Hello, my name is Holly and I'm a children's librarian here at the Santa Barbara Public
Library. This is the main library and this is the entrance. We're going to take a tour
in this video of the whole library. First thing you notice when you walk in the door
is the returns right here. So I have a book with me that I want to return.
Where does it go once I do though? Let's see. And it's off! The book goes through the opening
and it gets its RFID scanned to tell the computer what the name of the book is and what type of
item it is. It's going for a ride on the AMH machine to a bin that is only for other kids'
books because the machine knows that's what it belongs with. AMH stands for Automated Materials
Handler and it does a lot of sorting that makes our job at the library a lot easier.
Now we can take this book back to the shelf where it lives until the next person takes it out.
Wow, what a journey! So now that we know where the books go once you bring them back,
let's go take a look at where the books are that you might want to check out at the beginning of
your visit to the library. We're going to go down to the lower level where the children's
library is. All right, we made it down to the children's library. Now that we're here,
how do we check out our books? Oh, with a library card! So you can get a library card
for yourself or for your parent and you just need an adult to help you who has a photo ID
and then you can check out 99 items with just one card. That is a lot of books to read. I think that
you would take ages to get through that many books, but it'd be so much fun. So there's all
sorts of books down here. There's picture books, there's chapter books. So let's take a look around
at what kind of books you might find and where they live. The new fiction area is right by the
water fountain and bathroom. It has all the newest chapter books. Behind the computers, you'll find
movies to check out on DVD. Next to the pillar, you'll see the new picture book section. Always
something new and exciting there! Behind that is the row of children's Spanish books. The youth
services desk is in the middle and you'll find a librarian there to help you find what you need
or to print out an assignment for you for free. On the other side of the desk are so so many picture
books. You could find Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus, A to Twist Scientist, Dinosaur vs Bedtime,
or any number of your favorite or soon-to-be-favorite picture books over here.
The juvenile fiction section is toward the back windows and is just packed with great chapter
books. Percy Jackson, Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Land of Stories, The One and Only Ivan. They're just
the beginning of the stories you can find here. Next, you'll see the book club kits, which are
great when a group wants to read the same book. On either side of them, you'll see the in-between
books and the graphic novels. In-betweens are books that are shorter chapter books,
usually with a few pictures. There's books like Magic Treehouse, Ivy and Bean, and Zoe and
Sassafras. The graphic novels are great for learning all sorts of things. They have panels
like comic books and include Dogman and so many other great books. Past this section, you'll see
the non-fiction area. These books are based on true facts and usually have lots of pictures and
detailed illustrations. You can learn about animals, outer space, the rainforest, art,
gemstones, the human body, and so much more. Most of the library is organized alphabetically by
author or title, but the non-fiction section is assigned numbers called Dewey Decimal Numbers to
organize it. So, if you want to find a book here, make sure to write down that number. All right, at the
very back under the windows is where you'll find special series books like Star Wars, Minecraft,
Who Was American Girl, and more. Next to that are books for parents,
and by the rocking chair, you'll find the board books for the little babies that come to the
All right, now that you know where everything is in the Children's Library, you're ready to check
out your books. Wow! So, you can check out books for at least three weeks at a time and there are no
fines. There are so many possibilities available to you. I'm so excited for you. I hope to see you
at the library soon and thank you so much for joining us for the tour today. Bye!
