Welcome to Fox Sports live coverage of the NTT IndyCar Series Indianapolis 500 presented by Gainbridge.
Drivers to your cars! Drivers start your engine!
It's off at 6 a.m guys. These drivers have already been awake for over six hours.
A lot of prep, engineering meetings, then you go through the pre-race ceremonies.
These first pace laps and parade laps are the first opportunity they have to kind of catch
their breath and really focus in on the race at hand. Guys in what is becoming a tradition at the
Indy 500. Devastation. This is their chance to write their name in history. To cross the bricks,
to drink the milk, to win the Indianapolis 500. This is the greatest spectacle in racing. We have
green, we're racing and Alex Pillow takes us to green. The front row line up behind him and Rossi
takes the move immediately to the outside to sweep into the lead. No worries, no hesitation for Alex
Rossi as he takes the point heading into turn two now. All clean through that first corner.
Drivers maybe looking to the high side. I'm watching that red, white, and blue car. Santino
Ferrucci trying to make some moves forward as he pops out on David Maloukas to the inside of turn
three. Pillow retakes the lead from Alex Rossi. Ferrucci on the charge and on the move and up to
third. McLaughlin is up to eight. Rosaquis is up to fifth and Daly is up to sixth. It's
Panama Ward the big loser of that first lap from that first opening sequence. Great to see Daly
making moves as now again the dance at the front starts. Townsend Rossi back to the front around
Pillow. And as the drivers exit turn four and cross the yard of bricks on lap 18 we remember Kyle Busch.
Oh and we have a big one on the back stretch that is Catherine Legge. Ryan Hunter-Reay involved as
well. Her dream of the double is over. Ryan Hunter-Reay's dream of another Indy 500 win
is done. McLaren and the AJ Foyt racing car their days are over. Right side of the screen you'll
see Ryan Hunter-Reay just losing the car all on his own there at the exit of turn two. He stays
into the throttle there trying to keep it off the wall and at the last second Catherine just
swerves to try to avoid him. Heavy impact to the inside barrier. We talked about turn two guys this
is exactly what happened to Alex Rossi in that Monday practice just got a little high you saw
that first moment he corrected it did a good job of keeping his foot buried and keeping it out of
the wall initially and Catherine is not sure which way that car was going to go. I think she made the
right decision I think that hole was closing up impossibly for Catherine Legge right here perfect
decision she had to do that and just narrowly avoided t-boning Ryan Hunter-Reay really sacrificing
herself to protect the other driver. Who leads us away from Romain Grosjean the former F1 driver
in second place the rookie in third Jack Harvey fourth and Alex Pelot makes a move on Harvey
immediately and Grosjean goes for the lead on VK over the yard of Bricks we're back to green
VK hangs on Harvey hangs on and around goes Rosenquist who has got ahead of Pelot on the
restart so too has Scott McLaughlin. Ed Carpenter team owner and driver for just this race at ECR
the number 33 and for Ed Carpenter racing three big issues with all three drivers to start this
race as the AMR safety team climbs onto the nose of Ed's car they'll have an immediate conversation
and assess the driver see the steering wheel coming off and what happens he's just sat down
on him Sato was trying to almost act like there was only two cars there not being him and one other
not a lot Ed could do from that place Carpenter out of the vehicle under his own steam now adores
this championship has never had a win but will lead the field back to green in the restart zone
wonderful start from Grosjean and Collette goes with him the impressive rookie who qualified so
well only to have a penalty afterwards relegate him to the back of the grid takes the lead of
the Indianapolis 500 and here comes Alex Pelot crucially behind Pelot got backed by both McLaughlin
and Felix Rosenquist so the champ on a charge now is Ferrucci and Rosie side-by-side in two
yeah Connor Daly there who runs fourth in line wants no part of hanging back right now he goes
to New Garden keeps it stuck in as Collette he can't surely think about it he has he does
and here comes Daly to the lead listen to the crowd brilliant pass Indiana's favorite son
leads once again at the speedway wow I have not seen racing this fierce in the first 33 laps for
years now remember Cal Cullen is almost out of fuel he hasn't pitted so in the next three or
four laps I would expect him to come to pit lane but he wants to reclaim the lead from Connor Daly
you don't need to look at the pylon and nose leading just listen to the crowd as Connor took
the lead there now Collette back in front not only almost out of fuel almost out of tires as well
those firestones have done a full stint at this point much fresher rubber on the cars behind this
young rookie is doing a great job out front but Collette knows how to lead out front this guy as
he comes to pit lane this guy can run a 5k in 18 minutes he's one of the fittest drivers in the
series he comes in for fuel now Daly leads the Indianapolis 500 the boy from Noplesville
Indiana
Daly adores this track the fan base here adore him to Indianapolis Pelot leads Daly, Malukas,
McLaughlin, Newgarden and now they all throw themselves down pit lane lap 61 of 200 Kevin
is standing by and waiting and the last time the number two team picked up six spots on a very fast
pit stop Newgarden has charged through the field for the second year in a row he will hit his marks
shell 100% renewable fuel and firestones stop is solid for Newgarden Georgia his teammates got back
on pit lane for a second pit stop four tires fuel and a small front wing adjustment he had an open
box to get out Jamie they counted below down pit road it's close as they exit and blend at the end
below making his way down next time by McLaughlin has got ahead of Connor Daly on that stop Penske
working it absolutely phenomenally McLaughlin leads Daly then it's Newgarden then it's Malukas
you're allowed two wheels over that white line all four and it's a penalty as McLaughlin brings
them around to keep the pace stay ahead of this group because they fall ultimately a lap down
but Alex Pillow now will bring himself onto pit lane and Jamie is standing by
hasn't said a whole lot about this race car he has been happy with it the 10 of Pillow led the
most laps today 34 there's that pit crew seldom do they make mistakes another good stop for Pillow
he's down see that pit stop time there 7.2 for Pillow Rosenquist right behind him MSR crew doing
a job Newgarden took McLaughlin heading into turn one but we'll have to see how they blend on the
back straightaway Newgarden McLaughlin and Pillow there they are Pillow's out of the pits Pillow out
Rosenquist behind him Newgarden has got to the front of the group Malukas making the move on
Daly down the back stretch and into three and with a very impressive pit stop Felix Rosenquist
and the Meyer Schenck team as Paddo Award gets by to just get by that was an aggressive move by
Paddo really assertive on the inside of turn three it's now on Dixon Malukas has pace pace
aplenty in that Penske it's up to what will be a net third for him Rosenquist ahead Pillow at
the front of the group meanwhile some drama for Connor Daly let's listen you guys bumped my left
mirror you guys killed my left mirrors copy kill my left mirror I can't see copy that we're gonna
Connor's got a spotter but that is uh wounded visibility for sure it could have been from the
tear off crew member or the fueler perhaps clipping the left side mirror when they went
in to service the car interestingly everybody we thought was on an alternate strategy has now
stopped that of Kyle Kirkwood Erickson though a one-time winner of this race and look at the
pace that Dixon has off for PNC Bank on board giving us great shots of that pass for Dixon
this guy is so good around here he's left more laps at Indy than any other driver in history
and we always say he's only working together one once and you can hear that call from Dixon saying
let's speed up we got to work together with his teammate Pillow they did a beautiful job of this
back in 2023 and controlled the first half of the race yeah we might see that again as Dixon now
goes around Pillow and takes the lead nobody's been better on that last sequence of pit stops
Scott Dixon did not lead a single lap in Indianapolis 500 last year he has led until today
677 laps at the Indy 500 is the 9 of the 10 team cars for Chip Ganassi racing take turns they trade
positions up at the point leading this field because again like we said if you're leading
you're burning more fuel so if you kind of share the load of being the car at the front of the
peloton so to speak the front of the pack both cars can sort of extend that window and here you
go this is all coordinated this is all very choreographed work right now by Ganassi whereas
behind Rosenquist and Malukis no no such deal there no well you mentioned the technical
relationship between Chip Ganassi racing and Felix Rosenquist team Meyer Schenck racing
lap 101 that's 10 laps away but Pillow Dixon Rosenquist all the Penske's everybody's still
needs to pit maybe around lap 96 97 I don't know if they can stretch it to lap 101 I don't know
that'd be quite a ways Pillow last pitted on lap 62 that'd be 38 laps that's too far and if they
can't make it the drivers who could once again Rasmussen who's made his way up to 16th he has
two three laps over the rest of them as does VK as does Harvey guys we just Alex Rossi peeling
off a pit lane there oh not sure if that's a strategic decision to maybe be oh oh and that's
willpower is that leaving pit lane willpower in the Andretti has had a torrid and horrid
start to the season for Andretti on the racetrack there he's got a motor going
or a gearbox perhaps on the radio we understand and there's fluid on the racetrack he's pulling
down into the acceleration lane there though the rears just completely lock up oh my god
that could have been so much worse for willpower moments ago at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway
Alexander Rossi on pit lane already the track under caution smoke billowing from the rear of
and it is a retirement once again for Alexander Rossi at ECR you will remember he's in the backup
car his hand and his foot bolted together after an accident earlier in the week not even making
it as far as his own pit stand the Andretti team helping him out one of the loudest cheers during
driver intros fans appreciate a driver who's willing to fight his way through anything to
compete in the final I don't think you can count on that this is going to be a huge battle Ganassi
Penske Meyer Schenck racing all battling for the lead here on this stop battle of the pit
cruise Dixon Pelot Rosenquist Malukas New Garden that's your top five eyes on those positions see
who makes them up as the cars roll down onto pit lane and come towards Georgia Hennebery
so many variables that make pit stops here at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway so challenging
one of them is clean in and clean out well David Malukas doesn't have to go around Ed Carpenter
anymore so he has a clean in the crew will do the pit stop it's going to be four tires and fuel he
hasn't said much about the race car but overall seems to be happy he also has a clean out which
is strategic from that team Jamie Michael the strategist for Scott Dixon a quick stop for Dixon
he told him we are racing Pelot we are not racing the weather Pelot quick stop as well he saw Dixon
coming he'll come out second Dixon Pelot Malukas there is your race leader Scott Dixon 106 laps
completed under red flag for the time being um as we saw when we went to commercial break his wife
the command has been given we are getting back to racing ways here at the Indianapolis Motor
Speedway for the 110th running of the greatest spectacle in racing his teammate Alex Pelot
away we're in the restart zone when will Dixon gun it right now foot to the floor and look at
Malukas all over the back of Alex Pelot on the run down over the run of bricks
the yard of bricks is crossed now Pelot goes on Dixon and Malukas goes with him
and it got loose it got Dixon loose from Malukas close back down Connor Daly going
huge through turn one he goes to the outside of turn two Connor Daly wants to get back to the
lead massive start from Daly and here comes Malukas and into the lead for David Malukas
and Team Penske three wide behind paddle ward in the middle Dixon's falling back not a great start
for the driver that restarted up front in P1 oh oh big block who is that throwing that
here comes Ferrucci around Castroneves this is what I was talking about that urgency down
steely and cool you have Connor Daly who was over in the snake pit this morning
just trying to get his mind off what this represents
taking himself out of the moment Alex Pelot geeing himself up before this race even got underway
and David Malukas who two years ago guys stood at this track stood track side with his career in
tatters in pieces he'd lost a dream ride at McLaren yellow flag David yellow flag as we get a yellow
flag now for track conditions and now you hear it rain drops at turn four and Malukas
was leading as we went back to yellow so it's Malukas
Malukas Pelot Daly in New Garden Dixon Rosenquist McLaughlin award
and crowd rise out of their seats to watch this race get back underway
Malukas goes Pelot goes with him down big crash behind him that's New Garden
New Garden into the wall back on the yellow immediately and the Penske man who had had
such a wonderful day rising up from 23rd to battle for the win out of this race
with 126 laps complete I thought I saw some cars side by side going into four once the green flag
drops an IndyCar you are allowed to pull out of line pull out of position and start passing you
do not have to wait till the start finish line let's try and see what happened there's New Garden
he's under his own steam oh just got onto the curb maybe did that left front cross over to the fin
curb on the inside watch the left front tire does it get there it does James it is a move we have
seen so many times here Townsend that rumble strip that curbing on the bottom of turn four
has caught out many drivers over the years blurring scenes down at turn four the AMR safety team uh
on site as they always are that is the remains that's good to see Joseph refusing the stretcher
and instead walking to the ambulance under his own steam that same for the crews but the families
are just the same I mean the disappointment there and Ashley's body language you can see it
a partner of any driver has to commit to that lifestyle of wanting to win races wanting to
win the Indy 500 and with the crash cleanup we now have pit lane open and some of the leaders
diving in you talk about committing big commitment here from the likes of Erickson big split guys this
is this is where it gets fascinating Townsend award in Rosenquist and I think I saw Ferrucci
maybe down there on pit lane as well yeah so there's Jack Harvey these drivers thinking they
can do it knowing they can do it in one more stop Kevin so I know what Jack Harvey was told is do
the opposite if the leaders come in stay out if they don't come in you're going to come in but it
was a little bit mixed did we have any of the lead group we are about three laps away from where you
could have made it home on one more stop on this but the way this is trending don't you have to
gamble that there's going to be more caution I think those that just stopped here have a great
chance of being able to do it only one more stop it's a great call Kevin Polo will again want to
go with him daily always so quick on the restart and he's already up and with the defending race
winner who moves to the outside and Malukas tries to defend but it's daily on the inside
daily to the lead daily to p1 and Dixon goes with him
Malukas goes from the lead to six it just shows you what a disadvantage being the leader on a
restart can be now as Daly has to defend against McLaughlin and McLaughlin up and on the inside
of Connor Daly and here comes Alex Polo as well almost contact into three Daly not backing down
though not letting the champ get through he keeps his foot in it stays on the gearbox of McLaughlin
that shows Connor is here to fight man I like this Connor Daly and several others taking
advantage of a clean racetrack the sweepers doing their work as Connor Daly takes the lead at the
yard of bricks the sweepers doing their work daily doing his work back into the lead McLaughlin
Erickson is up to bid that is 50 leap changes in just 134 laps McLaughlin was so bold on that
restart he wanted his chance at the front I got pretty dicey there guys Scott Dixon mixing it up
and Malukas I think said you know what I don't feel like this is the moment to risk it all he
backed out now McLaughlin goes on Daly and Polo again wants to go with him goes tight that is so
tight down the front stretch and into one Daly falls to third Polo up to second McLaughlin holds
on and the reason they are fighting tooth and nail over this lead is that if rain comes at any moment
and this race doesn't restart whoever is leading will be declared the winner it's no time to hang
Connor Daly got so close to the curb and turn one and that is a very defensive looking move
from Connor Daly in reaction to Scott Dixon popping out James how'd you see that
I don't want to put that out in the universe but the rules are very clear T-Bell I'm not sure that
was within him that's something we're gonna have to pay attention to as Polo back to the point
and Daly around the outside trying around the outside but no way through at one I don't
think Scott Dixon's going to be too happy from where he was sitting as Connor Daly made that
move how about Marcus Erickson under pressure from Malukas we're on board with McLaughlin's
Pennzoil Chevy and Malukas has made the move on Erickson now has Dixon in his sights back
towards the back in the group that could ultimately fight for this win later on there is Foster
Foster fighting with Sato and Siegel back at the front though Polo and McLaughlin
Polo slides in behind him and here comes Daly the crowd love that they love that
the Arco on board and Connor Daly looking back now at the number 10 of Polo and in the background
you see there Erickson and Perkwood two Andretti global drivers still at this race have made their
way up into the top seven Dixon having to defend from Malukas because he can do nothing
about the Penske driver who screams around the outside and up into fourth
Dixon I'm almost sure would have been on the radio about that defensive move from Daly
Daly off of four now here comes Marcus Erickson on Dixon as Daly goes to the front once again
Daly to the lead McLaughlin now having to defend from Polo
this is wonderful absolutely wonderful 55 lead changes for the day
can't help but laugh at the spotter telling Daly he's now leading there's no cars in front of him
but he knows he knows what he's doing here Dreyer and Reinbold racing in their only race of the year
lead in Indianapolis from the might of Penske from the might of Ganassi
you talk about Polo being the most precise guy out there I love when he mixes that precision
with a little bit of aggression because he pulls off some incredible moves on the warm-up lap
last year at this very place on the track warming his tires skidded into the pit wall before he'd
even seen the green flag he said it was the worst moment of his life but here today he leads the
Indianapolis 500 as we approach just 50 laps to go 143 of 200 Scott McLaughlin leads again
from Alex Polo and David Malukas Daly is fourth Erickson up to fifth Scott Dixon is sixth
now this race into the top three all-time lead changes in the history of the Indianapolis 500
fantastic stuff as the leaders continue to jockey for position but it has not been as
gentlemanly as it was earlier in the race things are starting to build the ferocity of the passes
the aggression is really ramping up as we get to the last 25 percent time and we said it about
Erickson early if you look at it Lucas makes the move on McLaughlin to P2 if you look at his
results over the last four seasons it's a win two second places and a DNF that's on the road
ultimately excluded from last year's race but on the road a win and two seconds in four years
for Marcus Erickson he comes alive at this track Malukas with the Verizon onboard just lurking
he's just been making those moves guys so impressed with how he's been able to jump up
from P6 and he's going to take the lead here you can see the run he's got off of four
great two that was a point a great run and now to the lead once again for David Malukas
real strong is on lap 132 by 147 he's gone from six back up to the point that's a that's a strong
effort there for Malukas because his first 10 laps with new tires that's when they have the
best grip that's when it's easier to make those moves have played out oh Malukas coming in wow
chooses now goes early him and his teammates Scott McLaughlin that unleashes Alex Pillow into the
lead of the Indianapolis 500 the 12th and the three for Penske on pit lane and they're driving
down to Georgia Hanbury a duo of Penske's coming down pit lane will like you said they went back
and forth on Scott McLaughlin's car if they were going to put front wing in it or not ultimately
decided about it David Malukas he's led 21 laps four times small adjustment to the wing
it's a good stop for McLaughlin does Malukas get out ahead of him no McLaughlin pips Malukas on
pit lane they'll be able to draft but now it's all about what can Alex Pillow Connor Daly how
crisp can their stops be how aggressive will they be on the brake pedal as they come to pit lane
below is on pit lane Scott Dixon roars around in the lead of this race Daly's into so too is Marcus
Erickson Jamie is waiting Connor Daly in the 23 gets the countdown into his box from Dennis
Reinbold right there comes to a stop he said he wants to make some adjustments trim this thing
out you see it in the rear wing right there meanwhile Alex Pillow zero changes on this tin
well you know what only half a second slower was Daly and here comes Malukas on his teammate into
one clear push hard here the Penske teammates helping each other out a little bit a little
bit of past the torch so where does Pillow blend out here's David Malukas you look forward that's
the inside but up ahead is Alex Pillow Malukas will have the run Malukas will have the momentum
there is Pillow ahead his tires will be colder Malukas will be up to temperature both him and
McLaughlin have the momentum and look at him screaming through three turning into four
it's a great run on Pillow across the yard of bricks Malukas for the lead once again great job
from the top five race cars and their pit crews James they come out in perfect symmetry all five
well Felix Rosenquist leads this race his main challenger at the top of the field is this man
Pato O'Ward who seems to be saving more fuel than the race leader and on a strategy which
could see him launch up and into the lead of this race and a fight for the win powder going two
laps further than Pato O'Ward and Felix has got that really nice draft off Castro Neves as he
comes around it'll be 34 laps left in this race and now he pits and he might be in range to make
it careful buddy last pit stop for you of the 8500 you don't want any mistakes here it can
still all come unglued this team has done such a good job Jamie getting to this point they really
have this car has had so much speed today they have been adjusting on it each stop just a little
too much oversteer but they've done a good job in the pits as they count them down into his box
which they hope will be his final stop four tires fill up with fuel as much as they can you see the
tear off there for clear vision as we have 34 laps to go they wait on the fuel solid stop
needs that big out lap does Felix Rosenquist the lead has come through they will pass him
so this is just him losing the lead of the race this is not going a lap down
these guys will all have to stop one more time guys if Felix Rosenquist can save a little fuel
he is in a great spot to win his first award by stopping a couple of laps earlier had the
advantage had the heat in his tires and the momentum on track gets ahead of Rosenquist but
Pano Award has to go two laps farther on fuel than Felix Rosenquist that's why we heard the hesitation
in Zach Brown's voice who still leads from Pillow and McLaughlin they need to stop one more time
Daly and Sixth needs to stop again so too does Ericsson so too does Dixon boy that was so close
for Rosenquist Malukas is coming in for his last stop he'll go to Georgia-Hannover and you can see
that gap to Pano Award has grown now you've got Jack Harvey sitting between Award and Rosenquist
Townsend Pano don't look like he's saving a whole lot of fuel for me as Pillow now on pit
lane clean stop for the pole sitter I think Pano Award is stuck in no man's land and now things
are really stacking up I'm gonna say he's just praying for a yellow because that might be what's
coming right here Siegel on the outside of Kiffin Simpson and these guys know they're fighting for
what could be a top three top four position when all of these pit stops shake out they've taken
their final stop Siegel's in that mix so too is Simpson Collette as well the rookie could be on
for a top three top four finish at his first ever Indianapolis 500 so 23 to go and this is straight
up the lead of the race Pano Award Rosenquist and Marcus Ericsson there also in no man's land he
still needs to make another stop save Pato save sit there behind the 19 of Dennis now that's
no that's Mick Schumacher oh excuse us Mick Schumacher who is a lap down is mixing it up
red white and black and here comes Rosenquist and that's the lead for Felix Rosenquist
Pato Award drops down to second 15 to go and the McLaren man has it all to do as Rosenquist
stretches his legs and this the move that seals first place for now
biggest races like Daytona winning the Indy 500 with Elio Castroneves they've been looking for
the consistency to back up the potential they're seeing it today yellow yellows out yellows out
and that's Kyle Collette that's big and the car is on fire that's a horrible looking accident
for the Brazilian rookie who had been running so well with eight to go here in Indianapolis
wow everything just changed guys the last thing that Felix Rosenquist wanted to see was a caution
right now this gives Pato Award a chance to fight this gives maybe David Malukas a real chance with
good fuel we watch as the AMR safety team tends to the rookie of Kyle Collette of the Indy 500 as
we see Kyle Collette climb from his stricken AJ Foyt racing machine and that is good to see
but he's getting performance so here's off a two oh no he caught it oh that's horrible over
corrected it into the wall exact same part of the racetrack at the start of this thing treacherous
turn two is defined this place for so many years just look at the deformation of the safer barrier
as it as he gets in there just such an incredible safety improvement really pioneered here at the
Speedway that would be a much more jarring hit from inside the cockpit if that wasn't there now
that was he still felt every bit of that I know they call it the safer barrier and there's some
foam inserts between the steel membrane and the concrete it's James you and I have both hit that
thing it feels like it's all concrete but it does an amazing job of dissipating energy as you see
the right front suspension brake rotor and hub just tumbling along through the turf at the start
caught it oh that's horrible over corrected it into the wall exact same part of the racetrack

tumbling along through the turf in the Indianapolis 500 how will this shake out there will be four
laps to determine who wins the 110th running of the greatest spectacle in racing we go green
look at the start from VK and here comes Armstrong sandwiching a ward Rosenquist on the inside
Marcus Armstrong to the lead wow David Maloukas goes to second what a pass for Maloukas
three back Maloukas three back there's a car high up in turn one but they've stayed green
yellow flag is out with Armstrong leading three and a half to go Marcus Armstrong leads a yellow
flag is out is that for Boister Mick Schumacher just gets high brushes the wall and the race
officials never risk it when there's contact especially on a high-speed oval good news is
they should be able to re-rack and restart right away we are going to restart with two to go
watch this replay here of Marcus Armstrong with just a huge run to the outside of a ward where
did Maloukas come from three now into the restart zone Armstrong goes now
foot to the floor Maloukas goes with it one lap to decide it all at Indianapolis
Maloukas hunting hunting to the high side around the outside into the lead Maloukas
Rosenquist around the outside of his teammate through one into the short tune in two teammates
battle side by side but out front the young American chasing his first win on turn two
David Maloukas goes to defend the MSR driver still side by side but will that play into
Maloukas' hands and here comes Pato O'Ward Maloukas is out in front side by side behind
it's not over yet it's not over yet Maloukas have to defend
from Rosenquist great run off the final corner here comes Rosenquist
Maloukas defends who has it over the line who's it gonna be
it's Rosenquist oh my goodness oh the month of May
what a race what a month of May for this man he became a father two weeks ago his baby girl
will have no concept of what has happened today but it is a story that will be told
to her for years to come
