AI GeneratedThis intermediate British English listening course, led by Dylan, uses a series of humorous dialogues and comedic sketches to test comprehension. Students listen to various scenarios, answer specific questions, and verify their understanding with subtitles. The lesson concludes with a performance score and a difficulty ranking to help learners identify areas for improvement.
Hello everyone and welcome to another British English intermediate listening exercise.
My name is Dylan and as always, I will be your teacher for the day.
So, if you are new here, firstly, welcome.
Secondly, you are probably wondering how all of this works so let me be the first to explain.
Well, first you will see an image and then you will hear a question.
This will then be followed by a short dialogue,
so listen carefully and try to answer the question.
We will then replay the clip with English subtitles
and go through the answer together to see if you got it correct.
In total, there are 12 individual questions for you to answer.
Finally, at the end of the video, I will give you your English listening score
as well as ranking the questions in order of difficulty.
But you know guys, the fun does not stop there because
halfway through the exercise, there is a mysterious bonus round
where all you have to do is just sit back, relax and enjoy.
Before the video starts, I'm going to tell you right now, this is a very funny episode.
It's slightly challenging but I promise you every single question is very funny.
Alright guys, so the best of luck and I will see you very shortly at the first question.
Okay guys, before we get started, some of these questions are a bit easier,
some are a bit harder, so try to complete as many as you can before moving on.
Okay, first question and this is a funny one.
So, we have a man called Henry who is attending his friend's son's birthday party.
So, the question is, how old is the birthday boy?
Of course.
Five candles?
You bought him a present?
Well, I know you are always complaining about having to drive him everywhere.
So, I bought him some driving lessons.
How great is that?
Yes.
The problem is you are 10 years too early.
Really?
Other present?
But you've only just got here.
He is not 12.
Henry, thank you so much for making it.
No problem, mate.
I wouldn't miss your son's birthday for the world.
We really appreciate that.
So, did you manage to get the birthday cake?
Of course.
Thank you.
And did you get the right number of candles?
Of course.
I asked for five candles.
One for each year the little scamp has been alive.
So, where is the birthday boy anyway?
Five candles?
Do you even know how old my son is?
Obviously.
I was just kidding about the candles.
Now, where is the little scamp?
I need to give him his present.
You bought him a present?
What did you get him?
Well, I know you are always complaining about having to drive him everywhere.
So, I bought him some driving lessons.
How great is that?
Driving lessons?
You do realize you have to be 17 to drive?
Yes.
Is there a problem?
The problem is you are 10 years too early.
Really?
Really.
Oh.
Well, in that case, you definitely won't like the other present I got him.
Other present?
Never mind, I will take it back now.
Anyway, it has been an absolute pleasure, mate.
But I really should be heading home.
But you've only just got here.
I know, right?
Anyway, wish the little scamp a happy 12th birthday from his uncle Henry.
He is not 12.
Don't worry, guys.
That will not be the last we see of Henry today.
So, for the second question, we have a woman called Elizabeth
who is talking to her neighbor who is called Mark.
So, Elizabeth has recently fallen in love with gardening.
So, the question is,
which flowers does Elizabeth currently have growing in her garden?
Hi, Elizabeth.
I don't think I have ever seen you this happy before.
What have you been up to?
I have fallen in love, Mark.
Really?
Yes.
It turns out the love of my life has been in front of me this whole time.
Wow.
I know exactly what you mean.
Honestly, Elizabeth, I have been wanting to express my love for such a long time.
So, it is just such a relief to hear that you feel the same.
Gardening.
Excuse me?
I have fallen in love with gardening.
Who's that?
It's amazing.
I currently have three red flowers, five blue ones, two orange ones and even a purple one.
Wow.
Amazing.
I'm so happy for you.
Were you saying something about being in love with me earlier?
I was just kidding.
Ha ha, classic Mark.
Right.
Well, I should probably get back to my gardening.
See you later.
I love you so much.
What?
Nothing.
See you around.
Hi, Elizabeth.
I don't think I have ever seen you this happy before.
What have you been up to?
I have fallen in love, Mark.
Really?
Yes.
It turns out the love of my life has been in front of me this whole time.
Wow.
I know exactly what you mean.

I was just kidding.
Haha, classic Mark.
Right.
Well, I should probably get back to my gardening.
See you later.
I love you so much.
What?
Nothing.
See you around.
Wow, that was painful to watch.
Okay, question number three.
And this is a bit of a kooky one, as you can probably tell by the photo behind me.
If something is kooky, it just means that it is weird or unusual in some way.
So this man has just had a crazy dream and he is telling his girlfriend all about it.
The question is, in which order did the following events occur in?
Wow.
Is everything okay?
I just had the craziest dream.
Oh, that's nice, darling.
Aren't you going to ask me what happened?
Ah, yes, of course.
So, what happened in your crazy dream?
Well, to begin with, I was just doing my usual job.
You were taming lions at the circus?
Yes.
But then suddenly, I see a blue light coming from the sky.
That's crazy.
So what happened next?
Well, before I know it, I am being abducted by aliens.
Damn, I hate when that happens.
I know.
Anyway, I was scared at first, but they were actually really nice.
They just wanted me to help them get their friend out of prison.
I see.
So what happened next?
Well, they dropped me off to the prison and we managed to break this guy out.
It turns out he was completely innocent all along.
Sure.
So then what happened?
Well, to say thank you for helping, the aliens dropped me home.
They even gave me a present.
Really?
What was the present?
It was a magic dog called Trevor.
He was so cool.
Nice.
I'm glad to hear everything worked out.
Wow.
Is everything okay?
I just had the craziest dream.
Oh, that's nice, darling.
Aren't you going to ask me what happened?
Ah yes, of course.
So, what happened in your crazy dream?

It was a magic dog called Trevor.

Nice.
I'm glad to hear everything worked out.
Wow, I hope your dreams are as exciting as that, because mine are definitely not.
Anyway, this is one of my favourite questions,
as we have a lucky man here who has won the lottery.
How exciting is that?
So I would like you to listen to the dialogue
and work out what this lucky, lucky man decides to spend his lottery winnings on.
Hello?
Hi, is this Henry speaking?
The one and only.
How can I help?
Well, Henry, this is Lena from the National Lottery Association.
I wanted to inform you that you have won today's prize of £1 million.
Cool.
Cheers for letting me know.
Did you hear me correctly?
Yes, I won a million pounds.
It is no big deal.
I am used to getting good luck.
Henry the millionaire is back.
Um...
Okay.
So what are you going to spend it on?
Well, firstly, I am going to buy two tigers and a house with nine bedrooms.
I will then buy a vending machine for each bedroom and an extra one just for the kitchen.
Are you serious?
Because after tax, £1 million probably isn't enough to support all this.
I will then buy a gold crown for myself and one for each of my tigers.
Finally, I will buy a hot tub.
A gold crown?
I strongly suggest that you reconsider these purchases.
After tax you will only be receiving...
Your name is Lena, right?
Yes.
Are you a financial advisor?
No, I work for the National Lottery Association.
Then you will excuse me if I don't listen to your advice.
Now, are we done here?
I need to speak to my tiger guy.
Yes, we are done.
But don't say that I didn't warn you.
Hello?

Classic Henry.
You either love him or you love him.
Okay, for this question we have two British lads who are going on a cheeky lads holiday.
So, they are up to no good and they're basically planning what they would like to do today.
So, the question is which one of the following activities are they not going to do today?
Yes, mate.
Last night was crazy.
I know, mate.
Absolutely mental.
I can't believe we stayed up till 11.30 pm.
So, what's the plan for today?
Well, today I was thinking we could go to the beach and we can try to go surfing.
After that, we could go for a walk around the woods.
Finally, we will finish the day at the bar.
Yes, mate.
That sounds wicked.
But there is just a couple of small problems.
Really?
What's the problem?
Well, mate.
Firstly, I don't know how to swim.
So, I am scared of surfing.
Secondly, I was attacked by a bear in the woods when I was younger.
So, I am petrified of going back.
Um.
Wow.
I was not expecting that.
Yes, mate.
So, maybe we could just chill at the beach and then we could go to the bar later.
That sounds a bit boring.
What scares you the most, bears or swimming?
Honestly, I am probably more scared of bears.
I haven't been to the woods for 10 years now.
Okay.
Well, what if I hold your hand the whole time we are there?
Do you promise we won't see any bears?
I promise.
You are safe with me.
Okay, mate.
Give me your hand and let's do this.
Yes, mate.
Last night was crazy.

Those cheeky lads.
Let's hope they don't see any bears.
Okay, question number six which means we are very close to the bonus round.
So, for this question we have a man who has recently come into a bit of money
but due to some reckless spending he is having to return some of the items that he purchased.
So, the question is which items does the man end up returning?
Hello and welcome to The Extravagant Store.
My name is Chloe.
How may I help you today, sir?
Hi, Chloe.
I came in about a week ago and spent a fair amount of money.
Anyway, to cut a long story short...
Let me guess.
You've run out of money and now you want to return what you purchased.
Okay, firstly, Chloe, it is very rude to interrupt someone when they are talking.
And secondly, the only thing Henry runs out of is patience for low-quality products.
And money.
Okay, fine.
Yes, if it will make you happy.
Let's just say I have run out of money.
So, what is your return policy then, please?
Well, Henry, the former millionaire,
luckily for you we accept returns on hot tubs, tigers and gold crowns.
However, we cannot accept refunds on vending machines or houses
and all items must be in the original condition.
I see.
Would bike marks count as original condition?
What do you think?
Yes?
No.
Oh.
Well, in that case, I would like to return both my tigers and my hot tub.
Ideally, I would return the three gold crowns as well,
but due to your absurd agenda against tiger teeth marks,
it sounds like that may not be possible.
Right?
Actually, it's fine.
I will let you return the crowns just this once.
Really?
No, I am of course joking.
You cannot return them.
Will that be all?
So funny.
This won't be the last you hear of Henry, the former millionaire.
Lucky me.
Hello and welcome to the extravagant store.
My name is Chloe.

Lucky me.
Okay guys, we are officially at the bonus round.
If you've been here before, you know that can only mean one thing.
Yes, it is time for me to tell you all a hilarious joke.
Yeah.
Okay then.
So, a businessman walks into his office where he sees an inexperienced decorator
painting the walls.
It is a hot summer's day.
It's absolutely boiling.
Yet this decorator is wearing a puffer jacket and a parka coat as well.
So, thinking this is a little bit strange, the businessman turns to the decorator and says,
excuse me, it is absolutely boiling today.
Why are you wearing a puffer and a parka as well?
The painter looks up, looks at the can and says,
well, it says here, for best results, put on two coats.
Let's just move on from that as quickly as possible.
Okay, seventh question.
And for this one, we have an unnamed man.
You know who it is.
We have this man who is down on his luck and he's basically in need of a job.
If you are down on your luck,
it just means that you are going through a period of misfortune or bad luck.
Anyway, this man is talking to someone that is going to help him find a job.
The question is, which one of the following places does he not get an interview for?
Do any of these sound of interest?
They all sound incredibly easy and frankly beneath me.
Um, okay.
So what makes you so qualified for these positions?
Well, I am constantly teaching lessons to those around me, so the school would be easy.
I am the most stylish man on the planet, so I would definitely be a good fit for the clothes shop,
if you will excuse the pun.
I am also the sweetest man on the planet, so the bakery would be easy.
Finally, I have stayed in more five-star hotels in my life than I can remember,
so I am more than qualified to work there.
Wow.
You really are a fascinating character.
However, being sweet doesn't really qualify you for that position, so let's take it off the list.
I am happy to put you forward for the other three positions though,
and we can try and get you an interview.
An interview?
The only thing that Henry, the former millionaire, interviews for is...
Do you want a job or not?
Please.
That's what I thought.
I will be back in touch soon with some feedback.
Thanks for coming in today, and good luck.
Yeah, yeah, whatever.
Hello there, my name is Claire, and welcome to the job center.
I am Henry the millionaire.
Millionaire?
Why are you looking for a job then?
Well, former millionaire.
It's a long story.
Anyway, what do you have for me?
Well, Henry the former millionaire, we have jobs available at the local school,
clothes shop, bakery, and hotel.
Do any of these sound of interest?
They all sound incredibly easy, and frankly beneath me.
Um...
Okay.
So what makes you so qualified for these positions?

Yeah, yeah, whatever.
That is once again classic Henry right there.
Okay, for the eighth question we have a personal trainer called Abby,
who is working with her client called Greg.
So Greg has been training very hard recently,
but it is finally time for his cheat day.
If you didn't know, a cheat day is a day where you are allowed to go off of your diet
and basically eat whatever you want for one day only.
So the question is, what is Greg planning on eating?
Well, Greg, I couldn't be prouder of the progress you have made recently.
You have been exercising regularly, eating healthy and drinking lots of water.
Keep it up.
It's my cheat day soon, right?
Well, yes, but that doesn't mean that you need to go crazy.
I have it all planned out.
Seriously?
Seriously.
I am going to start the day with a banana milkshake and a nutritious pizza.
For lunch, I am thinking two burgers, three hot dogs and a chocolate shake.
Finally, for dinner, I will have one more chocolate shake and one more pizza.
Seriously?
Two pizzas in one day?
Well, it's my cheat day, remember?
Yes.
It certainly is.

Question number nine, and we have a girl called Sophie,
who is only seven years old, but she has taken charge of planning her school's disco.
So she has taken her job rather seriously.
The question is, which one of the posters is showing the correct information?
Good morning, Sophie.
How is the disco planning going?
Hi, Miss.
It's going okay, but a bit stressful.
A seven-year-old girl should never be stressed.
Remember that we still have until Saturday to get everything prepared.
Please don't patronise me, Miss.
Excuse me?
So, do you think that £10 is a high enough entry fee?
Well, it is for charity, so...
You're right, let's make it £15.
Um, that's not what I really had in mind, but...
How much should we make the sweets?
I was thinking £2 for the first bag and £1 for the second.
Well, actually the entry fee includes a free bag of sweets on arrival for each guest.
So, then where is the money coming from?
Let's make the second bag £1.50 then.
We can get them that way.
Sophie, you are kind of scaring me.
Are you okay?
I will be fine as soon as we get our opening hours locked in.
Is 6 till 12am okay with you?
Um, sure.
Good stuff, Miss.
I will get the posters printed now.
Thanks for your help today and keep up the good work.

All right, 10th question and we only have two more after this.
So, well done for making it this far.
So, for this question we have the return of Elizabeth the gardener
who is talking to her colleague called Jessica.
Your colleague is basically just someone that you work with.
Anyway, it is finally payday and Elizabeth is just talking about
all the things she would like to spend her money on.
So, the question is which one of the following things
does Elizabeth decide not to spend her money on?
Hey, Elizabeth.
Hi, Jessica.
How's it going?
I couldn't be happier.
It is nearly that beautiful time of the month.
You are totally right.
I cannot wait.
Yes, there is nothing as sweet as payday.
And this means you can finally buy that red dress
you have been banging on about.
What?
Nothing.
So, what else are you going to buy with your money?
Well, as you know, I have been crazy about gardening lately.
So, I am going to buy a red watering can to match my new dress.
How pretty!
Anything else?
Well, I do really need a new suitcase, but I only want it if they have it in red.
I see.
Well, if they don't have a red one,
perhaps you could join me this weekend at the new luxury hotel.
I would love to.
I actually heard that they have just hired a real hotshot.
How exciting!
I can't wait to meet him.
I just need to call up and check their opening hours,
so I will get back in touch after that.
Sounds great.
Speak later.
Hey, Elizabeth.
Hi, Jessica.
How's it going?
I couldn't be happier.

Question number 11.
And this is actually a follow-up from the previous question.
So, before we get started, I need to tell you two things.
Firstly, this photo took me over an hour to make.
And secondly, a snob is basically someone who has an exaggerated respect for wealth
or social status and looks down on anyone that they deem to be socially inferior.
So, as promised, we have Jessica who is calling up this hotel
to check when their opening hours are.
There was some mention of a hotshot new employee, so I wonder who that could be.
Anyway, the question is, which poster is showing the correct information?
Hello, thank you for calling Les Snob Hotel, the snobbiest hotel in England.
This is Henry speaking.
How may I help you?
Hello, I would like to make a booking for this weekend
and was just wondering when your opening hours are.
Les Snob Hotel is open 24-7.
So, do you have any other silly questions?
Wow, so rude.
Can I make a reservation for this weekend then?
Certainly, madam.
For a weekend reservation, it will only cost £800.
Are you sure you can afford that?
Yes, I am sure, but thank you for checking.
No problem, madam.
Speaking of checking, our check-in times are normally between 1 and 3pm
and checkout is 8 till 9am.
8 till 9am?
This costs £800 and I have to be gone by 9 in the morning.
Well, we would actually prefer you to be gone by 8.
Anyway, what I was saying before you rudely interrupted
is that this weekend, check-in is between 2 till 4pm.
Okay, well what about checkout?
Checkout remains unchanged, don't worry.
Amazing.
I look forward to setting my alarm.
Well, make sure that you do, as there is a strict £500 late checkout fee.
Anyway, thanks for calling Les Snob Hotel,
the snobbiest hotel in England, and we look forward to having you.
Hello, thank you for calling Les Snob Hotel, the snobbiest hotel in England.
This is Henry speaking, how may I help you?
Hello, I would like to make a booking for this weekend
and was just wondering when your opening hours are?
Les Snob Hotel is open 24-7.
So, do you have any other silly questions?
Wow, so rude.
Can I make a reservation for this weekend then?
Certainly madam.
For a weekend reservation, it will only cost £800.
Are you sure you can afford that?
Yes I am sure, but thank you for checking.
No problem madam.
Speaking of checking, our check-in times are normally between 1 and 3pm
and checkout is 8 till 9am.
8 till 9am? This costs £800 and I have to be gone by 9 in the morning.
Well, we would actually prefer you to be gone by 8.
Anyway, what I was saying before you rudely interrupted,
is that this weekend, check-in is between 2 till 4pm.
Okay, well what about checkout?
Checkout remains unchanged, don't worry.
Amazing.
I look forward to setting my alarm.
Well, make sure that you do,
as there is a strict £500 late checkout fee.
Anyway, thanks for calling Les Snob Hotel,
the snobbiest hotel in England and we look forward to having you.
Guys, final question, round of applause for making it this far.
Okay, for this one we have a woman called Hannah
who unfortunately has turned up late to work this morning.
So, her boss is understandably a little bit annoyed and asking Hannah why she is late.
So, I would like you to listen to her story
and work out in which order this morning's events occurred in.
Late again Hannah?
Sorry boss, it's been a crazy morning.
I'm sure it has.
So, what's your excuse this time then?
Well, first my alarm didn't go off,
so I didn't have time to have coffee in the morning.
Luckily, I already had some toast made from the night before,
so I had that for breakfast instead.
Right.
Anyway, I tried to order a taxi,
but I couldn't find any that were close to my house,
so I had to run for the train.
I was nearly at the station and thought I had some time to spare.
So, I nipped into Costa Coffee for a quick latte.
Let me guess, you missed the train?
Well, yeah, kind of.
So, how did you get here then?
I actually called a taxi,
but then realized that the next train was in 15 minutes,
so I cancelled and caught the train instead.
I see.
Well, that is a truly fascinating story.
Just don't let it happen again.
I will certainly try my hardest,
but you know, all of this could have been avoided
if you just let me bring my toaster to work.
We have been over this, Hannah.
It is a fire risk.
Now, I would advise you to go and do some work
before something else risks getting fired.
Late again, Hannah?

Alright guys, thank you so much for watching,
and well done if you have made it this far.
This was not an easy exercise.
So, as promised, here is your English listening score,
as well as a list of what I thought
some of the harder questions were,
and what I thought some of the easier questions were as well.
Anyway, these videos do take a very long time to make,
so if you did enjoy it, if you found it helpful,
