why there is no road between Panama and Colombia.
So apparently, geographically, it's very challenging to build a road there because
it's all swamplands and stuff like that. Then I think politically, they wanted to keep it this
way. And yeah, and this is just the way it is. There is no road. So at the moment, the only way
to get your bike from one continent in another is to actually put it on a ship or fly it.
Back in the days, there was that option that people were putting bikes on the sailboats,
and they were sailing them back and forth. But you can't do it. And this is because of,
I believe, paperwork in the port. People just don't want to deal with sailboats in the port,
I think. Something like that. But informally, I've heard some people still doing it. Of course,
I'm not going to do it because I already have anxiety when I think about Chile being on a
little sailboat. And there were a lot of accidents that bikes ended up in the sea.
True story. A lot of them. So Chile will be sent on a plane. She likes flying. She did it once.
Her first shipment was from Australia to Korea. So now she's going to fly again. But that's in a
later episode. I'll explain everything. And here, there's a bridge, which I would like to check out
because we'll be able to see the river. So we're walking now. This is a walking bridge.
It's very busy. Very shaky. Very nice.
Whoa, whoa, whoa. This is very shaky. Righto. Chile. Let's go to the sign now.
Take a picture. Adios. And then we're done here. We're going to head back.
Can I get out of here? This way? Not sure. I need to get a cold drink. Still thirsty.
All the roads here are concrete. So interesting. Cold drink, please. Supermercado or something.
Oh, we're on the main road now. And I think there is a big-ish store here with the fridges.
I feel so much better now.
All right, Chile. Now I'm ready to go to the sign. It's around the corner, literally.
It's very busy today. It's Friday, but it feels like
Sunday or something. And this is where the sign is. Ta-da. I guess that's how we're going to place
Yes. Who's going to take a picture of us, Chile? I think it's a tripod time.
Looking good, Chile. Looking good. I like.
Okay, what's your name?
Okay, come here. Now, this leg here and this over and hand here. Okay, there you go. Good girl.
Yay. Okay, let me film this.
Okay, how's my hair?
Hold on, I'll go through the other side.
Hold on, hold on. You good? Yeah, yeah, exactly the same thing. Just
grab here and come down again. And this is Eddie, my cameraman. Eddie,
mucho gusto. Thank you so much for your work. Thank you guys. Thanks for stopping.
Thank you. Wait, how's my hair? It's a very important moment, you know.
We made it to the sign. Bienvenidos. So this is how it works.
This is kilometer zero. And to Alaska, we have 12,580 kilometers. We've done way more than that
because we went to Alaska two years ago already. And so much has happened in between.
I'm not going to make it to Panama City today. So we're going to stop in Hotel Bellagio.
Some riders recommended me this hotel because it's got a safe parking.
And from what I can see, it's got a pool. And I barely need to have a swim because it's so
humid and hot. I'm dying. And Hotel Bellagio is only 50 kilometers away. Perfecto. Chillie, go.
Oh, ventilation. Please, ventilate me. I love this gear. The moment you stand up,
everything gets ventilated. So good. Ah, it's in the background there. I see, I see.
On the right. Can you see what I see? The pool's that way. This is fantastic. This is fantastic.
How about this? My hair? Oh, it's bad, isn't it? Anyhow, so this is the scenario.
Chillie's parked under the shelter. And this is my habilitation.
This is my room. It's very, very large. There is a bed and there's air con. I'm
very happy about that. $45. Rest my case. How's my hair? Good morning. We are ready
to do our last stretch. So we're heading back to Panama City today. And I'm gonna
head straight away to a car wash so Chillie can be washed because she got a little bit
dirty on this road. This is your spot. This is proper washing Chillie. Oh my God,
what a great service. I can't believe it. When we wash you, we do it properly.
Eyes bright like a diamond. Unbelievable.
Every time she's washed like that, she just looks like a brand new bike. Honestly,
she's such a great shape. BMW bikes are such a good quality bike.
Eight years on the road, 180 kilometers, and she still looks great. You know?
So this is it. This is our very last ride in Panama. No, I am not sad. I will reunite with
Chillie very soon. But yeah, I am always very sad when I have to leave her behind.
It's okay. It's okay, Chillie. We can do this. Hey guys, thank you so much for watching. If you
