Video Summary
AI GeneratedA high-performance showdown between a \"raw\" 1991 Nissan Pulsar GT-IR (590bhp) and a \"refined\" 2018 Nissan R35 GT-R (700bhp). Despite the age and power gap, the Pulsar dominates the roll races before suffering a catastrophic mechanical failure during the drag races, leaving the final result a close contest of old-school emotion versus modern technology.
Today, it's raw versus refined in an all-Nissan showdown.
Today, the legendary Nissan Pulsar GT-IR, also known as baby Godzilla as a nod to the R32 GT-R,
takes on Nissan's notorious R35 GT-R.
Both highly tuned, both four-wheel drive, both Nissans, but worlds apart.
With 27 years of tech between the two cars, we're all in for a wild ride.
Let's get over and meet the cars and their owners.
So first up today, representing Team Refined and GT-R fans,
welcoming Jamie from AC Speed Tech to the strip,
piloting his 2018 3.8-litre V6 VR38 twin-turbo-powered 700bhp Nissan R35 GT-R.
Next up, repping Team Raw and the GT-IR lovers, welcoming back K to the races,
pulling up in his savage stroked SR20 2.3-litre inline four-cylinder turbo-powered 590bhp 1991 Nissan Pulsar GT-IR.
Let's get over and get some specs and sound checks.
And as usual, we'll be extracting all of today's race data from our V-Box Performance BoxTouch GPS timing tools.
And first up today is the quarter-mile roll races.
I am pace car, my predictions, I think I run 100 to 200 in about three, maybe four seconds.
That's just me taking it easy. Quarter-mile today, I'm looking for about eight seconds flat.
I just want to break the ten. Jamie in the 35 GT-R, he's actually an ex-Pulsar owner,
so he's apparently rooting for me to win as well.
I'm going to say the Pulsar won that, but I'm going to say there weren't a lot in it that is absolutely mad.
Let's find out. Finish line, finish line, who won that and by how much?
Old school, just done it like that. You remember, right?
So going back in the day, they called this baby Godzilla.
Godzilla is traditionally known as the R32 GT-R, right?
So essentially, this is Godzilla's little brother, kind of.
I was going somewhere with this, but it's the newer variant with a lot of power, the DCT goodies and all that,
and the baby Godzilla, just put it, hang on, one baby Godzilla.
You know what I mean, let's line it back up and go again.
I don't know where I was going with that.
So words on the street is, right, that skeleton in the back of the old GT-R, that's a real skeleton.
He's done a launch once, right, I think it was three, four years ago.
Mate, he's passed out. Copped, didn't he? Dead.
He's left him in the back as a trophy. GT-R claims life.
Serious bit of kit that, mad.
I got the engine light come on, usually that comes on when I got the launch control on, but that's just stuck on,
so I don't know if it's picked up in the chute.
Nah, nothing, nothing.
We're going now, gear two, pull it.
It was on, I noticed it, it was running fine.
I want to say the GT-R come back swinging that time.
It looked a lot closer mid-track.
Maybe up top the Pulsar might have pulled one back, let's find out.
Finish line, finish line, who won that?
Oh, hang on, what did you say?
Did you just say the Pulsar? Half a car to the Pulsar?
Half a car length to the Pulsar.
Woo, like that.
Old school, doing it like...
I'm not going to try and tell no stories here, because the last time it just went wrong.
But baby Godzilla just beat the big one, you know what I'm talking about.
Drag race time.
Faster.
That second run though, you two was proper close, right?
First run I ran third, and then second run I ran second.
I was going to say, it looked a lot more...
Your car might look like it's breathing a little bit.
Your car looks like it's smoking a little bit under there, do you just want to check?
You good? Yeah?
That man said send it.
He said nah.
He said it's smoking a little bit more than usual.
He didn't say it's smoking.
Are you good?
You good, yeah?
Okay, alright, cool.
Alright, there's some oil from the school, yeah?
Don't tell me I'm dragging.
Ready.
Set, go.
The Pulsar left different.
The first 60 foot was mad, smoking up all four wheels.
It looked where I was standing from, or it looked like that from where I was standing.
However, that GTR caught up to him quick, and about mid-track it looked pretty even.
Up top, I'm going to say the Pulsar might have just taken it.
Let's find out.
Finish line, finish line.
Who won that?
So that was a strong one car length to the Pulsar.
Oh my God, he said a strong one car length to the Pulsar.
That's mad.
Alright, let's line him back up.
Do you know what the crazy thing is?
If the GTR gets his launch on point, that one car length could get turned into a loss.
Let's line him back up and go again.
He's catching up on me on the higher revs.
I feel like he's running better there.
I feel like it's not helping.
But, three for three right now.
I was sleeping on the line.
He got you on reactions.
He got you on reactions, beating you by about one car length.
But I reckon, if your reactions are tight, that's the thing.
I reckon you could turn his one car length into a loss.
I reckon you could win.
Ready.
Set.
Go, go, go, go.
That doesn't sound right.
I think it's the engine.
That doesn't sound like the engine.
Start it back on.
It sounds more like the gearbox.
Leave the clutch on.
Start it back on.
Struggle to start.
I think he's broke it.
I think the engine's gone.
Sounds like the end.
The death rattle.
The skeleton in the back was no joke.
It was a premonition.
I'm sick.
I'm sick for them.
It's a fast little car though.
You're a big Pulsar lover too, innit?
You're a big fan.
In these situations, we drive these fast cars and they do everything really well.
But it's the old school that really has the emotion, innit?
Do you know what I mean?
Oh, man.
I really wanted to see these two leave together at the same time, man.
It's like, what do we do?
I think we're going to have to, for this time around, call it quits.
We'll never know.
Maybe another day.
Thank you so much.
No problem.
Thank you so much.
Guys, we never like to see this happen.
And definitely in the middle of a race that is so epic.
However, I want to say that little Pulsar, regardless of what happened or how it ended,
he's still putting the work.
And I think, listen, he got my respect.
He had my respect before this race.
He got my respect.
It's not easy to do that to a GTR, especially one of this power and build.
It looks like the car is not too happy.
As I say, I think that skeleton in the back was a little bit too much of a premonition.
You know what I mean?
So anyway, go ahead and end it here, man.
Literally killer.
But let's take a look over at the fastest 100 to 200 kph times recorded by the duo during
the runs using the V-Box PBTs and extracting the data using RaceLogic's test suite software.
And that savage little Pulsar records the fastest time going 100 to 200 kph in just 6.52 seconds,
beating the R35 GTR's best time of 6.88 seconds.
Mad.
And then taking a look over at the fastest quarter mile and zero to 60 times achieved,
it is ultra close.
However, this time round, the GTR actually secures the fastest time, covering the distance
in 10.93 seconds at a speed of 130 mph, beating the Nissan Pulsar's very respectable best
time of 10.98 seconds at a speed of 129 mph.
And then taking a look over at the fastest zero to 60 times achieved, this is ultra close.
However, once again, NewTek proves fastest, laying down the strongest zero to 60 time
of 2.93 seconds, beating the Pulsar's rapid best time for a manual of 3.06 seconds.
That's data to paint a fuller picture.
So today, we lined up two legendary cars from two different generations, and the times and
races actually proved the two to be very competitive.
Unfortunately, the Pulsar suffers a major issue at a pivotal moment, leaving the races
pretty open-ended.
The Pulsar takes the roles and records the fastest 100 to 200 kph times in the process.
He also wins the only drag race.
However, the GT-R records the fastest quarter mile time, so this one's tricky.
The GT-R slept on the first run, but reactions seemed good on the second one.
That said, the Pulsar only ran 0.05 of a second off the quarter mile time the GT-R ran, and
that could be gained back with a quicker shift or better launches.
So it could have been anyone's race.
But I'll leave it to you guys to decide down below in the comments who would have
won the drag races had they went all the way.
Regardless, a massive shout out to both lads for pulling up here today and laying rubber
for the culture.
And let me know down below in the comments which team you were repping here today.
Raw or refined?
And if you could only have one of the two cars set outside on your driveway, which one
would it be and why?
