Now to the White House where Alex Hogan is reporting live for us. Hi Alex.
Hi Rich. So the president telling Iran the clock is ticking and that new truth social that you
mentioned earlier indicating that hostilities could resume if there is no deal between the U.S.
and Iran. This also comes as other countries are reacting and responding to the president's
historic meeting with China that he returned from earlier this weekend with today the president
holding a phone call with the South Korean president to discuss some of the ins and outs
of that meeting. And in Beijing President Trump says that he and Chinese President Xi Jinping
discussed Taiwan that was a large focus and that pending 14 billion dollar arms sale to Taiwan in
great detail. Those words sparking speculation. Today Taiwanese President Lai Ching-teh says that
everyone there is concerned about the issue. Lai Ching-teh said that while Taiwan will not
provoke China or escalate the conflict it will not not give up its sovereignty or free will
and free way of life nor will it be sacrificed. White House officials today are also reacting
to that trying to reassure some of the concerns and fears saying that the status quo has not
changed. The president was really clear about this. There's no change in American policy on Taiwan.
The visit of course focused heavily on trade between the two countries. It also addressed
the war in Iran and efforts to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. China is the largest buyer of Iranian
oil and while President Trump says he did not ask President Xi to pressure Iran there is new
fallout today as Democrats call on the administration to end the war. I don't think we need China's
support. I think the fastest way to end the war in Iran is just to stop digging a hole even deeper
and that's what we should do right now. He's gotten into this in this war that's making us
less safe so no we don't need China to get us out we just need to end it. We have not seen the
president publicly here today. He is currently at his golf course in Virginia although we do know
that the president also spoke with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu with that call lasting
about 30 minutes. Rich. All right Alex Hogan live for us at the White House today. Alex thank you.
For more let's bring in Victoria Coates the former deputy national security advisor during
President Trump's first term. She's also president of national security at the Heritage Foundation.
Victoria thank you so much for joining us this afternoon and I want to start with what Ashley
Webster was reporting is that we've heard a lot of this language before the U.S. and Iran
pretty much every time the U.S. and Iran get into a negotiation it seems to be this endless cycle
but here we are where there are threats there's an uneasy ceasefire ongoing in the strait yet it's
not opening yet. How does the U.S. get out of this cycle? Rich good to be with you. I think we're going
to have some some really interesting days coming up here this week because Iran is getting into a
worse and a worse situation vis-a-vis their oil exports. So they haven't been able to get oil
out for a month. They're filling up their their storage that's maybe already entirely full. The
treasury secretary was talking about that over the weekend. And then they also have this issue where
their their electric grid is failing. The lights are going out. Their their rationing of fuel. So
they are facing an increasingly strong kind of pressure cooker if you will domestically that's
going to force them into some sort of a decision. And I know there's obviously pressure on the White
House as well in the form of elevated gas prices and elevated food prices. But it's nothing compared
to what Iran is facing. And we need to let that pressure build get the good deal the president
wants and resolve this thing once and for all. Do you think some of the earlier goals and objectives
like completely ridding Iran of IRGC leadership or seem to be unattainable at this point? Or
what are the best case scenarios that can happen? It seems like right now the U.S. just
would like to get the strait closed and contain as much of Iran as aggression as it can.
Well I don't know that the eradication of IRGC leadership is actually was ever a goal of this
operation. I think you know I have no fondness for the IRGC. They've had a hit out on me for
years. So I wouldn't mind if they went away. That's that's not a bad thing. But that was never
the president's goal. The president's errand was to rid the American people of the threat of a
nuclear armed Iran and the way they've behaved for the last three months tells us what most of us
already knew which is they would be too likely to use it. They're using all sorts of things
that are not rational. You know shelling their neighbors even neighbors that have been historically
more sympathetic to them like Qatar are now unified against them. So they don't make rational
decisions. Ending the nuclear threat was always the president's bottom line. That's what needs
to be achieved. Then you know of course we all went the straight open and all of those molecules
back on the market. The president just returned from a trip to China. Do you think that that there
was much accomplished on these. And in years past has the U.S. really accomplished much in these
massive summits. It seems like we're continually talking about the same issues with China also.
Well we are. But I mean we also had that in the 70s and 80s when we were dealing with the Soviets
and you know Ronald Reagan was was perfectly willing to go to Russia and other places to meet
with Chairman Gorbachev. And that kept us from getting into a conflict. And we had a big report
come out from Heritage This Year Rich called Tidal Wave. And it's our first AI based report.
Really fun. Anyone who wants to geek out it's on heritage.org. But the key finding that was
consistent across all the AI platforms was a war between the United States and China is a 10 percent
blow to the global GDP. That's a global recession if not depression. We want to avoid that if we
you know if we can by reasonable means without appeasing China. That's why these summits are
important. And we can hopefully get to a resolution of China similar to what happened with
the Soviet Union. We hear so much speculation as to when or if China will move on Taiwan.
What do you think about that and what do you think would make China less likely to move on Taiwan.
I think that we have we have to say when because and because it is it is probably
self-delusional to say if. And that's another part of this this tidal wave. And the way you do it is
you deter China. You make sure the United States is as strong as it can be. That's why the president's
1.5 trillion defense or rather war budget that he submitted is so very important. This is a historic
commitment to the United States military. And bear in mind that's what President Reagan did too. He
built up so quickly you know with SDI missile defense that the Soviets couldn't match it and
they wound up destroying their own economy. And so I think that's the kind of much more peaceful
route peace through strength that the president wants to pursue. And you deter China. You make
Taiwan just not something desirable not something you know that they want to get involved in.
And so that that's what I would very strongly recommend. And bringing things now closer back
here to the United States or off the coast of the United States 90 miles at least in Cuba.
The U.S. is reportedly planning on indicting Raul Castro the former president the brother of Fidel
Castro. Is the U.S. do you think preparing for the type of operation that we saw in Venezuela or is
this just another signal to Cuba that they need to acquiesce to our demands. Well it's certainly
a signal. And bear in mind this is what we did with Nicolas Maduro. Then Secretary Attorney
General Barr prepared those indictments against Maduro in 2020. And of course President Biden
chose not to act on them. President Trump chose to pursue them. And we now have a much more hopeful
path for Venezuela. And as you said Cuba is 90 miles off our shore. We have a vibrant Cuban
American community here in the United States. Cuba should be an asset to the United States not
one of our more dire security risks. So that message is being sent to Raul Castro who remains
the decision maker on the island. If you don't acquiesce to the very clear demands of CIA Director
Ratcliffe Secretary Rubio and the president then you can face the same fate as Nicolas Maduro.
All right around the world in five minutes. Victoria Coates thanks so much for joining us.
Thank you Rich.
