Let the kids learn a new magic math trick and learn how to subtract along the way. Math tricks are numerous and they help in giving the kids the chance to play some educational games while at the same time enjoy getting the answers right and making the players just go "WOW".
Since this is a magical math trick, it means that the game is divided into two different sections: the first one is related to the calculations which will be done by the player according to the number they choose, and the second section is related to the magical part of guessing the answers and letting the people get amazed.
First of all, one of the important tips for this trick to let the magic work is to let the player do the calculations privately without showing you any of them or even tell you the number they have chosen. This is important because if you knew the number you could do the calculations and it won't be called magic anymore.
There are three different steps that the player should go through with the game: first to choose a number, second to reverse the digits of that number, and third to take away the smaller number from the larger one. This is the part of the player, while the one giving the orders will then ask either about the hundreds or else the units digit in order to guess the other one.
There are some facts which the kid should always know while playing this trick in order to handle the magic that will happen at the end. The first fact is that the tens digit in the final number will always be nine, so the kid could give it as a guess on its own. The second fact is that the hundreds digit plus the units digit will always be nine in total, so they will choose one to ask about, do the calculation in their mind about which number would give a 9 if added to the number the player gave them, and then guess the digit they did not ask about or else guess the whole final answer and let the magic work.
While the kids are still in the phase of practicing this trick on themselves before they go forward with tricking their friends and family, they will be learning how to subtract big numbers. Subtraction is easy but tricky for the young ages as well, and when it comes to those big numbers, they should always make sure they are placing them correctly under one another to take away the right numbers from one another. One of the important tips in subtraction is teaching the child more about how to take away from the next number if the number is small and the other one could not be taken away from it (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RcAwwP8PJbg).
These tricks are interesting to use for the child because we believe it combines between learning and playing; they play and do these tricks on their family and friends while at the same time learn to do some mental calculations in their heads and also learn subtraction and how to subtract (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jEK689u7hJs).
On the other side, kids could learn subtraction through lots of different methods and ways, it could be through such tricks, it could be through playing games, and it could be also through the ordinary ways with a little bit of help from the parents and that's exactly what we are trying to offer you for homeschooling your kids, a little bit of help to make math a lot easier for them (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ART8iVG3yHg).
These tricks give the kids more self-confidence when it comes to math because they will be performing some tricks on their friends and will be getting the right answers along with being very good when it comes to subtraction.
Let your kid practice the whole trick several times before coming to the part of trying it on friends. ------- LearningMole focuses on educating children of all ages. We offer advice and practical, interactive ideas to help parents challenge, homeschool, teach and develop their children’s skills at home.
Help your child to progress and explore and most importantly - have fun!
Magic maths are a really good way for getting your child to think mentally,
to use their written strategies and to really enjoy maths.
The idea of magic maths is that we give the children a formula that they can then go around
practicing on adults and children and impress them with their mathematical magical skills.
The idea is that they have a range of different formulas and if you watch some of the other
videos you'll see other formulas floating around. This is a formula that's really going to impress
those adults. So what you're going to do is you are going to practice on your child first,
show them how to do it and then set them free and allow them to work their maths magic.
So you're asking the adult or your child to write down a three-digit number where all the digits
are different. So it has to be a number with hundreds, tens and units in it and all the numbers
have to be different. I wouldn't use decimals, just literally a whole number. So think about
a number, any number you like. So I'm going to choose one, nine, three. Now you ask the person
to reverse those digits. So reverse, three, nine, one. And then all you're going to do,
this is a great one for practicing subtraction, all you're going to do is ask that person to
subtract the smaller number from the larger number. So we're going to set a little column
subtraction here. So 391 subtract 193. 1 take away 3, we can't do, so we have to borrow.
11 take away 3 gives us 8. 8 take away 9, we can't do, so we have to borrow.
18 take away 9 is 9. And 2 take away 1 is 1. So our answer is 198.
This part you're asking the adult or you're asking your child to do in secrecy. They are not to show
you any of these calculations or any of these numbers. They're going to work that out on a
separate piece of paper where you can't see. Because now we have the maths magic part. This
the opportunity for your child to then calculate or work out or magic the answer. So this is their
little formula that's going to help them calculate the answer. And this is a really good one for
place value. So the question they're going to ask is, what is the hundreds or units digit?
And from that they will ascertain what the answer is using this formula. Because the answer,
my 198, so here's my answer here, will always have a 9 in the tens column, which it does. So that's
a given. They don't need to ask anything about the tens column. They know that it's always going to
be a 9 in the tens column. The hundreds and the units digit will also add up to 9. So the hundreds
and the units, when they're added up, they will equal 9. Oh, sorry, wrong way around. 1 plus 8
equals 9. So the child will decide which one to ask, hundreds or units. So if I am pretending that
I am using this magic maths formula, I'm going to say to the person, I won't know that their number
is 198, but I'm going to say, what was your hundreds number? They will tell me 1. So I will
know that 1 plus something in the units has to make 9. So I'll know that there's an 8 in the
units. I already know that the tens number is always 9. So I'm going to be able to guess the
number is 198. And imagine how impressed they're going to be with that. Let's just go through it
again and go through the steps so that you can just see it in action again. But it is a really
fun way and your child will really feel confident. It boosts their self-esteem and it is a really,
really good activity for place value. So let's just go through the little process again.
So you're basically teaching your child to be able to ask all of these questions and then come
to their conclusion at the end. So you're asking a person to think of a three-digit number,
but all the digits have to be different. I'm going to choose a bigger number this time.
I'm going to choose 614. I'm going to reverse the digits to get 416. Then I'm going to take away
the smaller number from the larger number. And again, this adult is doing this in secrecy.
Okay, so 614, take away 416. You will also be reminding your child when they're having a go
at working this out that their columns need to be lined up properly in order to subtract
accurately. So 4 take away 6, we cannot do, so we have to borrow. 14 take away 6 is 8.
Zero take away 1, we cannot do, we have to borrow. 10 subtract 1 is 9. 5 subtract 4 is 1.
So we are ending up with 198 again. You're now going to get your child to ask what is the
hundreds or the units number. So that's where the place value really does come in. And they
will already know that their tens number is always going to be a 9, as you can see it is.
And then they also know that their units and their hundreds is always going to add up to 9.
So all they need to ask is what is the hundreds or what is the units number? So I'm going to ask
for the units this time. The person who has their answer in secrecy will tell me that their unit
digit is 8. And then I will be able to calculate 8 plus what makes 9, which is 1. I know my tens
number is 9. So I know that number has to be 1, 9, 8, 198. Your child will really enjoy this.
They will really enjoy challenging adults and working through and surprising them with their
mathematical genius.
