A trip to visit Googie and Pops in sunny spring Cumbria - Pops feeling much brighter so Googie and I take a spin around her amazing three quarter acre garden which she has created herself from an empty field over thirty years. She works in her garden every single day with help from her friend Carol on Mondays. And this is what she's created.
With room always for the hedgehogs, wildflowers, orchids and more, she's a ruthless pruner as you'll see, especially with trees taller than they should have been in her lifetime (she says!). There's a vegetable garden, there are glorious flowering rhododendrons, hellebores, masses of spring blossom. I think the pink acer is the variety Brilliantissimum and the pink leafed shrub towards the end is a pieris, of course. Mum and I both have lots of holes in our heads in this clip so if you can help us with any of the plants we can't remember the names of we'd be grateful x

Thank you very very much to the kind lady in Canada who sent me the most wonderful fabric.
This is the first one I've made with the butterflies on it and then I made two with
the hummingbirds and one with the parrots. So we've made four quilts out of three pieces of
material and they're all fantastic and I've now just finished the twelfth one with the parrots
and the toucan and they're just going to be collected on Tuesday. They will be given to
the children immediately. Thank you. It's the Linus project isn't it mum? It is the Linus project
as ever. That's fantastic thank you very much. Kind lady from Canada you didn't in your package
to us with the fabric you didn't include your name or your address so we couldn't thank you
but or we couldn't find it if you did but what an amazing amazing thing to send so thank you very
much. Well I'm back up at mum and dad's I haven't been for a while. I'm here for a few days and
then I'll be back south for my first career change flower farming workshop at the farm next week
but mum and I thought we'd go for a little wander around the garden having shown you the quilt
so you're very welcome and I hope you enjoy the tour. Mum's garden is the place where you find
all the treasures little single treasures in the cracks. There's a little blue treasure
Oh hello Purdy. Look wherever you go I think are you a month ahead?
No you're a month ahead of me. No but do you say for normally for for April? We are exactly on time.
Oh are you? Yes. We're way ahead. But our blossom trees are all finished. Which for mid what are we
But these anemones have been fantastic and these are going to have the huge huge
leaves above here which children pick and pretend it's an umbrella. Are these a saxifrage? Yes.
Look at the bees or is that a it's a honeybee having a rave up. Look at your wind flowers
Those are the anemones. I love them love them. Oh right what else have we got to look at and if

i answer all the questions and comments here on youtube thanks very much come along let's go
so through the archway this is copper beach we have the vegetable garden what have we got in
the vegetable garden googie absolutely nothing but but onion plants when i ordered sets they
sent plants and i didn't unpack them for four days because i thought they were sets
so they're suffering i'll show you them in embarrassment but here i dug this glorious
and the day after we had a rabbit hole oh no so we now have a second lot of
oh protection protection against the rabbits no more rabbit holes but this year i can
eat my rhubarb which i wasn't allowed to next year last year how many years do you have to
eat it it looks very well yes it's extremely well that is look at that and you've mulched
it with your compost yes so the onions are in here where you can see the little stripes
but no no sign of them no but the roots are in and that's the important bit that is the important
so we're just praying for warm sunshine and no rain for at least a week and the chives are about
over there very exciting the herbs are all well the perbs look great and my next weekend i will
plant out my sweet peas which will go along there and it's the ninth year so they can only have one
more year there and then i'll have to swap and put them where the beans normally go do you put
your sweet peas in do you put your sweet peas in the same place for 10 years in a row yes and then
not again okay all right i've done mine for five years so i've got five years to go you're okay
then look at your lovely clematis is about to isn't that yes it's bursting here it comes any
minute white is this montana yes it's a good old favorite isn't it it's called vigorous in the in
the catalog it's called vigorous and look at your green roof oh mom it's in flower look but it's
it's full of bees and i was so stung last year when i was cutting when i was cutting things
back and somebody rescued me from up the ladder and carried me away from the sting
and i wrapped a tea towel around my neck and poured a bottle of brown vinegar on it and the hurt
went immediately that's amazing and you have they're not showing it but you have quite a lot
of orchids yes up here they should be showing quite soon and who's this little pink person
it's a little tiny pea little pea you can see it's a pea yes and it spreads and spreads and
spreads so soon it's going up and soon it'll get to the end it's amazing look this roof this is a
green roof on top of a shed and there's an old fork keeping the shed door shut and
if you look at it it is rammed with look sphagnum moss and this little pea
and it is full of and strawberries look strawberries that is amazing and i think
mum's opened the door to show us something oh tidy very tidy four days four days worth of tidy
very very tidy the other day it was raining yet again so super tidy put my hat on and went for
super tidy and it's loving it here so this this is a little clematis and i think i'm going to
look up the name and get it right in the notes but i think it's something akiba or keep akibia
akibia and it smells of chocolate and it is extremely of beauty beyond compare it's the one
that erin of floret has this one and a white version of it climbing all over her pergolas
all around her flower farm oh yes i'm sure she probably got the idea from you you need to give
it rum it's it's quite greedy for rum and it loves a little top dress oh does it yes always
give it a bit of lunch yes in the winter absolutely look at the hellebores look at the seed heads
mum do you do anything with the seeds do you let them seed themselves around i let them and then
if i'm feeling very vigorous i dig them up and pop them up and give them away that'd be good
for a plant sale wouldn't it very good for a plant sale they're very very popular but i don't want
any more of the same sort look at and those what you have to do with hellebores if you want more
is this is the time to harvest the seeds isn't it yes not quite they're still green they get
fatter and then you want to sow them fresh i think well i i just dig up the seedlings yes i don't
ever harvest the seed because i haven't got time but the seedlings just seed themselves everywhere
look i can see them are coming through they're about two foot high oh and they are fantastic
they are very good tall lilies there i have to hold my hand so i can point there are the lilies
but then down here you can see there are hellebore seedlings there's one there's one
there's one very happy they would dig up very nicely yes you could pop them up beautifully
box bushes balls which i took from cuttings of the yellow ones right up there again to get
this big oh yes because you don't get the terrible the blight you don't get box blight no because
you're colder not yet not yet somebody up the road has oh no yes never mind and here is you
i've told you this every year this was the only plant when i lived in london in a half barrel
and it followed me here and it's doing terribly well it's really happy it's happier than it ever
was in a half barrel yes look at that that is one happy no it's not a hydrangea i call it french
girl snickers french girl snickers very good is this a copper cob nut yes but it's never had nuts
in its life you obviously can't be copper and nut i know i get that i think there's quite enough
work to be copper but it is really very beautiful look at that color that is just this is a dark
magenta you can see the purple coming tree peony and it has a little a little gate propping it up
yes you don't want to let it fall over no it's very badly pruned by myself looks good to me
look at the color of your maple that's a very good yellow with pink we pray for no more frost
because it is frost damaged every year yes so we will have one more hard one and it'll go
hang on oh yes john downey and you planted that for the queen's yes she said go plant a tree
we planted this well you're nothing if not obedient well and who is this person look at
this blossom this is my white friend isn't it heavenly and it does its own thing and it
grows into the gate and around the gate oh you can't shut the gate because it's in it
do you know what it is no i haven't a clue nor by never mind but look you too like katie
you have bayou blue gates and i think this is just coming look this is my favorite tree
just coming look at it look at that color oh mom it's lobster it is lobster what kind of tree is
this it's maple oh look and look at that color yes isn't it will it get eaten by the frost if
we get one no it's hardy as anything is it yes one wouldn't have thought it and it's sort of
balloon shaped it's lovely i don't touch it we've got two of them there's a pair of it down there
it's just gorgeous color look at that pink against the dark red of the crab apple it's
very good pink i might have to look up what it is and then we can put it put the name add it in
in the blurb right before you go yes can you tell me what this is because i simply can't
remember every year it's a trillium no the yellow one yes it's a trillion no it isn't
all right then i don't know okay anybody know what that is can you put it in the blurb
in the in the comments please mom we can't hear you because you're walking away from us
oh they just they've just all gone over it's spread this is the mother plant
and it all spreads into 50 others oh look there's a pink one over there
can you see it yes i can't go very close i don't want to tread on anything you're okay
dangerous okay if anybody please watching can identify oh it's a kind of fritillaria mom
no it's not no okay anybody can anybody identify this is the flower
and it's the same as those yellow ones we just saw and the leaf is just over it's a lilyish leaf
and these are all them the flat the fat flat leaves are all them so it's had 50 babies
i wonder what it is there's another one there is it but i can't see no right let's walk down
and see the amelanchia lamarckii i've probably said that wrong too i've my brain is full
googie's off to fetch her new favorite tool and we can admire the amelanchia now look at this good
thing about an amelanchia it doesn't mind a bit of a hack back one of the reasons it's very happy
to be a small tree in a town garden and what a very very beautiful blossom in the spring
with this lovely rusty foliage and in the autumn it gives you more great lovely foliage and
i've planted at last i've planted i think i've planted 10 this winter no i must have planted
five um and it's taken me 20 years at common farm before i planted them but they're really
fantastic and they cut there's quite a good cutting material if you want to make cut flowers
with them right here comes googie with her new amelanchia canadensis it depends i think there
are various there's a posher one okay show us this right ladies and gentlemen this will cost
and it's for stripping paint and i'll show you what it does are you ready yes follow me following
you oh look how to get the moss off your slippery stones use a paint stripper genius
especially as it only cost 75p i'm sorry as usual i forgot the microphones so
i hope you can hear what mum's saying yeah all gone very clever there you are that's how you
keep fit when you're 84 years old i have a question for the readers just behind me
is a fir tree and it's dying at the tips i want to know why please it's a larch or a fir no it's a
and it was planted oh 20 years ago and it's got 20 years growth and it just doesn't like
the ends of its branches is it too wet i think it probably is the wet because we always have
wet problems but i'd be happy if it wasn't because the wet problems are not going to go away let's
go look up close and personal look you can see where carol mum's gardening friend has
taken little bits off that weren't looking great
and there are little bits of there yes you can see a little bit of dead at the end there
anybody got any good ideas about what's wrong with this yes dying off at the end very odd
i wonder if it's the wet but don't panic because in the grass you have a whole patch
of speed well i know isn't it isn't it lovely and it's he he mows higher than that i mean the
thing is you don't need much of a garden you could have two foot by two foot and that is moss and
speed well and that's a whole world of gardening isn't it very beautiful you also have a whole
this is why it's worth having really nice edging to your beds because then
when the beds are not full in full flower you've got something structural and attractive
i have little bits of this kind of ground color in pink white and blue because if a bumblebee
wakes up from winter and doesn't find pollen in about 100 yards it's a dead bumblebee
and so we have pollen everywhere all over the garden it's not very attractive but it's essential
i completely agree so we're gonna have to take the tops off these trees because they're going
to hit the electricity line but what did the man tell you when you bought them from him mum
well when i said how tall will it get he said madam won't have the benefit he said
this is very worse and i put him down as rather rude because here we are 20 years 20 years and
it's twice the size i thought so you thought it was somebody else's job to take the tops out but
it's going to be yours and this cherry wasn't feeling very well so you just chopped the top
off ruthlessly because it was already look next year growth it's going to be a low a low double
pink oh very good well what more could you want oh so it is look it's a species tulip my favorite
one it's pink and white oh my friend polly nicholson has just written an amazing book
about tulips mind you i did plant well well but one is better than nothing yes we have to be very
careful where we walk here because like that common farm there are orchids pinging up all
over the place all the spotted leaves are orchids but this is also an orchid you just have to watch
out that you're not treading on them i love this so this one is in the way of the mower
so it's been protected with orange tree on the corners so you can't miss it and if anyone has
ever looked at googie's clip about her potting shed she'll know that there is the national
collection of strings there's always string for such a project so we're just going to visit the
hedgehog house anyone watched this before will know googie is very keen on her hedgehogs this is
where the hedgehogs live look they bring out the old bedding and dump it which is wool carpet
and then they dig themselves a new oh look they've dug themselves a new front door as well
there they go they they have a little their little way in and there is their the way to their home
it's amazing we better we better not stay too long we don't want to disturb them
mum's laughing look at that beautifully laid hedge and the cow slips cow slips in the wild
and later on this is all hard heads napweed but for now it's cow slips
quite squelchy underfoot mum it's been very wet more of these beautiful beds five of these in the
yeah but they're good aren't they and also these ones i like these they've got a better leaf
haven't they much better they're the muscari latifolium i happen to know i have learned
what are they going to be old woman's chin like an old woman's chin mum said
they are huge huge blue heavenly heavenly things once once more nameless once more nameless and
look down the down the valley there are the howgills in the distance i always think they
look like a big heap of unmade bed elephant's bottoms oh okay well we'll have to agree to
disagree just three tulips you don't need many scented and here is the same pea
that is on the roof of the of what we call the pot shed but a different different sort
but same family it's bigger because it's got more roof more root space well i expect so
and that's very good pink even wetter and in the middle there is an enormous rabbit hole
which has meant that the end of the fence has fallen over it's waiting for mike to come and
good friday no i didn't i can't because good friday was really too early and tomorrow i'm
going to get another bucket or two of um chicken poo somebody offered me some but
i thought it would be too fresh and still hot yes and the last three three lines are
pink fur apple oh yum delicious tastiest um but they need another bucket full this is a
thing i really love in your garden is well no let's go past the pond try not to fall over
that's always a problem um mike is digging up so he's putting on his waders and digging up those
they're becoming yes a pest yes yes and then those have been too heavenly for us and there's
and then down here this is look everybody i love this at this time of year you see this
here is the amazing euphorbia the red euphorbia mum found it quite annoying and invasive in a bed
so dug it out and tucked it in the long grass yes where it's very happy with and the white
which is a personal favorite it could be talia who knows whoever neither us
it's a beautiful beautiful it is really on either side much but it's obviously happier in shade
yes it is it is it's a lovely garden look if you haven't been here before there's a patchwork hedge
and a potting shed look your camassias coming out mum here they come gorgeous
oh well thank you very much for showing us around i really enjoyed it people haven't been out for a
couple of days so i see new things well people have been asking after you so i'm glad we had
time to have a little walk around the garden and i wouldn't have missed showing mrs kind
oh yes exactly right thank you very much bye-bye before we go i'm just going to show you this
lovely pink look at that which i think only works on acid soil but you reckon you haven't got acid
soil mum no we have neutral so that's astonishing i might plant one i don't think i'd like it a
common farm it's too clay certainly wouldn't but what a color that's and it cuts beautifully
makes great cut flowers and look at the new sprites coming on the stem yes wow heaven gorgeous
pink look you've got this lovely yellow bugle yes i took up a lot of moss along the top there
yesterday with just such a thing and that's the other the new hedgehog house did anybody moved in
no but i only worked for um great great fun oh mike cut down some branches from here and
oh great that could but somebody might come at any time to come and live in there well when
they've had babies they might creep off from under the under the barrow and want to be alone
they might need an extension yes look at the bee can you hear the bees on the willow i try and
it's really hard filming bees there's one because they move ever so quickly but if you can get them
then you'll see that their honeysacks are full of yellow pollen oh i can't i never find them
it's really hard to see them through the filming you can see them through the eyes but you can't
see them through the filming anyway this willow is humming with honeybees you might just have
to believe me
