Members of the bands Dance with the Dead and Magic Sword, along with opener Megan McDuffie, provide a detailed tour of their shared tour bus during a co-headline tour in Chicago. They showcase the living conditions, storage struggles, and the daily routines of 12 crew and band members traveling together.
As soon as the TVs get fired up, Magic Sword Camp is going to be watching Twilight.
There we go. I will not be there for that.
That's an interesting part of tour that nobody told me when I first started was...
Come on in.
What's up? Tony from Dance to the Dead.
Keeper of the Magic Sword from Magic Sword.
We're on our face-off co-headline tour.
We're in Chicago right now playing the Bottom Lounge tonight.
Welcome to our bus.
This is Randy Dixon, our amazing driver's seat.
He's obviously sleeping right now, but we're so blessed to have such an amazing driver.
That's his seat. It's probably empty.
Let's check out the front lounge.
This is a full bus. There's 12 of us.
Magic Sword's crew, our crew, our band members, obviously.
Usually, if it's in the morning, this place is a zoo. It's crazy.
We're all sitting around, lined up, eating breakfast, having coffee.
It's pretty packed.
We also have our opener, Megan McDuffie, on the bus as well.
It's chaotic in the morning, but right now it's clean.
As clean as it's good.
This is where the TM is usually hanging out, Josh, working.
This is our driver, John.
There's TVs. We don't know how to work them.
We have to call and text our driver every time, which I'm sure he's sick of hearing.
We have the PlayStation 2, but it's only first week of tour.
We haven't even hooked it up yet. We've been so busy.
Eventually, hopefully.
When the TV is normally working, from my experience, it's been forensic files 24-7.
We're just literally watching cold cases getting solved.
Have you played games in here yet?
No, we haven't hooked the PlayStation up.
As soon as the TVs get fired up, Magic Sword Camp is going to be watching Twilight.
I will not be there for that.
As you can see, there's a lot of merch.
Normally, this stuff would be in the trailer,
but because with both bands and the opener having so much merch,
we're having to figure out tight spaces to make things work
because the trailer has a weight capacity of 4,500 pounds.
We are way over that.
Some of her vinyls, Megan McDuffie's vinyls.
We had a shower incident.
We have a shower in the bus,
but we had to put some vinyls in there for storage.
A few nights ago after we played Denver,
once the bus started going, the box must have hit the shower handle,
and it flooded.
The only reason we found out was because their merch dude was going to the bathroom
and noticed the floor was wet.
Because the box is covering the drain, it just fully flooded.
Luckily, we only got 30 vinyls damaged.
It was a fun night.
Fun night. We also were partying that night.
It was two hours of going back and forth to different gas stations and getting crates,
unloading all the vinyls, checking for water damage,
realizing initially we thought we were completely screwed,
but it turns out it wasn't as bad as we thought.
It was still eventful and very scary.
It was a complete disaster.
Vinyls were all looking through our different discographies,
slipping between different vinyls and just seeing all the damage.
It was a complete mess.
Everywhere we're all sprawled out trying to figure out what the damage was
and what was salvageable.
I was unfortunately sleeping, so I woke up and I saw,
oh, maybe they're reorganizing or something,
to find out that we were flooding.
This is where we keep all of our kitchenware, food, snacks.
That is Megan's, so we're not going to open that.
Asked for Dance with the Dead.
It's probably not clean in here, but let's see.
A lot of protein bars.
Always need these just in case.
Let's see.
Vitamins.
If you're having one of those days, you got that.
That's every night for Tony because he eats Taco Bell every single day.
Protein bar, protein nuts, pretzels, John's protein powders.
So, yeah, we're pretty healthy for the most part, but, you know.
Whatever we get, we put in here.
We try to go to Whole Foods, kind of stack up on snacks and stuff.
And then besides that, whatever we get from the venue,
which is usually adult beverages, will go in here.
But I think it's empty at the moment, but we can check.
Let's see.
Nope, just a lot of hard-boiled eggs, which is me.
Leftover pizza.
Some random orange juices.
That's been here for a while.
We got a fridge here.
Caffeine.
A good mixture of some of Brogan's Magic Sword stuff.
Drinks.
My stuff is down here.
This is where the magic happens.
I'm a Trader Joe's guy, so it's Trader Joe's all day.
As soon as I can find one, I just stock up on it.
I eat a lot of fruit and yogurt and just try and get fresh chicken
and make salads and things like that.
Hell yeah.
Hopefully one day sponsorship, endorsement, Diet Coke.
Six of these a day for this guy.
That's the moment.
We have to label everything.
Tony, these are mine, because if not and things go missing,
that could create some confrontation at the bus.
It's always my philosophy.
If it's not yours, then don't eat it.
If you don't want my cloak in the fridge.
Sorry about that.
We label everything so everyone knows what stuff is loose
and no one's just taking other people's stuff.
That's the fridge.
This is the Magic Sword camp, and we're kind of the same deal.
Just dry snacks, cookies, and people get sinus issues,
so lots of nasal rinses, vitamins.
One of our fans gave us like 30 pounds of goldfish.
Just protein snacks, electrolytes.
We're not as organized, of course, heartburn medication.
That's pretty much it.
Trader Joe's again.
Let's see.
My toiletry stuff, shampoo, batteries.
These drawers are ridiculously short.
Let's see what else is in this one.
Look at me. I'm the guy hogging all the drawers.
Spare shoes for off days, some joggers, cash box for merch.
Let's see what's in here.
Almost out of water.
It's just more shoes.
Looks like the shoe cabinet for everyone.
I honestly don't even know what's in here.
Oh, forks and knives.
I think these are Megan's.
Caffeine, trash bags.
That's a lot of candy.
John's dad gave us all those Whoppers.
Secret candy bin.
So yeah, candy.
That's about it.
This is the entertainment system we don't know how to figure out.
Extra passes.
Tour manager jerky.
Just the essentials.
Hot sauce.
And a pack of trees for the bathroom.
Alright, have at it, boys.
You can't really follow me in, but this is it.
There's not a lot to it.
There's one toilet.
There's a sink.
The toilet is only for number one.
No number two.
That's an interesting part of tour that nobody told me when I first started.
Finding a place to poop is a real trial.
Every morning you wake up, the first thing you want to do is find either a McDonald's or a Starbucks where you can go poop.
If you do it on the bus, it's a $500 fine.
So here's the shower where the vinyl incident happened.
Now there's a light on in there that we don't know how to turn off.
That just happened this morning.
Apparently we didn't learn our lesson because someone's keeping their bag in there still.
But nobody takes showers in there.
We get a hotel day room for that where we take them at the venue.
Let's go to the bunks.
All of Dancer in the Bed is on this side.
Magic Store is on this side.
This is my bunk.
We have our little lights.
It's cozy.
I got my drummer John up here.
Our guitar tech Tristan down here.
Justin's bunk.
I have the middle bunk.
I think the main band dudes usually get the prime spot.
I got the middle.
It's the easiest to crawl in and get out.
I'm stoked.
I can't speak for everyone else.
I've been happy.
Let's see.
What else is there?
I think Justin got one of those foam things on his where you can get the extra cushion.
I think he's the only one that makes his bed.
See this?
He's got a premium mattress which is awesome.
This is all Dancer in the Bed side.
Magic Store is all over here.
Is this your bunk?
This is my bunk.
I don't make my bed.
Playing a little Pragmata on Steam Deck.
Nice.
It's a pile of blankets.
Nothing too fancy.
I spend a lot of time in here though.
Lots of naps whenever I can get them in.
Megan's down here.
We usually let the guys with back problems sleep on the top bunks.
Or without back problems sleep on the top bunks.
The tall dudes.
We found out a new thing this time around that I didn't know about.
The floor bunks are about this much shorter than these two.
They're not the same size.
I didn't know that.
I didn't think so.
This is where we sleep.
This is the back lounge.
We have so much merch.
Welcome to our organized chaos back here.
It's kind of a storage spot for now.
Justin always finds a way to have a spot for himself back here.
Very cozy back here.
I just like to come back here and work.
It's quiet and cozy.
We kind of organize it as best as we can.
It's doing pretty good.
Right now I think I'm the only one that really comes back here.
The TVs, when they work, they're great.
Again, when they work?
I'm not sure whose that is.
Someone's drying their stuff.
Once all this stuff clears up, hopefully soon,
there will probably be some dudes back here working on some music.
Everyone has their portable recording stuff.
Doing emails if you want to be away from all the noise in the front lounge.
It's a nice escape from the rest of the...
As he said, the TV works that day.
That's a plus.
Hopefully we can take advantage of the spot pretty soon.
Right now, not so much.
Right now, this is it.
More merch.
Just more merch.
Thanks for visiting our bus.
We've got to get back to playing shows.
Check both of our bands out.
Dance to the Dead.
You can find us on Spotify, Instagram, Apple Music,
wherever you stream music.
Magic Sword.
Come out to one of our shows.
We've got tickets on our website, magicswordmusic.com,
or you can find them anywhere.
Just search it.
We've got to get back to some shows.
Thanks.
Get the F out.
G'day.
