You're here because you need a haircut, right? I get it. The process proves unnecessarily hard. And the anxiety involved in switching styles overwhelms even the coolest cat. Although the core styles haven't changed much since the early 20th century, icons aplenty can shift and reshape the status quo with a simple visit to their high-end salon. They'll leave with a gravity-defying haircut you envy, fetching camera-wielding paparazzi along the way.
And don't get me wrong, the captured celeb looks great. No matter the hairdo, it seems they can do no wrong. Publications suddenly proclaim the current moment the era of the upright bob — that's a fake haircut, but indulge me — and you're left wondering, "Why doesn't my hair look like that?" or "How do I even ask for that?" Stop that. Starting points abound and can act as a way forward toward your desired haircut. Using a classic style like a crew cut as the foundation, for example, one can tweak it a little to add edge or skew conservative.
Unless you're forced to abide by rigid grooming regulations – a la the military, although they've since adapted their code to include ponytails, buzzcuts and dreadlocks — there's no sense in limiting what your hair can look like. Minimal research — aka a quick Google search — reveals millions of ways to wear your hair. But look around, men's haircuts aren't that different from person to person, and switching styles isn't rocket science. The good ones stick around and the bad ones are blips.
It's also important to consider length. Some styles take months — if not years, depending on how fast your hair grows — to achieve. Others are quick yet irreversible decisions. Before you go bald or commit to billowing layers, think about it a little more simply. Look at yourself in the mirror; then at your photo reference; yourself in the mirror again; the haircut once more; envision it all over again. Bring the photo with you but be ready to make adjustments, albeit minor.
"A photo reference, whether it be some cuts you've seen (from a celebrity standpoint) or just looks you've seen on social media, can be a really great jumping-off point. At that point, you're not necessarily discussing very strict terms in regards to texture, length or whatever it may be, but it's more so trying to look at that photo, see if it works with that person's personal style and then tailoring something to them that's going to be close. There's no such thing as one-size-fits-all for this," Rob McMillen, co-founder of NYC barbershop Mildred, tells us. He also offers his opinions on how long you should wait between appointments. "If you keep it really short, [you should go] two to three weeks; if you keep something medium length, three to five; and if you have a longer look, maybe it's five to seven or even longer."
That means the haircut your favorite athlete wore last week won't look identical on you — or your friend or your father — and especially so a week or two after it's cut. Tailoring a style to your face shape, aesthetic, activities and schedule requires assistance from a trained barber. First, figure out your face shape. Then, seek out a style you're interested in, find a local barber, book an appointment and get the look you've been yearning for — or something close to it. And bring whichever photo you need.

Hey guys, I just wanted to kick out a quick shear video, letting you guys know which shears I use
and why, and let's get into it. This is the brand of shears that I use. They're called Mizutani,
you know, and 1921 is when they developed their company, started making shears.
They are the best of the best. This is their contact information here.
Yeah, so let's see. This is a case that the shears came in.
Mizutani was nice enough to give this to me. Shout out, thank you guys. Oh yeah, let's see.
First and foremost, I'll get into these shears here. These were once silver
and these were sprayed gold. These are their sword shears and man, these are absolutely amazing.
I think these ran $800 to maybe a thousand dollars. I think they're about 900 bucks
and I forget what it cost to spray them. It was a few hundred or whatever,
but they have a big waiting list as well. Well worth it. These right here, these do everything.
If you're looking to just get one pair of shears, not a pair of thinning shears,
but if you're just looking to get one pair of shears, these will do absolutely everything for
you. And so I wanted to introduce those first. I really believe for just starting off with the
brand, these are the best. And let's see, let's get into another pair of shears that I have.
Let's see. Let's get into these. So these here, the gold ones that I have,
they have a classic screw ball bearing, just a little bit different. These ones have a built-in
carbon fiber resin bearing. The ergonomics behind these are unreal.
I would say that once you get to know these really well and you get super good with these
and your shear works, you know, you're able to flip the shears around, you're able to do whatever
you want to do, then you can go into a pair of these. And these are, I would say, you know,
somewhat expert level. You can start off with these. There's no wrong answer with these.
These are the Acros. These have, these have a, what happened is here with the blade,
you can see the difference of these two blades. This blade is straight. This blade is curved.
So it has a curved blade on it. You wonder why it's curved. It's curved to add power.
So when you're cutting power, I find that these are really good for men's hair.
I want to tell you something else too. These are the first and only pair of,
you can read that. Let's see. That right there says nano-powdered steel.
So these are nano-powdered steel. What I really like about these and what I use these for
is reverse point cutting. Whenever I want to add heavy texture. So these shears really, really,
really, really grip the hair. Like they're super easy. And now that I find that they're
good for all around, as far as the detail going around the ear, they're great doing everything.
They're just, they're very, very, very good. But I would say for detail, detail, detail,
you know, the straight ones are going to get that very, very fine detail. These are good
for point cutting. These are good for all around taking, you know, levels off the hair.
Let's get into a special pair of shears. Let me just take a drink of this first.
A hook red bullet for free. Oh yeah. All right. Let's see. These,
these are the same as the gold ones, except for these are made of a steel called Damascus.
These are the Dama swords. So another pair of sword shears. The material that they're made of
adds for a very special cut. It's a very special sound. It's God, how would I almost say,
you almost can't get it wrong with a pair of these. If you were to start off with these,
that wouldn't be wrong. These are $1,500, but these are the, you know, I like using all three
of them. I really like using these Damascus ones. I like using them for either a woman's
cut or superior detail. I don't do women's hair, so I use them for superior detail.
I find myself almost using these for just about everything. I, man, I even, I even like them on
the beard trim just because of the way they grip the hair. So if you just lightly trim,
it comes out really good. Let me tell you guys this, getting away from these for a second,
using the proper material is monumental. And especially for a barber to use the proper
stuff, it's like you might expect a stylist to have Mizutani. If she doesn't, she made a
grave mistake. But for a barber to use it, I think that's going to be the next step is
all barbers should have these shears. I mean, it's these right here, not to mention the
agronomics of just carpal tunnel in the, in the, in this area here, you know, having,
working a pair of shitty shears that are, you know, a hundred bucks, 200 bucks,
those are shitty shears guys. $30 shears aren't even on the map, but you know, it's,
it's just good to have a good pair of shears. You guys wonder why my haircuts come out so good.
It's because of the shears I use. I'll get into the clippers that I use and I'll eventually make
a video on all of the ---- that I use. That way you can copy exactly what I use.
I'll get into zero gapping them and, and doing, you know, all kinds of cool stuff.
I'm just trying to think it comes with some sick oil. They have like a little oiling thing that
looks like a damn syringe and a little bit of oil goes in this hole. Let's see if you can see it
right there. That little crevice, you know, it has a syringe of oil, but it goes in
that you'll stick right in here. I didn't bring it and it goes in there. And then you'll oil the,
the spot here of your shears. And then on the reverse, you can oil this. And why do you oil
those spots? Because that's where the movement's happening. So you want to oil right there.
You can drop some oil in your ball bearing here to, in your, you know, to change the weight of
the shears. Your shears, when you open them up and they drop, they should stop right there.
They should stop right there. That's how you know they're perfect.
And then just quick little thing with the shears, like here, here's some cool ---- you can do.
This is, you know, when you're cutting hair, pocket your shears, get the comb, lift it up, come back,
you know, all of that. I've been flipping my shears since the day I was into this industry
and game. And I never used anything else other than Mizutani. I only believe in the best of the
best. And, uh, Hey guys, I'm not getting paid for the video, nothing, but I will say, uh,
go to Mizutani.com and definitely check their website out. If you have any questions, hit me
up, dude. Uh, I live in the Albuquerque area. I hope to be soon carrying a bunch of their shears.
And, uh, if you guys ever want to come to the shop and check them out, look at them and everything
and boom, uh, the best thing to do, those go onto their website, Mizutani.com and, uh, and,
and order a pair, order a few pairs. You know what I mean? You can't go wrong.
If you look at the ones I have in your barber, those are the right ones to get.
And, uh, that's about all I could think of for now. I hope I didn't miss anything. And, uh,
like I said, these are the Damascus shears, beautiful sword. These are the Acros,
you know, curved blade, nano powdered metal. They grip the hair phenomenally. There's no
shear in the world, better tag texture than these. Uh, what a beautiful, uh, thing that they did for
me. They customize a pair of gold pair. Uh, you know, they've been busy over book. They still got
me in. Shout out Mizutani. Thank you guys. I appreciate it. I appreciate everything you do
for me. Uh, and, uh, Hey guys, I guess I can end this video. Um, if you liked the video comment,
definitely leave a comment about the shears, uh, like, and subscribe. Anything will help. And,
uh, we appreciate it. Awesome. Have a good day.
