AI GeneratedThis video explains how to fix poor iron ball strikes caused by \"early extension\" or moving too far toward the ball during the downswing. By using a specific \"heel-to-toe\" drill, golfers can create the necessary space to compress the ball and avoid hitting it out of the heel or topping the shot.
If you are struggling with your ball strike and with your irons it could be down to these two
things that we're seeing in the downswing. Now unfortunately Ali is doing these things as well
so that's why we've got Ali in. Normally she's on the other side of the camera but today she's
going to be showing you the drill and how effective it can be for you. We're seeing
golfers basically moving too much towards the golf ball when they're swinging down,
whether it be with the hands moving forward or whether it's the pelvis moving forward.
When we get that there suddenly we're very cramped, we're losing room, we're losing space,
you may be feeling this. So when you're swinging through here it's really hard to turn onto the
ball and compress it and it's also very easy to hit the golf ball out of the heel, maybe top it
along the ground. So if you're hitting it fat, not compressing it, hitting it out of the heel,
you could be doing these faults. So Ali really struggles more so with the hands in the early
extension but she moves those hands as you can see out towards the golf ball, losing that space.
She's above the plane as she's swinging down here and she's going to hit that golf ball at the heel
as you can see, low out to the right. So we need to get a drill for Ali which is going to help her
create space. Think of this all the time, we're looking for space, we're looking to give you time
and room through the golf ball so you can turn your body through and get some good strikes. So
this is the drill, we're actually going to get you to address the golf ball out of the heel. Now
this is the crazy part, you're going hanging a bit, I've hit a few shots out of the heel, why on earth
would I want to address the ball out of the heel? But the objective of this exercise is, and you
probably need to tell people you're doing this when you're playing golf because they're going to
keep adding lots of shots to your score, but all we're going to do is have a practice swing, we're
going to miss the golf ball, but we're going to miss the golf ball this side and I want Ali and I
want you to clip the grass or the range mat on the inside of the golf ball after addressing it
and notice as well, Ali's not cheating in her setup, she's not reaching for it to allow for
this, it's her normal setup and she's just going to miss it on the inside. Let's see you do this,
beautiful. So we can see where the divot is there, it's a little bit on the inside, yes it might be a
little bit ground before but what it's doing now is we're forcing you in that direction as opposed
to this direction. Yeah. Makes sense? Feels like my arms are pulling towards my body. Okay and that's
okay because your hands are pushing out away from your body, so that's great. Right. So I'm actually
going to use the Swing Coach app, all this is going to do is going to give her audio feedback
whether she's a good swing or whether she gets those hands or the hand path too steep and all
I've done is I've selected the hand path at halfway down and delivery, so halfway down there and then
at delivery. So before Ali was too steep, she was two and four, she was too steep, we're looking to
get it on a good swing which is going to be zero. Do me a favor, set up again at the heel and again
we're going to do the practice swing, I want you to miss it on the inside and let's see what feedback
we get. Okay. Beautiful. Hands at half down steep by two. Okay. At delivery on plane. Okay so we were
originally steep by two and steep by four. Right. Now you are still a little steep at half down but
your delivery when you're really working hard at bringing the club in, you've gone from four to
zero. Right. That's amazing, that's so good. Thank you. Now this is what I need you to do, you can use
Swing Coach of course but if you just do this drill, what is it actually doing? So if Ali sets
up again, what it's doing is it's making you not allow for the shank so you could address the ball
out of the toe but you're never going to fix the problem. What you're doing is because you're
addressing it out the heel, you now have to fix the problem, you now have to force the sweet spot
nearer to you, that's why we love this drill. So give me one more practice swing. Beautiful.
Hands at half down steep by two. Okay. At delivery on plane. Okay so that kind of feels like that's
a good place for you, I feel like we're going to be okay when we get a shot here. So we've had some
practice swings, now this is what we want you to do. So address the golf ball out of the heel still,
we're actually going to get you to hit it addressing the golf ball out of the heel which is crazy to a
lot of people but when we hit this one I don't want you just to return it back to the center,
I actually want you to return it back to the toe. Okay. So obviously you were missing it on the
inside on the practice swing, on this one I want you to be able to drag the club this way so you
This is going to allow us now to not allow for the pattern of throwing the hands out but to actually
bring that sweet spot in and make a difference, make a change and this is going to be great for
you guys as well. So address it out of the heel, now from here all I want you to do is hit it out
the toe. You might have some funny shots to start with but let's have a go. That's beautiful.
Hands at half down steep by one. Okay. At delivery steep by two. Okay steep by one,
that's a big reduction. Big steps. So let's go again, one more practice swing.
Beautiful. Hands at half down steep by two. At delivery on plane. So this drill works
fantastically well for her but I'd love to know from you guys what drill or tip has really helped
you with your irons, just post down in the comments below. All right let's have a go hitting it. Okay.
So address it out the heel and hit it out the toe. So good. Hands at half down steep by two.
Okay. At delivery steep by two. Okay but steep by two, steep by two, that's a lot better than two
and four. So that's a big big difference and ultimately we're talking the difference between
a good shot and a bad shot for you for the most part is hitting it here versus here. So we're only
talking a small fraction. That's huge, that drill really helps us find that space and allows us to
get that sweet contact. Definitely. So give that drill a go and let us know if it works. Now if
