Hey, how are you doing, man?
Doing good.
It's nice and cool here.
Hey, did you have a party in Chama not too long ago?
Uh-uh.
Oh, for Chama days.
Maybe it's not.
Yeah.
It was really a small barbecue.
Tony was just in Chama
and everything.
Yeah, we used to have property up there.
Oh, really?
Where at? We were right on Heron Lake.
Oh, nice.
On Laguna Beach? In Laguna Beach?
Uh-huh. Yep.
Shoot, man, I haven't been in there
since my dad took me up in there.
Really?
There was no houses. It's been a while.
Yeah, because it's gated on.
I mean, I know a lot of people in there,
but I've just never gone in there.
I don't have no business there.
Oh, okay. Yeah, we were up there.
I think we had our cabin for like 13 years.
Wow.
Yeah.
You had to have known your family, though, didn't you?
We have a server on there in Chama.
Yeah, I was telling him we've been there
on you a few times.
Where do you stay now when you go?
We haven't really
been back to stay.
We were just up there for a party.
For a realtor party.
A realtor? Yeah, because
the realtor that...
Maybe that's what I thought it was.
Our realtor and his wife
and their son helped my mom
sell the cabin.
But his name is Ernest.
Ernest? Yeah.
So we were up there for... Every year they have a little party
for all their clients.
So we were just up there for that.
Is the realtor enough of a...
I think so, yeah.
They have a house on the... Oh, Ernie!
Ernie. Is it Ernie?
I'm the only Ernest in Chama.
So it's Ernie then.
Yeah.
I know him.
It must have been Ernie.
What lake is their house on?
I forget.
Alvaro?
Is it Alvaro and Aaron? Those are the only two lakes.
Yeah, it must be Alvaro.
I didn't know it was behind the gate. That's actually nice.
I've never been in there.
A lot of miles of road. I think it was like
7 miles just to get to our place.
It was 14 all the way down to the lake.
Yeah, Tony was just up there so it was like...
Were you there this weekend?
No, it was at the end of September.
Oh, the end of September.
Yeah.
I wonder if it was... I was in Dallas, bro.
I wonder if it was cold there.
Because it rained here in Albuquerque all day Saturday.
That's crazy. It's a small world.
Yeah, he was telling me about you up there.
Ernie. Okay, Ernie.
Yeah, that's who it was, Ernie.
Just because that sounds familiar.
He sent it back to trauma now.
Yeah, Tony Ernest is the mayor of trauma and everything.
That's crazy.
Four months.
This is the start of my fifth now.
How long did you live there?
All my life, really? My dad had that business.
I'm sure I'd run into your family then.
Yeah.
Of the 10 kids, I'm still there.
That's crazy.
Yeah, leave.
Too damn cold.
How are you doing, guys?
How are you doing, TJ? Good.
How about you?
I'm just busy, bro.
Busy is a good word.
A lot of people out there, I guess.
Up north and everything.
I bet.
A lot of people.
Is Javed still there?
No.
He's gone now?
He's back here in Albuquerque?
I think he still stays at my mom's house.
Oh, he's in trauma?
Javed is?
Very little.
But doing what?
I don't know.
He's a very strange individual.
I actually
told him
that I could use him.
He doesn't want to work, but I don't know where he gets all his money.
I've seen that a thousand times.
I keep running through
people that
it's like, guys,
and not Javed, but barbers.
God, if you're willing to just put the work in,
you'll end up making
you want to ride my wave and come to the top.
It's like, you've got to put the work in.
I could show you how to get there easily.
I told him the other day
we were there talking
and he was still working for me, and I said,
he said something
about Grandpa, and I was like, Javed, man,
not to be rude or mean, but I'm a
truthful guy. The only grandson
that I've seen with the work ethic
of Grandpa as far as teaching.
I put that on everything, absolutely.
And look, it's because I don't try
to be Grandpa, but dude,
I can't even measure up to Grandpa.
I put that on Jesus Christ, not even
close to measuring up to Grandpa.
But I'm just saying that's because Grandpa was
That's one aspect of Grandpa.
Grandpa worked a business.
He was faithful.
He was a husband.
Grandpa was a hundred thousand things
that I'm not.
That's the big difference.
Grandpa was the overall picture.
But I definitely picked up
him and my father's work ethic.
But mainly Grandpa's.
Grandpa never
worked for anybody.
True.
And look at me, all I
care about is the business, and not because
of financial gain. I love to cut hair.
There you go. I love to cut hair.
I can't wait to get up and wake up and go
cut hair every morning.
Then you're in the
right business. That's the way I
feel. People say, I bet you hate to come
here in the morning already. I'm like, no,
actually, I enjoy it. Love it.
And then a lot of people will think,
oh, Warren, how come you're still
working in the business? It's like, how come you're
still employing someone?
It's like, dude, we choose what we want.
Look, if I didn't want to be here
and I wanted to have two shitty ass barbers here
screwing up my dream and vision,
then I can have that. I don't want to do that.
But I do want
to have another barber come to the top with
me and show a vision of
having someone else here
very soon now at some point.
But like you said,
a lot of people, they don't.
You want the success
but you're not willing to work.
You don't want to show up. You're lazy.
You're gung-ho for two days
and then you've dropped off and you've got
to go back to Albuquerque or do this and that.
Well, about two months ago, I got
a deal where I had to go to
Dallas because I'm a Cooper Tire
salesman and that's where they have their
big, all the
new products coming in, that kind of stuff.
So I made plans to go to Dallas
two months ago.
I knew I had to go. It was bad timing.
Early October, there's a lot of hunting going on.
Probably your friends going out.
Yeah, Mark Smith. Shout out Mark Smith
and everyone else.
Yeah, they got their little license
or whatever it is.
And your hunting license.
Yeah, they bid and they got it.
So basically, I said,
okay, I'm going to go.
I told Javier and
Bobcat, my other worker that's been there for 25 years.
Yeah, I recognize his name.
Okay. Remember you used to have hearing aids?
I don't know if you remember that or not.
Did he have long hair at one point?
Yeah, like little Eddie's long hair.
Yeah, I remember him for sure.
Not through the hearing aids.
But through the hair.
So anyway,
I left Thursday.
I worked all day Thursday.
Well, what happened was,
on Monday before I left,
Bobcat gets COVID, bro.
And I knew it was coming
because his wife had it.
So they had to close City Hall for a few days
because all those girls got it.
And that's where his wife works.
So it was like, bro,
I think you're going to get it, man.
He's like, no, I haven't had it in all these years.
I don't think I'll catch it.
Well, that Monday, he got sicker than a dog.
So me and Javier worked Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday.
Of what week?
Last week.
And then on Thursday, I was going to leave. I didn't.
I worked until 7pm.
Took a shower and flew over here.
And about a month ago,
I told Ernestine,
I got to go to Dallas,
check to see if the Cowboys are playing there.
And if they are,
I'll buy your guys a ticket to go with me to Dallas.
I got to be there for the weekend.
They're playing in the motel and all that anyway.
Yeah, they were playing, bro.
They were playing?
Yeah, so the girls did go with me.
And I'm not that good at flying anyway.
I don't really know airports that well.
No, I'm just like you.
You know what's nice is you can take the girls with you
and they'll take care of everything.
He's just relaxing.
Absolutely.
Look, I get anxiety with that.
I do too, bro.
When I was with Nicole and everything,
it'd be like, hey, she'd have to book everything
because it was like,
I don't like that kind of stuff.
I don't either.
Yesterday we get to gate 821.
We're sitting there and I said, well, I'm going to go to the bathroom.
Came out and Ernestine says,
they moved us to 829.
How would I know that?
Oh yeah, see what I mean?
She's so technologically advanced.
Oh yeah, they moved us to 829.
So we go all down to 829.
And then they said the plane was delayed.
Three hours.
Southwest?
No, America.
So we said,
all right, well, what can we do?
And then they move us from C1
in an electric train
to C4.
I don't know if I'd have known how to get around.
I'm not that advanced.
I don't fly that often.
So anyway, we moved through back.
But anyway, so I left late on Thursday
and
I got so damn pissed
at Javier because Bobcat's out with
COVID. He's the only one there
with Sonia, right?
So she calls him at night and says,
hey, I don't know if Ernest told you, but
he just left, so I'll see you at work
tomorrow morning at 630.
And he says, oh, I'm sorry.
I didn't do anything before 8.
I'm not available
before 8.
Bro, you're not the boss.
You know, this is a whole
different, and I relate this to
this new wave of,
I couldn't imagine if
that was the answer to Grandpa Vigil.
That's where I just say,
that's where I just say,
dude, you're not a man.
It's the work ethic, the possession
that they have. That'll be my next
little speech is
grabbing that work ethic together.
It's like, dude, I don't get anything delayed.
It's like, well, then that doesn't
really work. It's like in the sense of
then this job might not be good
for you because I need someone
in town.
What are you doing before 8?
It's like, bro,
it doesn't matter. If I'm
your new barber and you say, hey, I want to
earn this beer by 8 tomorrow night.
What would you say if I said, well,
I don't do nothing before 9.30?
I would feel disrespected. I would be
like, well, then you don't work here.
I mean, that's just saying you work
in Dallas, bro.
It's like, I can't come back.
Well, then it's almost like,
damn, I would like to hear the response to that.
I would be like, yo, dude, I'm in Dallas,
dude, but I would already be jaded.
It wouldn't work.
She wanted me to enjoy
my trip.
It just so happens that
somebody called me
and
thinking I was still at work
and I was going into my meeting.
One of my customers
calls and says, hey, you guys all right, man?
I was like, yeah, why?
Because your gas station's closed, bro.
I'm trying to put gas.
I was like, it's 8.30. That's weird.
What the hell happened?
Then I called Sonia and she goes, well,
I'm getting there now.
If you refuse to come to work, I'm not going to open for you.
I'm like, you're shitting me.
Then on Saturday,
So then on Saturday,
again,
my ice man calls me
in the morning about 8.
He comes from Pagosa.
He says, hey, Ernest, man, I'm here.
Everything's locked up. I got your new device.
Shit.
So I called Sonia. I said, Sonia, man, it's 8.
It's Saturday. You got to be there.
She said, I'm just driving up.
I told you. I said, he won't work.
He won't open at that time.
But did he make it later?
Yeah, he came in at 8.30.
Both days.
Why won't Disney want to make it at that time?
I don't know.
I haven't talked to him since.
Anyway, as it turned out,
they left the ice. She opened up.
Then this was what
got me to the very end, bro.
It's Saturday night.
I'm out of my meeting.
We're getting ready to
And do you want me to shave your face other than the goatee?
You mean like short?
I can even just take
Or do you want to have a beard?
Because I can either outline a beard
Or I can just real quick knock some of that off
And keep your goatee. If you want to do a beard
I can easily just quickly outline one for you
Where it looks good. Just a goatee.
Okay, so I'll get rid of that. Okay, now tell me what you're saying
Just so I can know what I'm doing.
Okay, so then, Saturday
I'm out of my meetings. I'm done.
While I'm not here. I had one yesterday morning
For not an hour, but
In the hotel, you know what I mean?
So anyway, as it turns out
She's like,
We're just, me and the girls are out
We had gone to eat dinner
We're just sitting in the hotel lobby
Talking, you know.
My phone rings. It's Sonia. Hey, how's it going?
Good. You guys ready for the game and all that?
I was like, yeah. Now is going to be the fun time
For the next 24 hours.
And I don't drink and all that
So it's not like
I'm going to be all hungover. I was having fun.
We're just shooting the bull.
She says, well
Today when we were getting ready
To close, it was a Saturday
Javier told me he can't work Monday
I'm like, wow
What do you mean he can't work Monday?
I'm not going back until Tuesday.
She said, he said he can't
But he has a meeting he couldn't miss.
So what do you want me to do?
Let me call, maybe I'll call one of my
Friends and see if
They can go skate with you.
And then I said, well hold on
Let me call Bobcat.
So then I called Bobcat. I said, bro
When's the last time you tested?
He said, I tested Friday
I was still positive.
So I said, have you tested today, Sunday?
He said, no. I said, why don't you test
About one o'clock
This afternoon
And if you're negative, you're going to go to work tomorrow, right?
Yeah.
Yeah, he called me back. I'm negative, bro.
Okay, good. I'll send you back.
Don't worry, Bobcat will open with you
Saturday or Monday.
He'll be there at 6.30.
She said, go on.
And
I sit in there
We went to the game.
It was an early game.
It started in Dallas at 12, so we were out by like 3.
We went in
We had a light dinner, you know.
Went to the room
And the girls said, they were in a different room
I said, I just want to sit back and chill.
I thought the whole purpose
Of how Ben's going out there
Was to hook you out and everything
At his convenience, though.
Yeah, but
What is happening in trauma, though, that's going on
That you can't be aware of?
I live in a big city, and I make it to work
Every single day, and I get here
I don't open until 9, and I get here at 6.30
In the morning, every single morning
I wake up at 4
And I already start bumping my social media
And getting my YouTube channel going
And you probably get a lot of
Appointments on your phone, huh?
I get all of my appointments on my telephone
So you're more advanced than I am
I can do it
I open at 6.30 because of traffic, right?
But I go to my office
At 5.30
I can accomplish a lot in an hour
Before I open
Like what?
I do a lot of my paperwork
Reports that are due
Village work
So I'm
So when I go at 6.30
I'm in really good shape
But
This has been coming for
Two months, actually
The first time you told me
That I'm working for you
But
You know what, bro? I realized
I'm going back to my old school ways
That I learned from Grandpa
And if that means me and Sonia working by ourselves
So be it
But I'm not going to have an employee dictate to me
What hours are going to work
Sorry, I'm not going to do that
It eventually comes down to where you've got to put your foot down
Family or no family
This is what I expect of you
I don't want a hired family
That right there already sounds like a nightmare
It sounds like a handout
And I'm not saying kiki
I'm just saying
I don't do the family thing
If you want to be an employee and get paid
If you're working commission
That's a little bit of a different
If you want me to pay you, you've got to work
And you can work smart or hard
It's up to you
Oh yeah
I'm lucky I didn't go work for you
Whenever I got out of prison
Just saying because it would have been
God, I would have been a ******* workhorse
That's how I am
That's good
I would be going out and you'd be going in
Absolutely
It's like damn kiki
You almost had a little opportunity to just show the grind
He told me he didn't want to do it
Well then why do you get involved
The only way I'm getting involved
Overall
You can make a lot of money running a gas station
I did the research on it already
There's a lot of purchasing
You're lucky because you have jenny
If you ever wanted to you could make her do
Accounting and everything
Like hey jenny
I need you to come in and get
Get these books together
You know what she does do that for me
I'm going to hire my mom as a bookkeeper
She can do it at the house
She's retired now
And I'm going to open up a little 1821 store
In here for her
That way she can get the proceeds and everything
Turn her into an entrepreneur
Show her that she can make some money
Watch
Show her that she can make some money
Without going to a job
I'm going to show her that she'll make more money
That's another thing I told
Obviously I said
Of all my sisters
I think her and mary were the workhorses
Of the family
My mom and mary
Absolutely
I said
Oh man she worked until she was 70
I'm not sure I can make it until I'm 70
How did you know
I was a workhorse
I saw it from the first day
I came to this barber shop bro
I just saw it by your attitude
I saw the way
It's in your personality
It's in your nature
It's how you move around
I can see bro
You're not slumped
Even before you ran this business
When you were walking around
You could tell by a person's demeanor bro
Right off the pop
I don't know how else to put it to you
Let's get to know the work environment
And I put that in writing
I would say that
For whatever reason
The grandkids
They didn't get grandpa's work ethic
And I wonder why
But I look kinda like grandpa too
So on accident I think
Maybe it is inherited
I don't know
Part of it
I think what it is
I really believe
Like let's say
Whether it was mary
Or even
Linda who had Daniel
Very spoiled
Those kids
Were raised
It was all about play and no work
So how do you become an adult
If you've never really really
Worked and I mean really work
Whereas grandpa
Though he had money
There was too many of us
He didn't give us nothing bro
I bought a motorcycle when I was 12
It was 800 dollars brand new
That's a lot back then though
And he made me pay every single penny
That's like 8,000 now
Just saying it's like
He made me pay every single penny
And I always had a vision
It's like Eddie should have been the station
But you know
Because you were Eddie and everything
You had the name
But he didn't it was you
Look you know what would be a cool little vision
Is down the road
But you know
Now that I have a little bit of
Things going on financially
That would have been sick
If you guys stayed out there
And we conquered trauma
In the sense of Michael
Does all the taxes and everything
He can go out in trauma
And easily do that
I could easily be the barber
I would have trauma blown up
Because I would have everyone
From every surrounding area
That old barber shop that was there
Out aged or whatever it was
I should have went in and bought that
And had a
Nice traditional
Smells like shave cream when you come in
And as hard as I work
And my mom
It's like she's retired now
It's time for her to have fun
I want her to live her life
And she likes trauma dude
Imagine if I was a barber out there
She could live right there
And go back to where she lives
But not a barber
It was an 80 mile jump
That's what I'm saying
I'm pretty cool
And I don't need to make it as much as I do here
I don't care
I love to do it
But you probably would
You'd be busy
So then you're good at what you do
You'd have everybody
Exactly
So watch keep an eye out
Now that you know everything is real
And everything and Michael can
Just keep an eye out
You never know if something pops up over there
I'm not on provision of role anymore
I want to stay out here
It'd be nice to buy a house
I'm qualified to buy a home
It'd be cool to make a change like that
At some point
If your ideology is
You're coming out here eventually
But I'm just saying if you stayed out there
And we got people to go out there
That would be a good thing
Why do you want to retire here?
It's better out there
I don't think I'll come here
Like your grandpa
I don't think you should
In the beginning I was thinking
Why?
You built everything there
We should all come there
We should come to you
And the thing is
We're a light family
Everybody likes her
She's very people friendly
And I would just do what I do here
Work my ass off
And cut hair
And that would be
That's all I like to do
People get it twisted
It's only because I got lucky
I like to do this
I don't like to read books
Sorry to say
But I'm just saying
That would be
You've never experienced this
I'm just going to rip that out
Just so, trust me, Sonia will notice the difference
This movie is for Sonia
Not even for you
But you'll be able to breathe again
This is something that you haven't had done
It's just a nose box
I just scripted in there real quick
Because I didn't want to
It'll be
I like it out there
It's like watch one of these days
I'm going to go take a little trip out there
Just go check it out
Rent a room out there
Go eat or something
Maybe do some fishing
Because my buddies go out there
So they know how to
It's like
They know what's going on
You don't want to just show up there
Without making serious plans
Then I'm just out there
I need to have a place to sit down
And relax
I need to be able to eat
See how that takes that out
I'm watching
Trust me, this won't have to
Happen for a very long time
Trust me, this will be super elite
In the beginning it's weird
I'm kind of like, what the hell is this ----
I just want to get all the blocks
And breathe again
And as you get older, they get worse
Yeah, but as I pop these out
You really will be able to breathe again
Like it's going to give you a good
Look, my mom comes in here and gets in those blocks
Absolutely
She doesn't have much hair
For us, we didn't want that
And that's weird
So now Kiki's not working
And you're still living in the barn
Are you going to find another job out there
It's like you have to
Shit
But it was kind of weird
Michael called me yesterday
He was like, is
August still working for you
I was like, yeah, why
He didn't really say why he asked that question
Yeah
He didn't talk to his parents
I have that feeling
Yeah, but remember
Didn't Jenny work for Michael
Or whatever
This ---- happens
It's no big deal
It's like, whatever
People who couldn't make it here
And I'm still friends with them
It's like, but you couldn't make it
And you'll never work for me, sorry
We're still friends and cool and everything
But at the same time too, dude
If I'm out of town
You need to hold the ******* fort down
Don't do all that ---- to where it's
You know what I mean
It's like, come on
I'm out of town and you're not going to
You should be jumping
You should have said 4 in the morning
I'm already headed to the station
I'm here already
Look, here's my ideology
You say that they open at 8
At the latest, I'm there at 7.30
But I'm saying I'm probably there at 7
Getting ---- situated
At the latest, if I know how to open it within 10 minutes
Then I could probably get there at 7.20
Have it open by 7.30
That way we open at 8 officially
Or whatever, in case someone pops in
I don't want my customers
Beating me to the ******* door
That's the problem
And at some of the barber shops I worked at
This is why I opened my own shop too
I'd be showing up waiting for the goddamn girl to open the shop
And it's like, dude
We have clients sitting out here
------- police officers, everyone
Waiting to get serviced
Dude, you don't let your client beat you to the seat
Not to mention, I have to sanitize my tools and implements
So it's like, dude
That takes 15 minutes off the top
So you open at 9, I expect you to be here
As a barber
No later than 8.45
Like I'm already looking at you horribly if you're here at 8.45
But I'm saying you gotta be here at
You should be here at 8.30
Dude, I would like to see someone with the integrity
Come in at 8.30
Nobody has to be as obsessed as me
But it's like, come in at 8.30 if you're here by 9
Get your ---- set up
It's not rocket science
It's, you want to know how to make $90 an hour?
Show up
It's like, I don't know much
I just remember that when
They don't want to work
It happened twice with me with Grandpa
The very first time he went to
I think Stephen graduated
From either high school
I guess college
He went to San Francisco or wherever
Remember he was at Stanford or whatever?
No
And so they were gone 15 days
It was June
So Grandpa's like
We need you to step it up man
So I did bro, I worked every day
From 6 to 10
For 15 days till he got back
And I think I made an impression on him
That I could actually do it
And then
About two years later
I don't know if you remember this or not
But he got really, really sick
He almost died
He got a bacterial infection
And it actually looked like
He had got a stroke
His face like, you know you like
Collapses
Yeah
And he couldn't work for 6 weeks
Bro, he got sick
Sick, sick, sick
And that was my first time
Stepping up really for a month and a half
Yeah but could you imagine telling Dad
You're all, I don't do anything before
I would, look
If I wanted to phrase it in the nicest way
And try to, I would say
Oh is there any way that I
But I would never have the balls to just straight up say
Oh I don't do things before
It's almost like dude
It's like Jesus Christ
That's almost like you're the boss
I guess you could phrase it something like
If I didn't really want to say like
Is there any way I could open it in
I am working till 10
Yeah exactly
And then he might say
No I need you here at 6.30
And look at that
Nice
Thank you
Beautiful
Yeah bro
And look in the mirror standing up
So you can see it from this perspective
It's not going to work
That's why I decided
