Welcome to Chopstick Travel and welcome to Indonesia.
Today we are on the island of Bali
and we're going to be taking you
for a breakfast street food tour
followed by a trip deep into the Balinese jungle
to try a relatively unknown dish here
called urutan asap, a smoked Balinese sausage.
It's gonna be a great episode
so make sure you stay tuned until the end.
Let's go eat some Indonesia food.
So for our first stop today here in Bali,
we are trying a traditional dessert
but also you can have for breakfast.
It's called lak lak.
So they're making it on a wood fire.
It's a small pandan pancake
made with rice flour and coconut.
So you can see he's pouring them in individually,
one by one, cook away on this hot, hot flame.
And this is something you can really only try here in Bali.
It's called lak lak.
On other islands, it's called serabi.
But here in Bali, they call it lak lak.
I'm really looking forward to trying it out,
making it fresh.
Looks awesome.
So this is the final product, the lak lak.
Beautiful green little pillows, little pucks, if you will.
And they smell so good.
So let's go order some up.
I can't wait to try this.
So the lak lak cooks just a minute or two.
It's really fast and then they kind of peel it out
of the lak lak frying pan,
whatever you want to call it.
But they don't only have lak lak,
which they have right here.
It's served with palm sugar in this little bag here
and also some coconut.
But they also have other Balinese desserts.
All look really good.
There's some with cassava.
There's some wrapped up.
A lot of the ingredients are pretty similar though,
like coconut and pandan.
They also have rojak, which is like the fruit salad.
I think we're going to try one of these ones back here.
And of course, we're going to get the lak lak as well.
Okay, we've got the lak lak.
As I said, it's served with a little bag of palm sugar.
I think I'm just going to have to bite this open.
I don't know.
There we go.
And top it with that palm sugar, super sweet.
And then also some shredded coconut.
Give it a little sprinkle.
That looks beautiful.
These are still warm right off the frying pan.
Let's try one out.
It's so satisfying.
The part that touches the pan is crispy,
but then the rest of it, sort of gooey.
And then this palm sugar is, it's like flavorful.
It's not just sweet, like regular sugar.
It's almost like maple syrup or something.
It's got like quite a lot of flavor.
And then you get the coconut on top.
Look at that beauty right there.
Oh man.
So good with the coconut.
Like I said, this can be eaten for breakfast.
A lot of Balinese will eat it for breakfast,
but it's a perfect little dessert snack.
And what?
That was 5,000.
So I don't know, it's like 30 cents or something.
Very cheap.
Delicious.
Definitely a must try here in Bali, Lak Lak.
Little one biter.
Yum.
It's so cool.
You can taste the smokiness from that wood fire.
So cool to see how they make it.
Love it.
So we also ordered another dessert called plopok.
It's very similar.
It's a rice batter that's filled with the palm sugar
and then the shredded coconut on the outside
with the pandan.
It's almost the exact same thing
but a little bit different form.
In Thailand, they call it kanom tom.
It's very similar to this.
Wow.
Look at that.
Oh, I wasn't expecting that.
It's like, I thought it was gonna be like coconut
mixed with the palm sugar inside,
but it's actually just a liquid palm sugar on the inside.
It's like a gusher, a fruit gusher
just explodes in your mouth.
Oh man.
I've never tried that one before.
That's really good.
Like a little burst of sweetness,
but then it's contrasted with like the coconut freshness.
I love it.
Yum.
It's kind of got like a mochi texture to it.
Wow.
That was awesome.
Love Lak Lak.
You definitely need to try it.
It's perfect for foreigners who love a little sweetness,
but you want to try a traditional Balinese dessert.
Let's keep going on our food tour here in Bali.
So another quick stop for breakfast today here in Bali.
This is probably one of the most famous dishes
on the island.
It's called satay lit.
So it's actually a fish satay.
So it's like a fish paste, which they put on,
I believe it's a piece of bamboo.
So it's actually like a fish paste minced up
that they put on there.
There's lemongrass in the mixture and all kinds of spices.
And then it's also served with a little bit of a sambal.
Right here, you can see a nice char.
They've got all kinds of the satay
and grilling over charcoal.
Let's give one of these a try.
Very famous dish here in Bali.
Yum.
Oh, it's fresh off the grill.
I love how it gets a little bit of a crispy bit around it.
And even though it's fish,
it doesn't have like a really fishy flavor.
It's quite spicy.
That sambal is really spicy, actually.
Each one's just like one and a half bites.
Yum.
Actually, that's really, really good.
So I didn't even realize when we ordered,
but we actually have two different kinds.
They're both fish satay.
This one is the lit, which is the mince fish.
But then you can see,
this one's on a different thinner stick.
And I believe this one to be the same,
but just with chunks of fish.
So it's not actually the fish paste.
It's like chunks of fish.
And honestly, these are so good.
They don't look like much,
but they're actually really delicious.
They've got a sweet marinade on the outside,
but then you mix it with that super spicy sambal.
It's not fishy whatsoever.
So good.
So you can see here,
they're making the satay lilit fresh.
We've got the minced fish,
and then just kind of squeezes it onto one of the pieces.
I think it's bamboo.
And then puts it on this nice little tray here
to let them kind of dry out a little bit
before they hit the charcoal
and then serve fresh and hot to your table.
Both are very good,
but I think I prefer the minced one
because it gets that kind of crispy bit.
So this place is called Warung Ari,
and very local spot.
They're making all of the satay lilit fresh.
Their sambal is extremely spicy,
but maybe a little bit too spicy for breakfast,
but it sort of balances with the sweet marinade.
I really love the minced one.
It's just so tender, it falls right in your mouth.
Finished off with our breakfast.
Now we're going to head deep into the mountains,
meet up with our friends, Guy and Rafa,
to take you to try an unknown Balinese dish
called urutan asap, smoked Balinese sausage.
Let's go.
All right, that was about an hour drive up from Canggu
past the beautiful rice terraces.
It is nice and chilly up here.
We've definitely gained quite a bit of elevation.
And we've come to this restaurant called Standard Local,
which sells the urutan,
which I've actually never tried before,
the smoked Balinese sausage.
And today I'm joined by my favorite, Cariocas,
which you might remember from the Brazil series.
What a pleasure.
Guy and Rafa.
Yeah, it's been a while, huh?
Yeah.
Couple months.
Couple months, and now here we are
on the other side of the world.
Yeah, man.
Ready to eat some sausage?
Yes, thank you for bringing us over here.
Let's do it, I hope it's good.
Lovely place.
Maybe my first time trying too.
Yes.
So here the ladies are making the sausages.
These will be tomorrow's ones,
as today's already been prepared
and they're going to smoke them.
They're stuffing the sausage in the casing,
a little pork.
So here they're smoking the sausages,
urutan you call it, yeah?
Urutan.
And it's a pork sausage, smoking away.
Urutan babi asap.
Yeah.
Yeah, so.
At Standard Local.
Beautiful restaurant.
Can't wait to try it.
Standard Local.
Thank you so much.
Yeah, thank you.
Look at these beautiful sausages all curled up,
smoking away over a wood fire.
Take it one, yeah?
Just one, yeah?
Beautiful.
Fire special from kopi tree.
Kopi tree?
Yeah, like this.
Yeah.
Wow, okay.
Yeah.
This place is totally hidden in a jungle.
They've got these kind of canopies set up
to protect you from the rain,
but you would never even know this is here.
There was no sign or anything on the road.
Luckily on Google Maps, we were able to find them.
Wow.
And all locals, except for us.
So there's absolutely no menu at this restaurant.
They just bring out a set menu of several different dishes.
So they've got the, of course, urutan sausage.
They also have shredded chicken.
They have a, I believe it's a watercress vegetable
with a coconut.
And then they also have the crispy pork rinds
and then serve with the spicy sambal.
So I've made myself a beautiful plate.
Look how gorgeous this is.
And there it is,
the three or four hour smoked pork sausage,
Balinese urutan sausage.
Let's try that first, just bites off with some rice.
It tastes like bacon, actually.
It tastes like a bacon sausage.
It's really smoky and kind of dry.
It's not like a juicy sausage.
It's dried out from that smoke.
So it's almost got like a jerky flavor to it or texture,
but it also has lots of chili in there.
That's spicy.
And I didn't even add the sambal.
Oh my God.
That's good.
Perfect little sausage nuggets.
Oh yeah.
Wow.
Worth the drive.
Let's try some of these other dishes.
We've got the shredded chicken with the veggies.
Taste the lemongrass in that chicken.
Very strong lemongrass flavor.
That chicken's a lot more juicier than the sausage,
but that's not a bad thing about the sausage.
It's just like the texture.
It's the way it's supposed to be.
Kind of dried, smoky.
Try one of these pork rinds.
Yeah.
You got all the different textures here.
Soft, tender, juicy, crunchy, crispy,
kind of chewy, jerky.
But man, it's got to be all about the sausage.
Let's try it with some of the sambal,
but this sambal looks extremely spicy.
So I'm just going to go for a little tiny bit.
Oh my God.
That is like smoked meat heaven.
So good.
I love it.
And it's got a beautiful chili flavor
and a little bit sour.
Yeah.
It's like a perfect plate.
That's why there's no menu
because you don't need to order anything else.
This is what you want.
And also I should note,
this restaurant is reservation only,
even though it's pretty much unknown to tourists.
As I can see, there's absolutely no tourists here.
You do have to reserve ahead of time,
probably because they're making the sausage to order.
So if you just show up here,
you're probably not going to get a sausage.
No promises.
Call ahead.
They have a WhatsApp number.
I'll put it down in the description box.
Oh my God.
It's easy.
You don't need to know what to order.
You just get it when you sit down.
You won't be disappointed.
This is phenomenal.
So I'm going straight into the sambal
because it looks spicy.
So I'm going to be the judge.
Spicy for me is not spicy for you.
Oh yeah.
It is spicy.
Wow.
This is a real all 10 thing.
Taste it.
It's the real taste.
Wow.
What do you think?
Worth the drive out here?
Man, really worth the drive.
Yeah.
These guys are like Brazilians.
When it comes to meat, hard to please.
So I mean, if you think the sausage is good,
it means it's good.
Because the meat in Brazil is like, wow.
Sausage is really good.
It reminds the region of Brazil.
From Minas Gerais state.
Minas Gerais, yeah.
It was Anthony's favorite place.
One of favorite place in Brazil.
There's a different technique
because it was mentioned that he used the wood
of the coffee tree.
Yeah, coffee tree wood.
Super cool.
They're growing coffee here.
And yeah.
So fresh.
This is like the real deal in Bali.
Like everywhere, you're going to find so many tourists
in Bali, but not here.
Yeah, here no.
We may ruin it though.
I just, when you mentioned before,
I said, yeah, done.
Oh God.
Thank you.
Just be respectful if you can.
Help them out.
Man, it's kind of like quiet, respect, privacy, right?
If you don't like spicy food, then stay away.
Yeah.
Even the vegetables are spicy.
Everything's spicy.
Okay, we're on round two now.
We all have sniffling noses.
You can kind of see the pieces of the seeds
of the chili in there.
But really, this sausage is just phenomenal.
You can just eat it by itself, but.
Try this one.
It's hot.
Oh.
Fresh egg on it.
Mm.
It's really good.
It tastes like Canadian bacon.
It's like bacon, right?
But more.
Yeah.
More flavor.
But it does, it does taste like bacon.
You're right.
I don't think the girls want any.
I don't think either.
No.
Yeah.
We'll just eat it, yeah.
Mm-hmm.
Bacon, this is bacon.
What do you call that one?
Bacon situs.
Mm.
It's spicy in the hot, like it's hot out of the oven
and it's spicy.
Mm-hmm.
Whoa.
So good.
Love it.
Lizard mouth approved.
Mm-hmm.
So when you come to Bali,
don't just eat avocado toast and smoothie bowls, guys.
Come have some urutan babi asap.
Smart.
Mm-hmm.
I agree.
Totally right.
You probably pay a quarter of the price
and flavors will be 10 times better.
Mm-hmm.
So they're using the kopi trees to smoke the sausage.
Of course, they've also got their own coffee here.
And it's very good.
Very good.
Thank you so much.
Terima kasih.
Yeah.
Delicious.
Sama-sama.
Okay, back down the mountain.
We've got another hour or so drive.
How was it?
Good?
Amazing. Amazing.
Five stars.
Real, for fun, approved.
We have made it back down into the city,
as you can see by all the traffic and noisiness here.
And we've come to try another satay.
This place is called Satay Peking Arjuna.
This place sells a pork satay.
Very spicy one.
Let's go try it out.
So I probably should have explained this earlier,
but if you're not familiar with Indonesia,
it is a Muslim-majority country.
I believe, actually,
it has the most Muslims in one country in the world.
But Bali, they are non-Muslims.
They're Hindu.
So you can enjoy a lot of pork dishes,
just like the sausage we tried earlier,
but also like this satay.
This is Satay Babi Peking.
So spicy pork satay grilled on charcoal.
They're just little tiny guys.
So you can get 10 pieces is one order,
served with that beautiful sambal.
And you can see right in the end there, a piece of fat.
So they go all meat and then fat right in the end.
I haven't tried this place yet,
so we'll see how spicy this is gonna be.
But based on what I've heard, it's quite spicy.
Sort of an interesting flavor.
It actually has, I'm not sure,
but I believe there might be some dried fish in there.
Because I can taste a little bit of like a seafood flavor.
I'll chase it with a cucumber.
Not crazy spicy or anything.
I actually think I'm gonna go for a little squeeze.
I don't know if we were really supposed to do this,
but I'm doing it.
Not bad.
Not the best satay I've ever had, but it's definitely tender.
Very tender meat and good with the lemon.
It's not crazy spicy actually.
I can taste a little bit of a seafood flavor in there.
I'm not really sure if it's the sambal belacan.
I don't think it is, perhaps it is.
But we've also got this pork soup.
Look it, so much meat in there.
Tons of pork, fried garlic in there, onions,
and there is bakso, which are the meatballs,
which is probably like the most famous thing here
in Indonesia.
You're gonna see bakso, bakso, bakso everywhere you look.
Let's try.
Okay, order the soup.
If you come here, order the soup.
That is so tender.
Even better than the satay.
Oh, really love the soup.
It's quite salty, but you get the kind of garlicky
onion flavor in there, but the meat is super,
super tender meat.
It's almost like pulled pork or something.
Yeah, that's delicious.
So the famous dish here in Bali is babi kuling,
which is like the suckling pig.
We've made a video about that in the past.
This time we want to show you some different dishes.
Satay lele, mutton asap, some pork satay here.
Yeah, really not a bad one,
but probably not the best one.
Let's try the meatball bakso,
and I'm gonna go for a dip over here too
in this different sambal they've got.
Another sambal, let's see if this one's any spicier.
The texture is so much different
than like an Italian meatball.
It's more like a fish ball.
If you've never been to like Asia
and you've never tried fish balls,
it's like really bouncy, really held together.
Like an Italian meatball is just like minced meat
kind of mixed together in your hand.
This is like really compressed together.
It's almost like solid the whole way through.
Yeah, pretty good choice for satay babi.
Not the best, but I like the sauce.
It's got kind of a interesting flavor.
It's not as spicy as I was hoping it was gonna be.
Let's go grab some dessert next.
It's taking a long time, isn't it?
So it's smoking hot as always here in Bali.
Perfect way to cool off
is with a traditional Indonesian dessert
called cendol, ice cendol.
We came to this place called Ice Cendol Mroso.
They're just this little cart right behind me here,
but they've been open since 1997,
selling it right into this cart.
So basically it's these pandan,
sort of noodles, I guess you could call them,
and coconut milk, ice,
and also the palm sugar on the bottom.
So you really wanna give it a mix,
because look at it.
It's completely stuck to the side there.
So just give it a good mix.
It almost reminds me of Taiwanese bubble tea or something,
but this is probably the most popular dessert here
in all of Indonesia, cendol.
And go for a little pop action.
Always my favorite part.
Nice.
Let's give that a try.
Oh yes.
Oh, this one's perfect.
They always make it so sweet.
This one's not crazy sweet.
It's perfect.
It's so refreshingly cold too.
And the little cendol noodles go up the straw
so you can just suck them up.
It's pretty much just like bubble tea
with a tapioca starch.
I'm not actually sure.
Maybe it actually is tapioca,
but obviously it's not tea.
It's coconut milk.
And it's a little bit less sweet than normal,
which I actually prefer.
Can you believe?
I love when I see a stall like this.
That's just literally a cart with two wheels,
but they've been here since 1997.
So what?
That's almost 28 years.
They're coming on 30 years here in a couple of years.
Oh my God.
This is probably the best cendol I've ever had.
Super, super good.
Super coconutty and just really cold.
And this one, I don't know if you can tell,
but the cendol is not really like the noodles
like they usually are.
It's just like pieces, just like little chunks.
Kind of smaller, so they go up the straw a lot easier.
I love it.
That's amazing.
That's gonna be it for today's episode here in Bali.
This is like everyone's favorite place to visit
in Indonesia and in Asia.
So if you do come visit Bali,
make sure to try some of the spots.
All of the information for the places we visited
is down in the description box.
Let me know what one you thought looked the most delicious.
I gotta give it up for that urutang asap, smoked sausage.
Something I never tried until today
and really like a highlight of the trip here in Bali.
So delicious.
That's it.
We'll see you guys on the next episode of Chopped.
