Video Summary
AI GeneratedThis video demonstrates how to identify and use yellow birch bark as a highly effective natural fire starter. The presenter explains that the bark's oil content makes it water-resistant and easy to ignite, even in damp conditions, making it an essential resource for outdoor survival and fire lighting.
That's a good enough opening
What's up guys Dan here cold cracker got the camera finally adjusted
What I was gonna say to be funny at the opening and I know I'm not always the funniest when the beginning of these videos
appear but
But this tree looks like it needs moisturizer. Look at all of this bark just peeling off it. It's so
brutal, I mean it just it definitely needs some jergens or something, but
Honestly this tree right here
yellowish hue
The bark peeling off very easily. It looks like it's almost like just paper confetti coming off
This is a yellow birch and it is something that you need to know and something that you need to be using for fire starting
So the yellow birch right here is very easily identifiable because it grows in wet damp areas
So generally if you go by a local stream or Creek
Even if you go a little bit on the outskirts of like more of a lake or a reservoir or something like that
And you start looking around you're gonna see this whitish yellowish grayish looking tree
But the giveaway telltale sign is that the bark is peeling off
It literally looks like it needs moisturizer
And if you grab the bark it it just peels back like it peels away
So simple and so easy and the thing is you're not hurting the tree by doing this the tree has natural cycle
To itself that it starts to shed this bark in a winter time
It gets a little bit harder to pull the bark off, but it's still doable and then like this early spring
It's just awesome. I mean there's so many of these trees
You can see this one behind here, and it's just so easy to collect this stuff now
What I'm collecting this bark is full of oil
So what that has to do with fire starting is we know that oil burns really nice
So we have this paper like substance the bark that has oil inside of it
And it just burns amazingly with open flame or a ferrocerium rod
You can even take a big bunch of this and put char cloth inside and blow it to flame and all works really really good
And the best part of it is
It's water resistant because there's natural oils in it so it can be rainy
It could be damp you could peel this stuff off and light it up right away now unfortunately for all of you
It's not raining out today fortunate for me though because who wants to be out in the rain
But what I'm gonna do is I'm gonna grab some of this
I'm gonna go right over here on a stump
And I'm gonna show you how easy it lights up with a ferro rod so just a little bit of bark again this stuff
You don't have to dry out. You don't do anything. You just collect and you're ready to go
So we're gonna light it with a ferro rod today
Good spark down inside. We'll light this right up
You see how nice that stuff's burning it'll stretch itself out here
Into the rest of the bundle, and they'll just keep going and it burns a good long time
So really easy to ignite and again. It's just an amazing fire starter one of my absolute
favorite natural fire starters
Look at that go
awesome
