Celebrated French design house Cartier has unlocked its priceless jewellery box
for an exclusive Melbourne exhibition. The collection from around the globe,
crafted over the past century, is about to go on show at the NGV.
Isabel Quinlan has this preview.
The jeweller of kings and the king of jewellers.
The beauty of Cartier.
For more than a century, the renowned luxury house has adorned royalty,
sparkled on high society and being the go-to choice of celebrities.
It's really otherworldly to look at the quality and just the ambition of both the designers
and also the wearers who have commissioned these pieces.
From brooches to bracelets, necklaces and rare gems,
400 of them now on display at the NGV, direct from London's Victorian Albert Museum.
So we've been able to expand the original V&A exhibition into something spectacular.
It's the biggest Cartier retrospective in Australia ever.
300 of the works have never been seen here before,
and we're talking some of the world's most exquisite and beautiful jewellery.
Including treasures that truly sit above the rest.
The exceptional room of 24 tiaras.
I don't think you'll find that many tiaras anywhere else.
Some may say the crown jewel of this exhibition is these custom pieces
On display together for the first time,
they're a rare glimpse into the glamour and style of the diva herself.
Jewellery tells us so much about people.
It's an emotional story, it's a human story and it tells us about society.
I hope that's something people will take away from the exhibition too.
Cartier is open until October.
Tickets are available on the NGV website.
