My name is Danny Urbanus and I'm from the Netherlands.
My specialty is card magic and I practice for thousands of hours.
When I do grocery shopping, I practice.
When I walk around the town, I practice.
Basically, I practice everywhere.
Doing magic when you're walking is not easy
because your whole body's moving
and you actually do need to pay attention to traffic and other kind of stuff.
So when you actually stand still, like when I'm on stage, it's way easier.
When you approach someone with a deck of cards,
you're a magician because you have a deck of cards in your hand.
People immediately expect magic.
So that skepticism kicks in.
Is it a trick deck?
What are the rules?
But if you surprise them with magic, with things they know and understand,
shoelaces, straws and rubber bands is more powerful.
So pen and teller, I'm going to show you some magic from a different perspective
and I think you will be amazed.
Excited to be here with all of you and everyone tuning in from home.
I'm standing here in front of two very knowledgeable magicians, Pen and Teller.
I find magic in the simplest things, like a rubber band and a pen.
So the thing with knowledge about magic is that it changes your perception of it.
What's amazing to all of you, seeing by the reaction,
is actually a day-to-day job for me.
It all comes down to the point of view.
And I don't mean that this is an optical illusion,
because even though the bands look like they're not linked,
they actually are linked.
But it only will last a moment.
So let me give you an example.
Teller, would you please join me on stage?
Let's sit right here on the chair.
Are you comfortable?
So I'm going to show you the same thing, but from my perspective.
So two rubber bands.
Yes.
Can you hold your right hand like this?
Yes.
And make fists.
Put your thumb and index finger like this.
I'm going to stretch the bands between my hands.
And I want you to pinch the bottom string.
And don't let go until I say so.
Yes.
I'm going to go over your head again.
So I'm going to show everyone here as well.
And I'm going to go over your head.
Then you can hold the bottom string.
And to truly experience it from my point of view,
just go one up.
Then we go one up more.
All the way up.
So you can let go.
Then you hold the head of the strings.
Yes.
Now with your other hand,
hold it up like here.
You can hold it here.
Yes.
Thank you.
So to truly experience it from my point of view,
you can rub with your hand like this.
Just give it a little blow.
And you can let go slowly.
Oh, his face is so puzzled.
You literally did your magic right under his nose.
Yes.
He got probably the best seat in the house.
Are you always ready to perform anytime, anywhere?
I almost have always rubber bands around my wrist.
And yeah, I try always to be ready to show someone if they're asking.
Do you have a big social media presence?
I don't post a lot.
It's more I really like the interaction.
The live interaction.
That's what I think that magic is created for.
Well, it's not a stretch to say that that was an amazing trick.
But let's see if it earned you a Fool Us trophy.
Are you ready?
Penn and Teller.
Danny, rubber bands.
That's all you brought us.
Yes.
Few rubber bands.
The other big prop you had your big stage illusion prop was a pen.
And then you had rubber bands.
This is an act that what tractor trailers to carry this thing around.
It's just beautiful.
You know, we do this thing on our show where we'll see people
that do something that looks a little bit off to us a little bit wonky.
We see the move.
And then we go through the whole act and kind of pretend we didn't.
What I loved about this act is we didn't see anything unnatural or uncomfortable at all.
It was just magic.
Furthermore, I got interested in rubber band magic.
I saw someone do it.
I loved it.
And by teenager, Moxie and I sat down with a book for a few afternoons.
And we learned stuff which none of which I remember.
And on top of that, there's stuff you were doing that we never saw anywhere.
There's stuff you invented in this, right?
Yes, the whole act.
The whole act is completely.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Because even the stuff that I tried to learn and failed was not in your act.
So I got to say, Danny, it's rubber bands.
But we've been fooled by a chicken.
So I'm not humiliated by this at all.
I am proud to say that was a perfect magic routine.
And you fooled us.
