A sudden rush to the ER, a 24 week delivery and a fight that few babies survive. The odds were stacked against Action News reporter Sharifa Jackson and her baby.
Well then, a member of the Action News family is sharing her incredible story with the nation.
Yeah, our great colleague Sharipa Jackson's daughter Arya defied the odds of being born
at just 24 weeks. Today the family appeared on the Tamron Hall show.
Christie is back with more from this emotional interview we were all watching in the newsroom.
Yeah, I don't think there might have been a dry eye at anybody's desk either. Now,
it was a month-long intense battle for baby Arya, but the eight-month-old proved that
even with the odds stacked against her, she is a fighter. Action News reporter Sharipa
Jackson and her beautiful family shared Arya's resilient story and life now outside of the
NICU on Tamron Hall. What does life look like today?
We're trying to figure out our new normal, living outside of the hospital now. So, I mean,
it's been great. We can take her for walks, we can play with her whenever we want to,
we can hold her whenever we want to, and she's developing great.
Baby Arya spent her first 236 days of life in the hospital. She was born at 24 weeks,
weighing just over a pound, after Sharipa unexpectedly went into labor last August.
Arya was treated for a heart defect, severe lung disease, and received multiple blood
transmissions, and she was finally discharged early last month. It was a pinch-free moment
Sharipa and Yaro say they weren't sure they would ever experience.
You get in the car. What happens in the car?
We get her in the car and then finally we're driving home and we're like,
whose baby is sitting right next to me here in this car?
Where are we going with this? We're taking her home?
Yeah, yeah.
She's finally home with us.
She's been home for three weeks now. Sharipa and Yaro say those months in the NICU gave
them a crash course on how to care for their daughter at home. Sharipa even posted this
photo today of baby Arya in her new onesie, which was a gift from the show for making
her national debut. It was so great. What a precious little girl. She's so cute.
