What's up iPad Letterers? Welcome back to my channel. My name is Karen and if you've watched
my previous videos you'll know that I say that I'm from iPad Lettering bringing you the best
tips and tricks about anything iPad related. But today is a little different. Today I want to talk
to you about creativity. I don't know about you but I have always wanted to be creative. It's like
this magic word to me that will unlock the key to a life infinitely interesting and fulfilling.
Today's video is going to have two parts and in the first part we are going to discuss three
important reasons to be creative and then in the second part I'll explain how you can create the
artwork that you see me paint here yourself on your iPhone. You'll learn how easy it is to add
a little bit of creativity into your everyday life and since not everyone has an iPad I thought
using the iPhone was the perfect opportunity to demonstrate what creativity means. Did you
know that the root meaning of the word creativity is to grow? When we are creative we feel as if the
world and all that is in it is vibrantly alive. Creativity's byproducts are some of the major
achievements of civilization from the invention of the wheel to Picasso's artwork to the exploration
of space travel. Human beings are essentially born creative. From infancy on we find innovative ways
to negotiate life. The most creative people find ways around obstacles because they see them not
just as roadblocks but also as opportunities. Creativity expands our perceptions and along
with expanded perceptions come new ways of problem solving. Studies show that creative people are
better able to live with uncertainty because they can adapt their thinking to allow for the flow
of the unknown. Another reason to be more creative is to develop more confidence.
Being creative comes with many ups and downs and a high risk of failure. You have to be vulnerable
to share your art and willing to take the risk that what you create may never see the light of
the day. Engaging in the creative process is a great confidence builder because you discover
that failure is part of the process. Once we see failure as something that is survivable and
something that helps us grow and that it makes our work better we can release the fear and try
new things even at the risk of failing. This is also why I really love creating art digitally.
It's much easier to experiment and try different things. For me of course I really don't like
wasting pens and paper so that's an additional bonus. The third reason for being more creative
is that it predicts a longer life. Studies have shown that creativity is protective of health
because it draws on a variety of neural networks within the brain. There's also research that
demonstrates that creating art decreases negative emotions, reduces stress and anxiety, and improves
medical outcomes. Not only can being creative help you live longer but it can improve your quality
of health and life too. This third reason is really the one that resonates with me the most.
Starting my lettering and art journey on my iPad has absolutely changed my life for the better.
If you follow me on Instagram you'll see how often I post videos about painting abstract art
which is definitely my number one stress relief. And now it's time for the second part of this
video. You can see me drawing here on the iPhone and the app that I'm using is called Procreate
Pocket and I absolutely love this app. It's very similar to the Procreate app on the iPad although
it doesn't have all the Procreate 5 features yet. So this is very similar to Procreate 4. It has all
the features that Procreate 4 used to have and also all the brushes that work with Procreate 4
are compatible with Procreate Pocket which is so amazing. Having said that for this artwork that
we're creating here you don't actually need any fancy brushes. You can use any type of brush that
comes standard with the Procreate Pocket app. To create the wavy line layers in the background you
can choose any monoline brush, draw in some wavy lines and then fill the background. You'll see
that there is five different layers and you can choose any color combination that you would like
to use for that. And then make sure that the middle part of the layers is a little bit bigger. You'll
see how I'm filling in the letters there. So that's where our word goes. Choose any word that you would
like to fit in the space. Anything that inspires you will be great. And of course because we're
talking about creativity in this video it makes perfect sense to write creativity in there. The way
that I've started doing that is using the text tool. This is such a great tool especially because
the iPhone only has a small screen which makes it quite difficult to use hand lettering on the
small screen. Also we don't have an Apple Pencil. Unfortunately the iPhone still doesn't support the
Apple Pencil. So the stylus that I'm using here is called the Sensu Artist Stylus. It's not the
best stylus in the world. You can probably use any cheap stylus that you want for this. It doesn't
really matter so much. It's easier than using your fingers and it makes working with the app a little
more precise. And then using the selection tool you want to create the selection around every
single letter. And then using the warp tool we will align the letters with the middle part of
our layers background. You can see this is actually not too difficult even though we have a small
screen and we have the stylus. It's relatively comfortable doing this for each letter. So you'll
use your selection tool then change to the warp tool and adjust the letters to the shape of that
background layer. So this didn't take too long and it doesn't look too bad. But let's see how we can
improve this a little bit. When we open up that layers panel you can see that each of the wavy
lines is on its own layer. So the first thing we're going to do is alpha lock each layer so that we
can paint on top of it without affecting any of the other layers. And then we are going to select
new brush. So in your spray paint section you'll find the splatter brush. I recommend that you
decrease the opacity of that brush a little bit in order to paint in that slight shadow. You can
either create a new layer to do this or as I do here I'm actually painting on the same layer as
my wavy line. And all I'm doing here is choose a slightly darker color than the base layer to
paint directly on top and create that shadow effect. So this really separates each layer
from the other one and creates a little bit more interest, a little bit more contrast
and a slight 3d effect of this lettering piece. So there you have it. This was my creative play
for the day. Make sure you give me a thumbs up if you like this video. Subscribe to my channel
