Jessica introduces \"Watch & Learn,\" a new line of Crash Course Companion Guides designed for middle and high school students. These guides complement popular Crash Course YouTube videos, requiring only internet access. The current offerings include Film History & Production and Games, utilizing a multi-modal approach to learning through reading, watching, and responding.
Hey everybody, welcome to The Wall Dock Way. I'm Jessica. Today's video is going to be a look inside
our brand new product line which is Watch & Learn. These are Crash Course Companion Guides.
So these are going to be guides to go along with the very popular Crash Course YouTube videos
and they are perfect for middle school and high schoolers, although depending on the topic you
could have younger kids do it as well. The great thing is that you don't need anything. So once
you have the companion guides, as long as you have access to the internet so that you can watch the
YouTube videos, nothing extra is going to be required. Currently the first two that we are
releasing are Film History & Production and Games, although we will have a lot more coming in this
line soon, so make sure you keep an eye out. For today's purposes, because they're set up very,
very similar, the only thing that changes is the subject matter and the videos you're going to be
watching, I'm going to be showing you inside Watch & Learn Games. So inside the first thing that
you're going to have is your introduction page. This is basically going to tell you kind of the
what and the why. The thing about the Watch & Learn is we try to appeal to each and every kid,
so there is a reading section, a watching section, and a response section to kind of try to get
everybody involved in the learning. You're also going to get a resource page. Now this is
supplemental, so you don't have to have any of it. This is a book list that would make this unit study
really come to life, and a game list that could be amazing resources to add to the study if you
were looking to build it out. So if you're like, I really want to do even more with it, here's some
great books and great games that you could add. I've also linked the YouTube playlist here. This
is the playlist you'll be using the entire study or course, so you can go ahead and save it to your
library. Now each and every lesson, like I said, has three components. A reading component, a watching
component, and a respond component. So for example, the very first video in the Crash Course Games
playlist is titled, What is a Game? So this is a non-fiction reading passage that is all about
what is a game. So your child is going to read this first, or you can read it aloud to them
depending on how you want to do it in your home school. And this is going to be kind of a written
version of what they're going to be watching later. Then they can either go to the YouTube
playlist that you shared, or in this case, my daughter will just scan that QR code and go
directly to YouTube to watch this video, which is, What is a Game? After they have watched this video
and read the reading, these are the comprehension questions they're going to be answering about,
What is a Game? Now every video has that same component. So for example, the next video in the
playlist is Ancient Games, so they will read, they will watch, and then they will answer. So we have
multiple choice. We have true and false. We have vocabulary, where they will be defining the words
that were in the video or the reading in their own terms, kind of using context matter. We have
fill in the blank, where they'll be completing each sentence. And we have short answer, where
they'll be answering each question in complete thoughts. And then you're going to see that as
it keeps going, it's just going to repeat through that so that the activities are varying throughout
the videos. Every video in that playlist is included. And then in the back, we have
an answer key so that it can make it easy for them to either check their own work or for you
to check behind them. And then because I truly believe that learning is a lot more fun when it
is gamified, instead of including a review test to review at the end of the study, I've included a
Jeopardy game. So for each and every one of the watch and learn, we will be turning the information
that they learned in it into a Jeopardy game. So for film history and production, the categories
are early film history, film movements, Hollywood in the film industry, film production, and camera
sound and editing. And then we have 100, 200, 300, 400, and 500 points. So just like Jeopardy, it's the
questions are actually the answers, the answers are actually the questions, and there's an answer
key included with it.
