Taiwan, a country of 23.5 million people situated in Southeast Asia, China to the West, Japan to the
Northeast and the Philippines to the South. These are just some basic geographical facts that many
people all around the world may know, but as Taiwan is also home to a plethora of foreign
YouTubers, myself included, that claim to understand and love the country so much that
we simply must share it with the world, it may come as a surprise to you that the comments section
of these foreign YouTube videos are often flooded with criticism that we don't understand Taiwan
enough, need to learn more about the culture or should know more after spending so much time here.
Therefore, I have decided to put my Taiwan knowledge to the test and challenge myself to
take a 38 question Taiwan trivia quiz, and just to make it more interesting for you guys, I'm
gonna set myself a target of 35 correct questions, which if I fail to achieve, I'll carry out the
forfeit of eating a food that almost made me puke in Xiaobei's recent video, my arch nemesis,
the dreaded duck blood. I'm crying, I'm crying. Oh no, I tried, I tried, I tried. But if I pass, I'll treat
myself to a glorious ice cold Taiwan pizza. There's only you in my life. So make sure you watch to the
end of the video to find out how much this 14-year veteran of Taiwanese expat life understands this
country he calls home. So yes, one foreigner, 38 questions and 35 correct answers is my target
to avoid that dreaded duck blood. Comment down below what you think my score will be, but let's
jump into question number one, which for full disclosure is the only question I've seen so far.
It is a pretty easy one, but hopefully there's going to be a mixture of simple questions for me
and some more challenging ones that can let me show you how much I understand and know about
this beautiful country. Question number one, which country is nearest to Taiwan? And again, as I said
in the intro, very easy question. Three closest countries to Taiwan, Japan, Philippines, and China,
which is the closest. First question, first correct answer. Question number two, Taiwan is the name
commonly used when referring to the ROC as distinct from the PRC, usually called China. What other name
is commonly used to refer to the country instead of the Republic of China, especially by international
organizations such as the International Olympic Committee? Easy answer for this one and something
I'm really not happy about. Chinese Taipei is the name Taiwan has to use when competing in the
Olympics, all because of that big bully China across the Taiwan Strait. In 2011, this coastal municipality
was one of Taiwan's three largest cities. It's also the world's sixth largest container port. Easy.
Kaohsiung, Taiwan's biggest port, and I thought one of the biggest in the world, but yes, Kaohsiung is
definitely one of the three major cities in Taiwan. Super easy question so far. Let's see how
more difficult they can get. The capital city is situated in the north. What's it called? Taipei.
Oh my god, have I chosen the most ridiculously easy quiz? Maybe I'll have to boost my target from
35 up to 38 if they continue to be this easy. Meaning Jade Mountain, what is the highest peak
on Taiwan at 3,952 meters? This is Yushan. A more challenging question would have been to ask me
what is the height, and I think I would have known 3952, but yes, so far, five for five questions.
The island of Taiwan is located off the coast of China. Which of these bodies of water separates
it from the Asian mainland? Easy answer. Once again, the Taiwan Strait separates us from the
Asian mainland. Question number seven, which of these Taiwanese counties is known for its large
Hakka population? It has attracted a concentration of high-tech industries. The name means new bamboo.
I don't even need to see the options. Shenzhou is new bamboo translated into English, and of course,
it's got a very high population of Hakkanese people. What are the colors of the Taiwanese
flag? Red, white, and blue, as on many countries all around the world. Question nine, mainstream
theory has it that many peoples in Asia and Oceania can trace their language back to Taiwan.
What is the name given to this language group? Okay. Wow. Okay. Suddenly, it's gotten very difficult.
A language group from Asia and Oceania. Just to let you guys know, I'm not looking at the answers
first. I'm scrolling through on my phone, and when the question is finished, I'm stopping it at the
so you can see clearly that I'm not cheating, and I would love to cheat on this one. Polynesia?
Polynesian? Pacific Islanders? Aboriginal? That's so general. I can't even... Polynesian,
that's my only guess. Oh, bugger! Austronesian. Population pressure is said to have led to
migrations by sea initially down through the Philippines from as early as 5000 BC. They all
originated from Taiwan? That is amazing. Okay. Hands up. I didn't know Austronesia, but that's a
very, very specific question. A very, very difficult question amongst some very, very easy
questions so far. But there we have our first mistake. I'm allowed two more before we have to
eat our duck blood. Let's get to question number 10. In one of the local dialects, natives of the
island of Taiwan describe themselves as children of the sweet potato. To what does this name refer?
That's the shape of the country. Yes, shape of the island. Also sometimes compared to the shape
of a whale. Which of these scenic attractions is not located in Taiwan? Ali San, Taroko Gorge,
West Lake, Sun Moon Lake, of course West Lake. Where is West Lake? Is that in Canada? Oh,
West Lake is in Hangzhou in China's Zhejiang province. Okay. Question 12. From which province
in China did the majority of the initial Chinese migrants come? I think that's pretty obvious. It's
where a lot of the foods are influenced from. The Fujian dialect is almost identical to modern
day Taiwanese. Taiwan's geology has resulted in a lot of hot springs. What is unusual about the
one on Green Island 33 kilometers off the east coast of Taiwan? It's cold. Taiwan has one of
the only cold hot springs in the world. Why did I not take my time? It is salt water. There are
only three salt hot water springs known in the world. Oh no! 13 questions in, 11 right, 2 wrong.
The official position of the island of Taiwan is given as 23 degrees 46 north and 121 degrees east.
Given this, which of these lines of latitude passes through the center of the island? It's
going to give us options but I'm pretty sure it's the Tropic of Cancer. Tropic of Cancer,
yes. I think it's somewhere in Jiayi. Above Jiayi is known as a subtropical climate. Below Jiayi,
then you're in the tropics. The languages originally spoken by the aboriginal peoples
of Taiwan belong to which language family? Is this the same answer as before? I've just noticed
that this quiz is actually taking questions from many different quizzes all over the internet and
compiled them together so I've got a feeling that this is going to be Austronesian, the same
question I didn't know before. Austronesian, Austronesian. Who is considered to be the
founding father of the Republic of China, of Taiwan? Me and Prozzie had a little bit of a
debate about this. Foreigners often get confused between Chiang Kai-shek and Sun Yat-sen. I'm pretty
sure Guo Fu is Sun Yat-sen. Is this where I make everybody upset by getting it wrong?
Dr. Sun Yat-sen was the first president of the ROC but did not crave power and so stepped down.
Didn't know that. Taiwan lies on the Tropic of Cancer. What climate does the island experience?
Already explained. Tropic of Cancer runs right through the middle. Subtropical and tropical.
Humid, subtropical, tropical monsoon. Giving myself a point that I didn't expect to have to
be so specific. Humid and tropical monsoon. Question number 18. The Taiwanese archipelago
was formed about four or five million years ago when the Eurasian plate and the Philippine sea
plate collided. Which of the following is a term for this kind of island? Well thankfully it's
going to give me some options. Let's take a look. Barrier, volcanic, tectonic or coral. Yeah okay I
don't think I would have gotten this without the options. I would have said volcanic but I'm pretty
sure it's a tectonic island. I'm pretty sure there's actually three tectonic plates that come
together nearby Taiwan so I'm not too sure which is the other one they didn't mention. But yeah
it's a tectonic island. Ding ding ding ding. Several plates colliding in the area. Doi.
Question number 19. Again it seems like it's a repeated question. I'm sorry I didn't want to
the quiz beforehand and get the answers. What part of China did the ancestors of the majority of the
modern population of Taiwan come from? Fujian province. And that question number 19 signifies
halfway through the video. I'm going to take this opportunity just to remind you please like the

Question number 20. What's the highest mountain in Taiwan? Yushan. Which of these natural hazards
affect Taiwan on a monthly basis? Earthquakes. 800 earthquakes felt annually every year. Two or
three a day. Wow. Yeah. 22. How might the terrain of the island of Taiwan be best described?
Mountainous. Terranus. Terranus. Is that a word? Mountainous. Mountainous. Mountains in the eastern
two-thirds. Flat plains in the western one-third. Two-thirds is mountainous so I'm going to give
myself the benefit of the doubt and give myself a point for that one. Question number 23. If you
wanted to see the site of the headquarters of the 17th century Dutch colony of Zealandia, which city
would you visit? Kaohsiung. No. Kaohsiung. Taipei. No. The Dutch colony of Zealandia. I did a video
on this. Is it Tainan? Ah. The British consulate is in Dagao. Kaohsiung. Zealandia. It's Tainan.
Did we talk about this with Waiters and with Ku? Ah. I'm sweating now. Dutch. Oh. It's Tainan. It's
the lighthouse thing. We've been there before. Are they giving me options? Tamsui. Lugang. Tainan.
Tainan. Okay. So it's definitely Tainan. It's definitely Tainan. Anping. The Anping Fort.
That's what I was thinking of with the big lighthouse thing. What is the traditional
colour for weddings in Taiwan? Weddings is the colour of luck. It's red. So far so good. 22 right
and 2 wrong. Let's hope I can continue and avoid that duck blood at all costs. Taiwan's geography
has influenced where the population centres have emerged. Where is the bulk of the population to
be found? It's either going to be Taipei because it's got like 6 million people or just the west.
West side. I can't even do it. West side. What am I doing? 26. Taiwan is home to the world's
fourth highest mountain on an island. Formerly known as Mount Morrison and Mount Nitaka,
this peak has which of the following contemporary names? Is this going to be
Usan again? There's 3 questions on Usan in this quiz. 27. Number 13 is an unlucky number in the
west but which number is unlucky in Taiwan? Number 4 because it sounds like death. I think
this quiz is for somebody who's never even been to Taiwan. Maybe has a passing interest in Taiwan.
Comment down below if you think this is too easy. Leave me some questions that you think
could be involved in a next video more challenging for someone that's been here for 14 years.
A little bit embarrassing that these are so easy but I'm still going to do my best to achieve 35
questions correctly. 28. The remote tropical Orchid Island lies off the southeast coast of
Taiwan. What man-made issue has affected the island since the 1980s? Orchid Island, otherwise
known as Lanyu where I went a couple of years ago. The big problem they have is that's where
they dispose of the nuclear waste from the power plants because Taiwan is a tectonic island with
lots of earthquakes. It's a little bit unsafe to store nuclear waste on the mainland. So yeah,
I'm pretty sure that's going to be the nuclear waste. 29. The Qiannan Plain covers most of the
It is an important agricultural area. Which of these is the most important crop produced there
at the start of the 21st century? It's giving me options but I'm not going to look at the options.
I'm 99% sure that this is rice. Should I check the options? I'm going to check. No, it's rice.
It's rice. Wheat, barley, rice, corn. It's rice. Yes! See, I'm doubting myself now. Of course,
it's rice. 30. Today the mountain just north of Taipei is known as Yangmingshan. But what was its
I filmed a couple of videos there. There's a chateau where Chiang Kai-shek used to live. It's
called Grass Mountain Chateau. 31. This Taiwanese company ranks among the world's top 10 branded PC
vendors. Established in 76, this company group employs 7,800 people. It doesn't give me any
options. PC vendors. HTC, Acer, Asus. That's so unfair. That's so difficult. Acer or Asus. We're
going to guess. Have I got money here? Heads, Acer. Tails, Asus. Heads, Acer. Please, please,
please. Yes! 31. Sun Moon Lake is the largest in Taiwan and a top tourist spot. Lalu, the island
in the middle, used to be considerably larger. Why has it shrunk? I didn't know that it's called
Lalu but I do know that the lake rose up when the Japanese built the dams. That must be it.
Damming the outlets. Yes. Question number 33. It is estimated that 20% of the plants and animal
species found in Taiwan are endemic. What does this mean? Come on. That's not a Taiwan question.
That's a science question. Endemic. Endemic. Endemic. Endemic. Endemic. Endemic. If I keep
saying the word endemic, do you think the answer is going to come to my brain? I don't know what
endemic means. From Taiwan. Native. Answer. Taiwan is the only place in the world where they are
found. Is that native? Can I get a point? Native to Taiwan. It must be. Okay, I'm going to give
myself half a point. 34. Which one of these European nations never occupied any part of
Taiwan? Spain have been here, Portugal have been here, and of course, the Dutch have been here. So,
Sweden. As much as Lucas and Jonas try to occupy Taiwan with their multiple videos a week,
I'm pretty sure the Swedes have never occupied Taiwan. Ding, ding, ding, ding, ding. One time
known as Formosa, which colonial power gave Taiwan this name. Isla Formosa, beautiful island,
came from the Portuguese. As well as the threat of earthquakes, residents of Taiwan can expect
which of the following environmental events possibly catastrophic between July and October
each year? Typhoons. 37. Which of these islands is not controlled by Taiwan? This could be a hot
topic, political hot potato. Lanyu is Taiwanese. The Pescadores is, that's the name, the western
name for Penghu, Diaoyu Islands, and Matsu. Matsu is, it's the Diaoyu Islands. But, should we talk
about this? I'm pretty sure that Taiwan has some kind of claim over the Diaoyu Islands. They're
the ones up nearby Japan, I think. Uninhabited Diaoyu or Senkaku Islands northeast of Taiwan
are disputed by Japan and China, both PRC and ROC. So, yeah, the ROC do dispute the ownership of
those islands. I think we're down to our last question. Oh, come on, give me a difficult one.
What was the Portuguese name for Taiwan? Isla Formosa, beautiful island. I think
we made it through by the skin of our teeth. There is no need for me to be going eating
any duck blood anytime soon. By my reckoning, I scored 35.5. But, I'm a little bit embarrassed
at how easy some of the questions were. Maybe next time I'll get someone to find the more
difficult quiz for me or you guys can send me some questions on Instagram. My Instagram is
