Today we are going to follow one very special seed.
All the way from a sleepy seed to a tall plant.
Let's visit a quiet sunny garden. The sleepy seed. Our story starts under
the ground in the dark cool soil. A tiny seed is
resting. Inside this seed is a secret. A tiny
It is protected by an outside layer called a seed coat.
It keeps the seed safe like a little house.
But the seed cannot rest forever. To wake up
it needs a few important things. It needs water to drink,
warmth from the soil, and even air to breathe.
When it rains the water soaks into the ground.
The seed's long nap is almost over. It starts to soak up all that water.
It swells up bigger and bigger. This makes its protective coat get softer.
It's like an alarm clock telling the seed it's time to wake up and grow.
Waking up. This special time is called germination.
That's a big word but it just means the seed is starting to sprout.
After drinking lots of water the seed has so much energy
that its coat begins to split open. Pop! The very first part to grow is a tiny
root. It stretches down, down, down into the
soil. This little root is so important. It will
hold the new plant tight in the ground and start drinking
Reaching for the light. After the root pushes down
another part called the shoot starts to push
up, up, up. It's reaching for the warm light.
It is hard work pushing through all of the soil
but it keeps going. Finally a little green shoot pokes out of
the ground. Hello world! Right now it is just a
small baby plant called a seedling. It has a few special leaves that came
from inside the seed. These seed leaves are like a packed lunch.
They give the seedling the food it needs to grow
before it can make its own. Growing big and green. Now that the
seedling is in the sunshine and fresh air
its real work begins. It starts to grow its true leaves.
These new leaves are amazing. They are like a tiny kitchen.
Here the plant does something wonderful called photosynthesis.
It sounds like a big word but it's quite simple.
The leaves use energy from the sunlight, water the roots drink from the soil,
and a gas in the air to make their own sugary food.
This food gives the plant energy to grow taller and stronger
every single day. The stem gets thicker, the roots spread wider under the ground,
and more and more green leaves grow to catch the sunlight.
A grown-up plant. As the plant keeps making its own food and growing bigger
it isn't a seedling anymore. It becomes a mature
grown-up plant. And do you know what can happen next?
It begins to grow flowers. These flowers are not just for looking pretty.
They have a very important job. They help the plant make new seeds.
Busy bees and butterflies often visit the flowers.
After their visit the flower slowly changes into a fruit or a pod
and inside brand new seeds are growing. And so the story happens again.
The plant started as a tiny sleepy seed and grew into a big strong plant that
made new seeds of its own. Those new seeds can fall to the ground,
wait in the soil for water and warmth, and start the whole journey all over
again. From a tiny seed to a big plant and back
to a seed. What an amazing journey. So the next time
you see a seed you can remember this secret story that
might be inside. A tiny plant growing and getting ready to
push through the soil and say hello world. Thanks for watching with us
