Charles was born in Ulster, but as a young boy his family moved to America.

Fortunately, a kind blacksmith in Delaware took Charles and ensured he got a good education.
As he grew up, Charles became known for his honesty,

People were talking about independence and Charles wanted to help.
He joined the Continental Congress, where leaders from the 13 colonies made important decisions.
Charles was so good at organizing and writing things down that he was chosen as secretary,
responsible for recording decisions and keeping things running smoothly.
In 1776, the leaders at the Continental Congress decided
it was time to tell the world that America wanted to be free from British rule.
They wrote a very important document called the Declaration of Independence.
Because Charles was the secretary, he helped by writing down the first draft of this famous
document. His name was on that first draft, right next to John Hancock's.
Even though his name didn't stay on the final version, Charles paid a big part
in making sure the Declaration of Independence was created and shared with everyone.
Charles Thompson also helped design the Great Seal of the United States,
a symbol that represents the nation. The seal features a bald eagle holding arrows and an
olive branch, symbolizing both strength and a desire for peace. Charles even added two
Latin mottos that mean, out of many, one and a new order of the ages.
This seal is still used today on important documents and even appears on the back of a
dollar bill. After helping to establish the United States, Charles Thompson remained influential.
He even delivered the news to George Washington about being elected the first president.
Later, Charles translated the Bible into English.
