Video Summary
AI GeneratedA fisherman joins a 10-day \"Baja Warriors\" expedition in Mexico, blending high-end overland glamping with rugged kayak fishing. The journey focuses on targeting species like yellowtail and grouper in remote locations, combining the thrill of the hunt with gourmet outdoor dining and a primal disconnect from modern society.
Baja Mexico is a land of contrasts, where the arid desert meets the sapphire blue waters of
the Pacific on one side and the Sea of Cortez on the other. I came here to compete for the
U.S. kayak fishing team in the Pan Am Championship last year. After the event, a guy named Matt Cohen
invited me and a teammate to dinner to tell us about a project he was working on. He wanted to
build the most badass overland camping and kayak fishing setup imaginable and then host guided
trips up and down the peninsula. It sounds like an incredible program you guys. I'm pretty sure
you guys will be watching a series here very soon. Fast forward a year and the custom trailer has
been built, top-notch kayaks and gear have been acquired, and I'm back in one of the most epic
fisheries on the planet for a 10-day expedition. So cool, what an adventure you guys. The concept
is simple. We'll deploy camp on various remote beaches from Mag Bay to Cabo to La Paz and
anywhere in between. Then, we'll beach launch or mothership the kayaks and target a variety
of species like drag screaming yellowtail, grouper, rooster fish, tuna, pacific sails,
mahi-mahi, and much more. If the bite is hot, we'll stay longer. If not, we'll pack up camp
and roll on to a completely different fishery. In between, we'll be cooking up insane meals at
camp using fish we caught that day along with locally harvested and homegrown ingredients. We
got steak, we got the adobo shrimp. On paper, this is a fishing trip, but I can wet a line
anywhere. What drew me back here was the hunger for a true adventure and we're in for one wild
ride. Whoa! I'll just scream right here.
Yeah, buddy. Insane, bro. All around us.
We are out of gas. His first yellowtail, he's gonna eat the heart. What an animal.
Welcome to Field Trips Baja. That's the best call target.
Anybody else can start doing this if they want to take a tire and grab one of these things.
All right, guys. Made it to the first campsite for this adventure, almost. Just pulled up now.
We scouted one spot that we found on Google Maps and it was not kind of what we thought it was.
So now we've got another spot. I know it's dark, can't see anything, but that's the ocean
right there. Pacific Ocean. Sun's starting to go down now. Yeah, I think we found a good spot
right here on the beach. We're gonna set up our little remote campsite. This thing is sick. Just
wait. I'm gonna have to show you guys in the morning, but just you wait. This is such a sweet
setup, but he's deflating the tires right now. He's about to get out here on this kind of softer
sand and just as a precaution to make sure we don't get stuck in the sand here because we are
in quite literally the middle of nowhere. We're gonna get stuff set up. We're gonna cook some
dinner. So cool. What an adventure, you guys. Just getting started, but finally made it. Catch you
guys here at camp in a minute. We're gonna make sure we get set up and don't get stuck.
Oh, the sand is so soft. It's beautiful. I already found some shells for my mama,
Brenda. All right, y'all. Home sweet home for the next two or three days before we move on to other
spots, but pristine beaches. It's soft sand. It's like 60 degrees out here. That's the nice thing
about this desert. It'll be hot during the day, but it just cools off so nice. It's like perfect
camping weather. I am just so stoked. This is so cool. You drew this on a napkin? How big is this
napkin? What a setup. And that is where we'll be sleeping. A queen-sized bed inside, and we got
four of them, one on each side. And then Mateo, our guide and our host, he's got one on top of
this truck as well. That makes five. Super sick. Okay, next one. This is actually really easy,
especially, I mean, this is half the crew here. It's our first time doing this.
That's what she said. Is it in yet? Wrong hole.
Peanut gallery over here. Amigo, that is slick, dude. What? Did you see his little look back?
Wes, on ladder duty. Shoots and ladders, just like when you were a kid.
Uh-oh. Yup. Reset. I can't reach it. You need the ladder.
You need the ladder to reach the ladder.
That is slick, man. Look at this. Wes, this is a dope setup or what? Are you kidding me?
I need one of these, man. What, you just push it? It's like hydraulic or what? I don't even...
Dude, this is sick, bro. You need one of these on the islands, bro.
Come out and do a little beach camping with you.
Perfect. No, I think you lift. It's better. Yeah. All right, here's camp. We've got the
kayak set out. That'll be our kitchen. We're going to cook here soon. This is next level.
Yep. Volcano.
Roasting some veggies, making some homemade salsa. I guess not homemade. Camp made salsa.
All the boys are in the background rigging up the boats. Early day tomorrow. Got a lot going on.
Smashing the tomatoes with a beer bottle like you do at Camp Baja Warriors. Always I do it,
I make it for 10 years and 10 years do it with bottles. It needs to be that size because it's...
It's perfect. Yeah. Perfect. Tomato size bottle is perfect. We've got the cilantro here. Yeah.
Ending with the chilies. Jalapenos. Yeah. Jalapenos, roasted onion, roasted garlic.
Amigo. We did it. We're here.
Hard part's over, buddy. Camp Baja Warriors. We are glamping, folks. Taj Mahal of tent setups up here.
Banging food, banging ingredients, banging kayaks, top-notch gear all the way around.
Life is good here on the beach in Baja. So, Mateo, what is this salt? It's Salt de Gozano,
which is worm salt. It's the worm that lives inside of the agave. It comes out when they
roast it and then they mash it with salt and then you dip the citrus in it and take a shot.
I asked you that thinking I knew the answer. I did not know the answer. That worm lives in
the agave plant? Yeah. I mean, the perfect pairing. Right. The pairing God intended.
I can't guarantee that this worm came from this agave. Well, I want my money back, Mateo. I want
my money back, I thought. Hey, salud. Amigo. Salud, boys. Baja Warriors, night one. Welcome to camp.
Really roughing it out here.
The flavor of Baja here. So good. I'm going to get our rods rigged up while
these boys cook dinner for us. And this is what, a homemade rub? Yeah. Cumin, paprika,
brown sugar, salt, garlic powder, onion powder. Don't talk dirty to me on our second date.
Man, it's going to be good. Thank you, boys.
Do we have anybody here that does not want
medium rare steak? If we do, they can go home.
Yeah, the thing does get hot, dude. Like, what a nice sear on that and how quick it...
I need one of those. Camp? That's a camp chef? Yeah. These look banging, bro. Just going to test it out.
Just make sure it's safe. Oh, my God. Look, all you guys, the menu, most of it involves fish.
We got to go catch it tomorrow. But to show up at camp and have this suite set up, and while we're
rigging our kayaks, rigging our rods, all this, for these two boys to be cooking us up adobo
shrimp and steak right here on the beach. Oh, it smells so good instantly. Life does not get better,
folks, than what we're experiencing right now. This is peak life right now. We got steak.
We got the adobo shrimp in here. We got the fire roasted salsa. We got avocado in here.
We got all the fixes. Ready to go, boys. Mateo here made homemade scotch bonnet
hot sauce. You grew the scotch bonnets? Yeah, you got to get the seeds from the
Ministry of Agriculture certified seeds from Jamaica. All right, buddy. All right. Chill out.
Chill out. Chilly out. Oh, it smells fantastic. I'm going to be extremely rude right now and just jam
my pinky in this. First off, got a little kick. Them scotch bonnets don't blaze. That's got a
little kick. I like that. Like just the right amount of heat, man. That's fantastic. Somebody
else's plate's ready. You on the side. Yeah, just set it wherever. Some of us got to work for a
living, Mateo. Like my steak taco, my shrimp taco, we're going to do the little scotch bonnet,
the homegrown. But this stuff does not play. We're going to go easy. We're going to go easy.
This stuff puts some hair on your chest, as my mother would say. All right, y'all. I'm going to
take a bite. Just formality here. I already know because I've been sneaking bites of this whole
time. But the adobo taco, I've never in my life had a camping trip where we're eating this good
on night one. Tomorrow, it's up to us. We got to go to work, catch some yellowtail.
That's on the menu for tomorrow. We're going to finish eating, hang out, enjoy this amazing
place. We're here, not in the middle of nowhere. We're at the end of nowhere. That's the ocean,
the Pacific Ocean you hear right there. We're going to get all our stuff rigged up. We're up
5 30 in the morning. The boat's going to pick us up. We're mothershipping to the mouth of Mag Bay.
So excited. But what a freaking meal to kick this off. What an experience. We didn't get stuck in
the sand, so we're already winning. We're already overcoming obstacles. Cheers, you guys. See y'all
in the morning. All right, you guys. Home sweet home. Super roomy tent. And I'm going to turn the
light out. This is what I'm looking at outside my mesh little window here. I know this is horrific
picture quality. This is my phone. But yeah, white girls, they pay a lot of money for little white
noise apps to fall asleep. This is God's white noise app. I'm just listening to the sounds of
the Pacific washing up on the shore about 20 feet away from camp here. Mesh screens open,
the weather is perfect. Can't beat it. Life is good, y'all. Good night. See you in the morning.
We're going to slay some fish. All right, y'all. Good morning. Morning number one here at Baja
Warriors Camp in the middle of nowhere. Pong has arrived about 5 a.m. We just kind of got breakfast
ready. Lunch is packed up, and now we're dragging the kayaks down. Ready to go. Wasting no time.
We're going to get out in the dark so that these guys can get us some mackerel, get us some live
bait. It's much easier to catch a live bait while it's still dark out. Today we're getting
mothership out to the boca, the mouth of this humongous bay, Mag Bay, Magdalena. This is a
legendary place. I've been wanting to fish this for my entire fishing career. It's legendary for
striped marlin is the main thing that people know this place for. But today we're going to be going
after yellowtail, big yellowtail. There's kamahi in the area. There's always a chance at tuna.
There is always a chance that a striped marlin or a pacific sailfish could pick up our live baits.
It's not really the time of year for that, but you never know. They do come in and out of here.
It's gonna be good y'all. I'm excited. Day one. I did not get a lot of sleep, but I'm wide awake.
Ready to go. Let this adventure begin. See you on the water. Let's do it. Yeah.
And we're off. Let's do it. Goodbye camp. Hopefully it's all there when we get back.
If they come all the way out here, they earned it. They're probably not robbers.
Yeah. Out here doing work. Yeah. We're cooking mep.
I'm stoked. Roberto.
Beautiful morning. Beautiful conditions. Seas are calm. Winds are light. Can't believe it's
cloudy. You guys, it rains here once every other year. And we woke up and it's completely cloudy.
Overcast. I kind of like that fishing wise. Yeah. Shaping up to be an epic day one out here.
Let's do it. First name less, last name do this. Let's do this.
This. You got great whales. They come in here with their babies into this bay.
Smaller species of whale than the humpbacks I'm used to. Oh, look at that.
Look at that.
Okay. That was a shot in the head. He's handling it. He didn't even have a rod.
The bane of our existence. Yeah.
Pelican went for the sabiki. He's still going for the sabiki and he's hooked. Punch that
and cut. Got a friend.
Oh yeah. All right. In the kayak. We going baby. Let's see what we can get into today.
You got the Lobo? All right. Matt just yelled and said he's on. He's on, but I think he's got the
sea lion that's been cruising around. That's not ideal. Oh God. He said it's fighting weird.
I'm not so convinced. I don't feel like you'd be, you'd be gaining ground on it.
It might just be a giant yellowtail or a whale. I feel like if it was a sea lion,
it would have come up for air by now. It is fighting weird though. You might have a sea
turtle bud. Yeah. You're not, I'm not seeing like the tail kicks and the rod tip. Like
the tail here. First catch of the trip. Maybe a mammal. My first time fishing in California,
there's sea lions everywhere. They're stealing the baits off the hooks. And I asked the guys like,
what do I, what happens if I hook one? They're like, Oh no, dude, they're way too smart. You
won't hook one. You won't hook one. I get this big run, dude. I thought it was a huge fish.
And all of a sudden the sea lion starts gray hounding out of the water in front of me. I was
like, Oh my God. And I start hauling ass. It was pulling me so fast. And I'm like calling the guys
like, what do I do? What do I do? And they're just cackling. They're all just laughing. No advice.
I just palmed the reel and broke it off. But, but I saw it. I knew it was a sea lion. I mean,
this, I don't know. I just feel like it would have come up for a breath by now.
Cause he's gotta be, you know, it's wearing him out. I would think he'd need some air.
The way, if it was a whale, you would know. Cause he would feel that and he would freak out. My
buddy hit the whale in Panama and that thing would took off right on the surface. Like,
I don't think the whale would be this calm. Well, I guess, but I wouldn't think the sea
lion would be this calm. This is weird. All right. Matt is hooked up to, we don't know what,
I'm kind of at a loss. We had some theories, sea lion, whale. I'm thinking now maybe it's a shark.
I don't know, but I've been following him for like 20 minutes. I'm kind of over it. So I'm
gonna eat a little breakfast. Esteban made us chorizo and peppers and onions, egg,
little breakfast burritos. We got two of them each. We got banging pastrami sandwiches. Like,
man, you guys, the food on this trip. I mean, we were here first morning, dinner last night.
It was incredible. And we got to camp and now lunch breakfast, just banging you guys top notch.
And I mean, we're going to be cooking fish all trip. We got to catch some first. I don't think
Matt has a fish. So they've got live baits out. That's what Matt hooked up on. Uh, we were one
bait short. We caught a few on the way out. And I said, these boys could go ahead. I was going
to get an organized. I'm going to start jigging after eat this breakfast burrito. And then the
pong is that mother shipped us out here. They're going right now to go see if they can get load
up with some more baits and we all got live wells. And so hopefully they'll come back soon,
bring me a bait, but I want to do some jigging anyways. I really love
catching yellowtail on the jig more than I like live baiting for them. But
you know, some days they don't want the jig. So we'll see. I'm not going to be stubborn with it.
When they bring me bait, if I haven't got anything on the jig, I'm going to go ahead and put one out,
even though I would prefer to catch them on the jig. But anyways, banging cheers y'all good morning.
I've got 140 gram vertical jig. We're in about a hundred, 110 feet of water. That's the bomb
thinks that the bites can be a little bit better, a little bit deeper. And so I'm going to kind of
start moseying out and he said to get closer to like 50 meters of water. So more like 150 feet.
So, and actually that's where this mystery animal is towing Matt. So I guess I'm going to follow him
out there and watch my fish finder. I'll drop the jig if I see anything, but let's get to fishing.
Y'all get some fish. While I worked my way deeper, the boys started getting bites immediately.
The locals call these Cabria, which is really just a generic family of groupers,
whatever they are, there's a ton of them down there and they aren't shy about hitting lures.
Look at that. Yeah. Two on the jiggy. There we go. Look at that. Two drops and three fish.
While we aren't sure what the actual species is, Esteban here tells us over the radio that
they're good to eat. So we're keeping them for dinner. I've barely fished, man. I was trying to,
oh dude, I'm on right away. The second I closed the bail. Fish on. It's like my third drop of
the jig of the day. Mag Bay, hooking up left and right. Rob's hooked up. Yeah. It's one of those
Cabria's too. Oh dude, this is pretty big, bro. Dude, I've got your line. You have a line out?
Oh, I have a line out. Damn it. Well, sweet. Right on the bottom. The second I closed the bail,
nice little pan fryer. I'm not sure. This is some type of Cabria, like a little grouper species.
Really not a hundred percent sure. That's kind of the beauty of going to a new fishery. I don't
really know what that is, but it looks like it'd be good to eat. We're going, we're going to keep
it. And I forgot I had that diver out and he just wrapped this line. Oh my God. I got a mess here.
Oh, look at this one though. Maybe let yours go.
We'll put them in my live well, I guess. I'm chilling there. Dude, I totally forgot I had
this line out when I was filming you. This is a nightmare here, folks. Jeez. I may have to cut
this. Hey, buddy. Thanks, brother. I'm from Hawaii. Wes. My name is Wes. Okay. That's good.
Thanks, bro. Okay, man. Oh, baby. Come on now. Don't up now.
Come here, baby. Yeah. All right, my man, Boogie D. Super psyched. That's dinner tonight. First
blood on the yellowtail. Sounds like, oh no, second blood. Wes has one. No, it's like Boogie
here, so Doug got one in the boat. Nice yellowtail here. What was that on the jig? On the jig, baby.
Nice. There we go, baby. First yellow of the trip. Day one. Heck yeah.
They're so strong. That's good eating, boy. That's dinner.
This is one of those three hours later. I'll catch you guys here in a bit.
Whoa, dude. Mag Bay life. Look at this. Wow, man. Huge pod of dolphins.
All around us. Insane, bro. That is crazy. Man, out of nowhere. That was nuts.
Thousands of dolphins just cruised through here. That was wild. I'm still dealing with this damn
tangle. Hookah, hookah. While Boogie and I hang out with the local wildlife and I deal with this
tangle from hell, the other boys are still getting on fish. I think it's a yellowtail.
Yeah, he's headed like a yellowtail. All right, my boy Esteban, he's hooked up. Just hooked up on
the jig, I think. Right here next to me. Yeah, buddy. It's a yellowtail. I just started jigging,
just dropped it one time. That's a good sign. He said he thinks it's yellowtail. Oh, yeah,
yeah. There it is on the surface. Yellowtail, he said. Sick. Not a real big one, it looks like,
but hey, these fish are so dang strong for their size. Nice. Yeah, sir.
A yellowtail. Yeah, on the jig. Nicely done.
That's sashimi for later.
Nice. Matt with a yellowtail in the kayak, in the boat.
There you go.
Can't beat the jig bite. Nice work. That's about how Boogie's was. Sorry,
I was yelling at you. I didn't realize you were capping a fish.
He was saying that where Esteban is, is like a good reef over there.
Feeling jealous now that everyone has a yellowtail but me, I suck it up and decide to fish a live
bait. These are pretty big baits, bigger than I was expecting us to be using out here. This is like
Panama-sized bait. Look at that greenback mackerel. They're really, really pretty fish,
like crazy pattern on these guys. I guess I'm going to go through the nose.
I don't really know how they prefer to hook them, but that's kind of how I would think to do it.
I think it'll work. He's super lively, which that's what you want with any live bait.
Then we'll send them down there. You know, these yellowtail, like a lot of pelagic fish,
they'll come up to the top. You can find them boiling on the surface and stuff, but
they were telling me they didn't expect to see that today. I haven't seen anything like that
today, so I'm going to assume that these yellowtail are hunting down pretty low in the
water column. We've got a five ounce weight on there. We're going to drop him down and then I'm
going to kind of just drift with this wind. This wind picked up the currents, definitely ripping
as well. We came out quite a bit deeper. We were fishing about 30 meters, which is about 93 feet,
something like that. Now we were in 55 meters, so much deeper, about 160 feet, 165. Let's see
if there's some bigger fish hunting out here. Only one way to find out. Just had a sea lion
come up right here, which is not what you want to see. I think he's right here. I see these boils.
If he finds my live bait down there, they will rip it off the hook. They're very smart.
Well, they're not that smart. Every once in a while, you'll hook one, which is really a nightmare.
Luckily, I've got my bait really far down there, really deep. I'm hoping
he won't go down that deep, but I don't really know how far down they'll go.
Well, we've got some bait here.
Drop the jig.
Uh-oh.
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh.
Yeah, I think that's something. Once it's the sea lion, he said,
we want to let these fish eat, let these fish eat. He may have dropped this thing.
They were saying that these yellowtail will play with these live baits. They'll come in and mouth
it and come back. That kind of feels like what is going on right now. I mean, something took off
with it, but he's not there now. But I still feel, I'm feeling like weird, weirdness. I do not
understand what's happening. That thing took off. I know y'all heard that. I mean, oh, I don't know
what is happening. I'm reeling this back in with as light a drag as I can manage. I might have
gotten robbed. Rob might have gotten robbed. Damn it. Maybe not. I think he is still there.
I'm so confused. It's weird. Like this bait I'm not familiar with. This setup is
rod and reel I'm not familiar with. I don't know what's going on. Oh, he's, oh,
he's dead. Oh, and I see marks. Something hit him for sure. Killed him, but didn't,
didn't take him. Didn't get hooked. Damn it. Well, nothing to do, but dust ourselves off and
try again. Drop another bait. It's a good sign. It was not down there, but five minutes, maybe.
I don't know. Maybe I need to let it eat longer than that. I don't know. I mean,
a freak. I let it eat forever. We will try her again. But it definitely was not the sea
lion because there would be chomped teeth marks in that thing. They got teeth like a German shepherd.
So that was a fish. And since it didn't have teeth marks, I'm thinking it was a,
it was a Jurel de Castillo, yellow tail. They got a mouth like a rooster fish, just kind of rough,
kind of scrape it up. And its head was pretty scraped up.
So dag nab it. I think I just lost, missed my first yellow tail, but try it again.
Definitely getting hit.
What is going on? How is that not just screamed with the bait,
dropped it, came back for it. I've got no pressure on here. Like, why are they not eating it? What
is happening? Are you kidding me? Like, how is he not messed up? He's dead. God, it's frustrating.
Something just thumped this right now, but just like a boom, that was something. Cause he hasn't
done that since I put him down, but he didn't take it. Eat it, you mother trucker.
Something's taking it and something dropped it. It's just playing with it. Freaking eat it, man.
Well, I'm no marine biologist, but I would say something bit my bait. I don't think that's what
it looked like when I dropped it down. I don't think that's the way this fish was born.
Yeah. He's just comes over here to catch him in my face.
This is the biggest one yet. Barely hooked in the mouth there.
So Boogie here has made a few trips down here to Baja, but he's still pretty new to this fishery.
Look at that bad boy. I'm down now. He has no idea in this moment,
but he actually just landed a broomtail grouper, not another Cabrillo. And this might be
the tastiest fish that swims in these waters. Oh, that was close.
Nice one, huh? Be careful. Be careful. Oh, they like my jig today, baby.
Banging some fish out here today. The Cabrillo on fire, having so much fun
catching them every other drop. Baja Warriors hooking us up.
Might as well catch a buzz, buddy. I can't catch sh**.
I mean, I was like, this is not working for me. Let's go to the margarita. And then he
hooked the yellowtail right next to me on the jig. So they're all catching,
like Boogie got his on a green jig. He's using a green jig. So I just tied on.
See, that's what I was using was pink and blue, which is what I caught him on last year.
Yeah. Yeah.
All right, y'all. Killer first day. Did just kind of a little half day quick session.
We got, I don't know, half dozen yellowtail. Boogie got a broomtail grouper. Didn't even
know it. He thought it was another one of these little things that they're calling Cabrillo.
I don't know what these little fish are. I caught one. We learned a lot. Like we understand this
fishery now. We all need to re-rig all of our rods. Like now we get it. Perfect little warm
up session. Now we're back at camp. Just so sick, you guys. I'm kind of hiding here behind the car
because the wind is ripping now. Wind came up big time in the afternoon. But yeah, rinsing off the
rods, rinsing off the gear. We're filleting up fish. Taking a couple mezcal shots. Tequila's
flowing. Just chilling, relaxing at the coolest camp I've ever been a part of. I'm going to use
a casking fillet knife. Carve up these yellowtail. We're going to do fish up like five ways. Matt is
talking about tataki, yakitori, sashimi, a bunch of Japanese words that some of them I don't even
know. I'm stoked. We got several species we're going to eat. I didn't know he spoke Japanese
either. Yeah, a bunch of different presentations. But right now we're just kind of enjoying the
camp lifestyle. Like I'm really not filming a ton. I'm kind of slacking on my job just because
day one out here. Like our first full day here at camp. And look at this, you guys. Look at this
compound we have built here in the middle of nowhere on the beach. What an epic freaking
place. What an epic operation. You guys will be able to book this. I'll have information for that
by the time this comes out. I'll be putting down in the description and all that. Y'all need to
come out and do this. I mean we're just day one of eight and this is already just such an epic
experience. Lots coming up from this. But we're going to kind of get everything organized. Get
these fish cleaned off. And then we're going to whip up some incredible fish meals for you guys.
All right, Wes Calvin here is going to get the throats, the collars. This is a often wasted
piece of meat. It's got a completely different texture. It's a fantastic cut. Great for throwing
on the grill. Here we go, baby. Saltwater quail. Saltwater quail. Like a little pigeon.
Hey, you going to eat the heart of your first yellowtail, bro? Really? That's the tradition,
man. Everybody knows that. Everybody knows that, man. Give me a mezcal shot first. Oh,
now we're talking. This is actually my fish, too. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Perfect. His first yellowtail
is going to eat the heart. Oh, no hesitation. No hesitation. What a beast. Yes, sir.
What an animal. All right, Wes, what do we got here? What do we got here? We got
yellowtail collar. Yellowtail belly. Yellowtail belly. Smoked Hawaiian sea salt from the islands.
Do that again. The wind was kind of blowing. Yeah, I think you missed. I think you missed
the whole thing. Homemade yakitori going down on the belly's throats. We're going to put this
on the charcoal. Good vibes here at Camp Baja Warriors. The end of nowhere, buddy. I've been
in the middle of nowhere. This is the end of nowhere. What is yakitori? I will taste it.
I've heard of it. Oh, yeah. The umami. I'm just saying buzzwords right now. It's delicious.
What did you say about my mommy? That's the mess Kyle talking. Mateo here is going to do
some nigiri, which is basically raw fish on top of some rice, but it's not just any old rice.
Like sushi rice. What are you going to put on this? The yellowtail? Yeah, and our bonito blanco.
Pacific bonito, too? Yeah, so we'll do sashimi without the rice, nigiri with the rice,
and we got some Persian cucumbers we're going to chop up, and we got some Asian dressing we're
going to toss in that. Flirt, buddy. Flirt. Are you kidding me? This is camp. We're not supposed
to have this fancy stuff. All right, we got the bellies and the collars. Got a little crispy.
A little extra well done. It's not medium rare. We're cooking in the dark. Wes said,
don't judge me. We're cooking in the dark. All right, we're going to try a little bit of this
collar. We're camping, eating with our fingers. Oh, dude, this piece is fantastic. Juicy, moist.
The collar on any fish, it's got a different texture than the fillets.
With redfish, I always say it tastes like barbecued chicken, kind of. You leave the skin
on there. Dude, this one's really good. You picked up the wrong piece. It's almost got the texture
of chicken thighs, that kind of fatty chicken. Dude, this is freaking good. So good, you guys.
Well, I am filming you, and this is all going in the episode now.
As the night winds down, I can't wipe the smile off my face.
We've got the marinated cucumbers. We've got the nigiri. Bonito. That's not yellowfin tuna.
Spoiler alert, that's bonito and yellowtail. So fantastic, both of them. Totally different
flavor profiles. Both delicious. Cheers, you guys. Welcome to Camp Baja Warriors.
There's something primal about getting together with fellow men, eating fish you harvested
yourself with your fingers, and sleeping under the stars to the sound of crashing waves.
Just looking like a snack, that red on that white. It awakens something inside of you
that modern society constantly quiets. West tested, west approved. Wested approved.
Let's swim in today. Can't get it any fresher unless we carved it up on the kayaks.
On a trip like this, the fishing almost becomes an afterthought.
I came back down here to Baja to quench my thirst for an adventure. And so far,
these boys at Baja Warriors are delivering on every front. So good. And I can't wait to see
what the rest of this expedition has in store for us. If you want to go on one of these trips,
you can. You can find more information at BajaWarriors.com. You can even ask about coming
on one of my trips because I've already decided to come out here and guide clients a few times
a year. But with or without me, I guarantee a trip that you'll be talking about for the rest
of your days. Coming up next episode, we're heading back out into Mag Bay to see if I can
get redemption on these yellowtail. Oh, good fish. Dude, I can't stop it. Then we're packing
up camp and moving to the complete other side of the Baja Peninsula in pursuit of bigger fish
and a hotter bite in the Sea of Cortez. Oh, buddy. Yes. Ow.
