Woman recounts moment neighbor rushes to rescue after intruder breaks into home

He was shot and killed in Philadelphia's Ronhurst neighborhood after police say he forced his way inside of a home. Investigators say the suspect broke into a family's house on the 1600 block of Griffith Street just after 1 this morning. Police say the intruder went into the daughter's room and was shot during a struggle. Action News reporter Elizabeth Worthington is live at the scene with details on how police say this all unfolded. Elizabeth. Yeah, well, Sarah, we didn't have very many details up until about maybe three minutes ago. We actually just spoke to the homeowner and her 14 year old daughter, who, as you can imagine, are incredibly shaken up. They were tearing up as we interviewed them. But they detailed how around one o'clock this morning, the mom says she heard a commotion. She was asleep, of course. The daughter was also asleep. And then she saw a man go into her daughter's room. She confronted him. They things got physical and violent. She had some injuries to her hand and to her collarbone. And then she was screaming for help from her downstairs neighbor, who luckily heard the mom screaming. He went inside their house and he confronted the suspect himself. Things went down to the basement. The mom and her daughter said that they didn't actually see what happens next. But we do know that the downstairs neighbor actually ended up shooting the intruder and killing him. And mom says that she thinks if that didn't happen, this intruder would have killed her and her daughter. A broken door at this home, evidence of the forced entry that took place on the 1600 block of Griffith Street in Ronhurst. Police say it was around 110 this morning when a man, believed to be in his 40s, broke into a woman's second floor apartment and made his way into her daughter's room. Sources tell us a neighbor heard a commotion and confronted the suspect. Police say a struggle ensued. And at some point, the intruder was shot in the chest. He was pronounced dead at the hospital shortly after. I'm shocked. I mean, for this to happen right next door, it's shocking. John, I am actually with the mom and her daughter right now. Your name is Evelyn, right? Yes. Tell me a little bit about what happened overnight. And show me, you said you had some injuries to your hands. And you didn't recognize him? And then your downstairs neighbor, fortunately, came to your rescue. I'm so glad that you and your daughter are OK. Thank you for sharing with us. And John, right now, at this point, police have not said whether there's going to be any charges filed in this incident. But homicide detectives are continuing to investigate this incident.
