Jennifer "Jenny" Martinez was just 33 when a devastating brain stem stroke left her unable to speak or move. Four years later, she's still fighting, inspiring family, friends, and supporters with her determination and resilience. This powerful story follows her recovery journey and the community rallying behind her through the Stroke of Light Foundation and the annual Hike for Jenny.
I'm Boston 25 news reporter Lisa Greschi on scene in Easton where one woman is
defying the odds daily doing everything she can to recover and even hike here
again. Very much the free spirit always. She was a traveler, hiker, she just loved
life. This is Jenny Martinez the bright lively woman who could capture the
attention of any room as soon as she walked in. She was kind of like you know
the showstopper and stuff but when you really got to know her she was just
really soft. Her sister Jessica says Jenny is and always has been a dreamer.
Recently he went on a road trip and this was his first stop. Jenny was reporting
in Phoenix Arizona before announcing her launch into the podcast world in January
of 2022. Finally moving home to the family she loves but then everything
changed overnight. But that's the thing with stroke it doesn't discriminate.
Jenny suffered a brain stem stroke at the age of 33. She couldn't speak, she
couldn't move, she couldn't call for help and because it happened like at 2
or 3 in the morning my parents were asleep so she was just forced to sit
there. She went from telling stories for a living to fighting with everything she
has the last four years to be able to use her voice again. Jenny's now
communicating through a special system using her eyes. She's all there.
Jenny's putting hours and hours of work in to walk. Each baby step closer to
joining what's grown to be a giant group of supporters for the annual hike for
Jenny through the foundation stroke of light. Despite what doctors have told
them over the years the Martinez family refuses to give up hope. We're all here
for a greater purpose. I don't know what this is gonna end like. I don't know if
she's gonna walk. I don't know if she's ever gonna talk. I have faith that she
will. This year's hike for Jenny is here at Borderland State Park and every
year her family keeps the faith that Jenny will be hiking with them for the
next one. All the proceeds go to everything Jenny needs to make that
possible again. In Easton, I'm Lisa Greschi for your local station, Boston 25 News.
