What's up everyone and welcome to the club. Today we're creating a sketch illustration of a lily.
Welcome everyone and thanks for joining me today. For this lesson we'll need our sketch pad and a
pencil. I'm going to be sketching with this 2B Stadler pencil but you're welcome to use whatever
you like. Now the first thing we want to do is block out the basic shape and composition before
we get into the details. So let's start in the center page. I'm going to start with a small
little circle and I want to add six petals going out from that circle. So let's start with a tall
draw a straight line going up. Let's add two going out towards the side. So just
define the angles of each of these petals. Let's add two coming down and out
and then the bottom one I'm going to get a slight angle coming down towards the left.
Now each of these six petals will originate from that center point. We're going to give
it a curve along the outside. So let's start with that center one. I'm going to add the
rough shape going around and then back in. The same thing with the right side.
I'm going to go around each of these petals adding that curve.
You want to overlap these along the center.
So
now once we define our composition you want to go in and start adding some details. Let's start
with this one along the bottom. So this petal will sit on top of the ones along the side.
So I'm going to give the center a little bit of a bend going up and then out
just defining the edges going around adding a little bit more shape so it looks a little
bit more natural. I'm going to add a fold in the center and layer the outside.
Fold this down towards the middle. Now I can go back and just erase that sketch
along the inside just to clean this up so it's a little bit easier to see our drawing.
Now let's layer these two on top as well. So we start with the left starting from the center
and add a curve to that center seam going out. I'm just going to fold this down on the end
and pull that back up. This is on the inside edge
down toward the middle. Now the back side is going to be tucked in
and behind. So we're going to step back up on the back side and then down.
And we do the same thing just cleaning up the inside
and we'll do the same thing on the right.
And right here this is going to fold back so we're just going to flatten off the end
pull this in underneath.
Now that we established the three overlapping petals let's add some details to the ones in
the back. So let's start with the one on the bottom left and pull this around
then the tip going back in. From the end we'll draw the center seam coming in toward the middle
and just adding some shape to the back side.
Let's go up toward the top going around the side
and I'm just going to dip the center in and back around.
Let's get that center seam a slight bend toward the left.
I'm just going to do one final cleanup before getting to the details and shape.
Now we're going to add those stems in the center. Let's start right in the middle with the main one
coming up toward the center and then up here I'm going to draw an oval. Trace this back along the
right side. I'm going to add those smaller stems along the outside just going around and then on
the ends I'm just going to add that oval detail.
Now let's go and start adding some more detail starting with the middle
and let me shade the outside and just carefully work our way around the bottom.
Let's add some more contrast and a bit more shade. So I'll darken up the top of the stem
a bit like that.
I'm just going to use a side edge of my pencil to add a little bit of shadow
in the center just going out in the middle towards each of the petals.
Now I'm going to add some more detail to each of the petals starting back in the same order
so
I'm going to add a darker tone to the tip of each petal and just fade that in.
I'm going to do the same thing for the center and work my way out.
And these petals on top will cast a little bit of shadow to the petals along the bottom.
I'm just adding a little bit of texture inside.
So
I'm just going to have those little spots inside the petals.
I'm just placing these towards the inside edge and just fading them out.
So
I'm just going to add a stem coming down on the right side.
Now let's finish off by shading in that stem and starting our artwork and that's pretty much it.
There's a sketch illustration of a lily. I hope you enjoyed today's lesson. If you do,

simple things just like this. I want to thank you for watching and I'll see you again soon.
