The death of Thailand's beloved princess, Bajirakiriyabha,
has brought deep sadness to the country.
But it has also left the throne without a clear heir.
And the man now being talked about as the most likely future king
is the exiled son of Thailand's king,
who spent nearly 30 years in America.
But his personal life is full of secrets that could destroy everything.
So why did he come back after all these years?
Why did he abandon his American wife and two daughters?

Let's get started.
Sujarane Vivacharawangsi was a 16-year-old Thai actress
when she first caught the eye of then-crown prince,
Vajiralongkorn, in the late 1970s.
At the time, the prince was already married to his first wife,
Princess Swamsawali.
But that did not stop him.
The actress became his partner,
while his first wife reportedly refused to grant him a divorce.
For many years, the future king lived with Sujarini.
And during this time, they had five children together,
four sons and one daughter.
It wasn't until 1993 that he was able to divorce his first wife after 15 years.
And a year later, he officially married the mother of his children.
For a time, they appeared happy and seemed like an ideal family.
Unfortunately, their happiness was short-lived.
Just two years after their wedding,
Sujarini had to flee to the UK with her children.
The crown prince accused her of having an affair with a 60-year-old air marshal,
which caused a major public scandal.
Shortly after, in 1996,
the couple divorced and their children were stripped of their royal titles,
their place in the line of succession,
disowned, and forced to remain in exile forever.
Prince Vachirisorn was 15 years old at the time.
He attended the prestigious Harrow School in the UK.
But soon after, the Thai ambassador reportedly intervened
and requested that their diplomatic passports be returned.
They were instead issued ordinary passports valid for only one year.
Also, Princess Siravanavari, the only daughter among the five children,
was forcibly brought back to Thailand alone
after a high monk prophesied that she would protect the nation.
Prince Vachirisorn, his mother, and his brothers
later moved to the United States in 1997,
where they were granted political asylum and eventually citizenship.
Their early years in America were very difficult,
as they had little financial support.
Vachirisorn worked different jobs,
including selling hot dogs at sports events and door-to-door vacuum sales
to support the family.
Despite several attempts by him and his brothers
to reconnect with their father,
they were never allowed to reach him.
Despite this, Vachirisorn did not give up.
He worked hard in his studies
and earned both a bachelor's degree and a law degree.
He later completed a Master of Laws
He went on to build a successful legal career in New York,
working for around 15 to 16 years as an attorney specializing in energy law.
He later became a legal advisor and partner at Goldberg Sagala LLP,
one of the respected law firms in the United States.
Despite his success, Vachirisorn always longed to return to his homeland,
and in 2023, that moment finally came.
He boarded a plane and flew back to Thailand for the first time in nearly 30 years.
He insisted that he was visiting Thailand only as a private citizen,
with no ambition or interest in the throne.
But few people believed him.
The timing raised questions.
Just a year earlier, the king's eldest daughter,
Princess Bhadrakidiyabha,
had collapsed and fallen into a coma.
This led many to wonder about his real intentions.
When Vachirisorn arrived at a school in northern Thailand,
hundreds of villagers immediately stood up and pressed their hands together
in a traditional Y greeting.
Some even knelt in respect.
During his visit, he toured schools, made merit at temples,
and supported humanitarian projects,
including housing assistance for flood victims.
He also rode Bangkok's BTS Skytrain
and remarked that it was cleaner than the New York subway.
He visited a children's foundation as well,
spending time with the children at Hope House.
He later made a second trip in early 2024,
this time arriving with a Thai passport
and a Thai national ID card,
which he had obtained for the first time in his life.
He was no longer seen only as an American lawyer visiting his homeland.
He was officially presenting himself as a Thai citizen.
In May 2025, he shaved his head and entered Buddhist monkhood,
wearing saffron robes, as is traditionally done in Thailand,
to show devotion and respect.
For many people in Thailand, these actions were impossible to ignore.
Rumors began to spread that he might be positioning himself
for a future role in the royal succession,
whether or not the palace approved.
But while Thailand was watching his every public move,
very few people were paying attention to what was happening in his private life.
Vachirisorn had actually been secretly married
to an American woman of Italian descent,
named Elisa Garifano.
The couple has two daughters together,
and according to sources close to the family,
he had been keeping that marriage and those children
completely hidden from the Thai public.
This was reportedly because, under Thai law,
a monarch cannot be married to a foreign citizen.
In addition, their daughters, as American citizens,
would not be eligible to be part of the royal succession.
But there was more to the story.
During his marriage, the prince had a mistress,
a Ukrainian-American social media influencer
named Anastasia Nikishina.
According to multiple sources,
his obsession with her destroyed his marriage.
He allegedly spent large amounts of money on her,
to the point that he reportedly fell into serious debt.
Anastasia also sparked widespread online controversy
when she publicly referred to herself as
the future queen of Thailand.
His wife, Elisa, eventually filed for divorce,
but later paused the proceedings.
She reportedly hoped that Vachirisorn
would bring her and their daughters to Thailand,
but that never happened.
According to reports, he abandoned them
and provided no support.
Eventually, Vachirisorn distanced himself from Anastasia.
The money had run out.
The obsession had cooled,
and he had bigger plans to focus on.
Vachirisorn has recently made headlines
because of his new relationship
with Prada Thansita Dilakannansakul,
a 28-year-old Thai beauty queen.
She was the third runner-up at Miss Grand Thailand 2024
and the first runner-up at Miss Globe 2024.
The two have been seen together on several occasions,
going on dates, traveling both in Thailand and abroad,
and even appearing together in social media live streams,
which many have viewed as an unofficial public confirmation
of their relationship.
Those who closely follow the Thai royal family
noticed something interesting about Prada's appearance.
She seemed to adopt a style very similar
to that of the women in King Vajiralongkorn's inner circle,
almost as if she had been carefully groomed
to fit into the world she was being positioned to enter.
Meanwhile, his wife remains in the United States,
raising their two daughters alone,
while reportedly still burdened by massive debts
the couple incurred during their marriage.
Looking at Vachirisorn's life,
it is impossible not to notice how much he resembles his father.
King Vajiralongkorn has been married four times.
He has publicly humiliated his wives,
stripped them of their titles,
and discarded them when they were no longer useful.
The apple, as they say, does not fall far from the tree.
But Vachirisorn's road to the throne is far from clear.
In June 2025, he was detained at a Buddhist temple
and escorted onto a flight back to the U.S.
He is reportedly banned from entering Thailand again.
Do you think he could ever take the throne?
And if he does, would he be any different from his father?
