The hard part isn't learning the techniques. It's believing in your ability to draw. Best-selling author Danny Gregory gives you a pep talk to keep you going.

Sit down, you pick up a pen, and as you start to draw, you might start to hear voices.
Don't worry, that's normal. It might be your mother, it might be your third-grade art teacher,
it might be your boss, it might be the devil himself. But that voice is reminding you
of all of the reasons that you're wrong to pursue your creativity.
Art's a waste of time. You'll never be able to draw. You have no talent. The guy in this video
you're watching is an idiot. You have laundry that needs folding. Blah, blah, blah. And here's
how you respond to the hecklers. You don't give in, and you don't argue. You just smile politely,
and you say, that's great. Let's talk about it later. Right now, I'm drawing. It's that simple.
You push the voices back into the darkness of your head, and just give yourself 10 minutes,
10 minutes to draw something. Hum, whistle, keep drawing. It's just 10 minutes out of your life.
And these voices, the inner critic, the inner nag, the inner pest, the inner jerk,
and all the other monsters who try to talk you out of moving forward, they're part of you,
a part of you that's threatened by change and by progress. You all have them,
and they're trying to protect you from you and scary things like drawing, but they're out of
sync with you right now. They're not helpful. They hate what you're doing, but that doesn't
make them right. They worry that if you start drawing, you might change your life in some
unpredictable way. They might be right, but for now, keep calm and carry on drawing.
The idea for this video started with one of the essays that I write every week. I write them
just to send out to people who subscribe, and they're free. I do it for the same reason that
I make YouTube videos, because I have ideas, and I really want to share them with you.
You can get my essays, too, if you'd like. Just go to dannysessays.com,
tell me where you want to get them, and I'll start sending them to you this week.
I hope you do. Thanks for listening.
