THE THREATS TO UK DEMOCRACY HAVE NEVER BEEN CLEARER!
There is still time for the government to act but there is no time to delay.
The US is slipping fast into dictatorship - and right now - in the UK - we face threats from the same forces that aided Trump. Hostile states like Russia which meddle in our politics, media and social media channels which platform far-right voices and personalities and normalise extremist positions, billionaire political donors and now, the US administration itself.
We must take immediate steps to preserve the integrity of our elections – tackle dark money, disinformation, direct interference and we must take steps to protect against bad actors in government should they gain power by making it harder to unwind our democracy and human rights.
On 29 June an event in Parliament sponsored by Clive Lewis MP, Richard Quigley MP and Roz Savage MP will highlight the importance of immediate action. It will focus on ‘Future Proofing Democracy - Stopping the Far Right through Constitutional Reform.’
Please take 3 minutes to write to your MP about this important event and ask them to attend on your behalf. They are much more likely to do so if they get letters from constituents like you - you can use the link with this film. It only takes a moment. The future of UK democracy is at stake
The speaker warns that the US is sliding toward dictatorship as presidential power expands and checks and balances vanish. They argue that the UK is vulnerable to similar threats from far-right influence, foreign interference, and a lack of a written constitution, urging immediate government action and public pressure on MPs to protect British democracy.
Domestically, the current US administration has been actively unwinding its own democracy,
removing almost all checks and balances on presidential power. Trump has attacked and
largely nurtured many law firms, much of academia, the civil service, the judiciary, and anyone in
the media who dares to criticize him. If you're American, you're now risking your livelihood if
you publicly criticize Trump. Just think about that. Even if you just want to vote against him,
he's placing obstacles in your way to prevent you from doing so.
Despite having a constitution specifically designed to prevent tyranny, the US is slipping
fast into dictatorship. And right now in the UK, we face threats from the same forces that aided
Trump. Hostile states like Russia which meddle in our politics, media and social media channels
which platform far-right voices and personalities and normalize extremist positions, billionaire
political donors, and now the US administration itself. Our top story this morning, Vice President
of the United States J.D. Vance has blamed Henry Novak's death on the mass invasion of migrants.
He made the comments in a post on X. Course Downing Street has now reacted, hitting out at
quotes, people trying to interfere in our democracy and seeking to stir up division. Until recently,
most UK politicians seem not to recognize the risk, continuing as if the political struggles
in the UK were still the traditional more or less symmetrical battles between political parties,
and ignoring the hostile forces that propelled Trump to power.
And we don't even have a written constitution to defend us. Just a bundle of laws and conventions,
most of which assume good chaps will be in power. That is no longer a safe assumption.
We are extremely vulnerable. We have to leave the E.C.H.R. No ifs, no buts.
In April, I attended an event in Parliament sponsored by Richard Quigley MP,
at which an expert panel whose backgrounds range from constitutional matters and politics to
risk assessment and countermeasure development, both set out the risks
and the steps the government could take to address them. The event was eye-opening.
The experts concluded that if the government takes no action,
we are playing Russian roulette with British democracy. But if the government acts quickly,
and with determination, the risk of the UK going the way of America can be dramatically reduced.
Now a cross-party group of MPs, Clive Lewis, Ross Savage and Richard Quigley,
is jointly sponsoring another event on 29th June to push for urgent action to minimize the risk
to UK democracy. We must take steps to preserve the integrity of our elections,
tackle dark money, disinformation, direct interference, and we must take steps to
protect against bad actors in government should they gain power, by making it harder to unwind
our democracy and human rights. There's still time to act, but there's no time to delay.
So please take three minutes to write to your MP about this event and ask them to attend on
your behalf. They're much more likely to do so if they get letters from constituents like you.
