Classical Oboe Concertos by Mozart Ferlendis Hofmann von Dittersdorf

Discover the refined elegance of the Classical oboe concerto in this captivating collection of works by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Giuseppe Ferlendis, Leopold Hofmann, and Carl Ditters von Dittersdorf.
From the mid-18th century onward, the oboe, often called the “instrument of love”, emerged from the worlds of chamber and church music to become a brilliant solo instrument for the concert hall. Composers and virtuoso performers explored its expressive warmth, agility, and lyrical singing tone, creating a rich repertoire of concertos in the graceful Viennese Classical style.
The journey begins with Mozart’s radiant and beloved Oboe Concerto in C Major, K. 314, one of the supreme masterpieces of the oboe repertoire. The recording continues with the charming and elegant Oboe Concerto in F Major by Giuseppe Ferlendis, a celebrated oboist of his time whose music reflects the melodic sparkle and clarity of the Classical era. Leopold Hofmann’s Oboe Concerto in C Major follows with its lively energy and touches of late-Baroque brilliance inspired by the Italian concerto tradition. Finally, Carl Ditters von Dittersdorf’s expressive Concerto for Oboe d’amore in A Major showcases the sweeter and gentler cousin of the modern oboe in music of warmth, lyricism, and virtuosity.
Together, these works highlight the oboe’s unique ability to sing, speak, and captivate the listener with both intimacy and brilliance, revealing the enduring elegance and expressive richness of the Classical concerto tradition.
