Hi, my CantoBuddies! Welcome to Weekend Canto. It's Tracy here.
September and October are popular months for weddings.
It's very common for the newlyweds to give a speech during the wedding,
including a thank you speech to the parents and the in-laws. If Cantonese is their first language,
that is heartwarming to say a few words in Cantonese, even if they're fluent in English.
I'm going to share a few phrases with you now to express gratitude.
多謝 means thank you. 你 means you. If you have noticed, you can see there is a heart
at the bottom of the character. We usually use this Chinese character for the elders to show
respect. Its pronunciation and meanings are the same as 你. 你哋嘅 means your. 愛 means love.
The whole sentence means thank you for your love.
多謝你哋一直以來無名不姿嘅照顧。 一直以來 means all the time. This character
你 can be pronounced as 嚟 and 你. In this short clip, I typed 嚟 and I pronounced it as
你. Thanks to one of our CantoBuddies for pointing that out. Thank you so much for being awesome!
無名不姿 means in every possible way. 照顧 means care or look after. The whole sentence
means thank you for your meticulous care. 多謝你哋一直以來無名不姿嘅照顧。
多謝你哋嘅養育之恩。 養育 means nurture. 恩 means grace.
This phrase is a formal way to express gratitude for the love and care from childhood.
多謝你哋嘅養育之恩。 To give reassurance. If you want to reassure your
in-laws that you will look after their child, you can say 我會好好照顧。 我 means I,
會 means will, 好好 means very well. 照顧 here is used as a verb which means to look after.
And you put your spouse's name at the end. For example, 我會好好照顧Tracy.
The whole sentence means I will try my best to look after Tracy.
You can also tell both parents that you will look after each other by saying
我哋會好好照顧大家。 我哋 means we. 大家 usually means everyone. And here means
each other. The whole sentence means we will try our best to look after each other.
After you both officially become husband and wife, 老公 and 老婆,
you will usually refer to each other's parents as in-laws in English. And there are such terms
in Cantonese as well. If you are the husband, you will refer to your mother-in-law as
外父 and your mother-in-law as 外母. If you are the wife, you will refer to your
father-in-law as 老爺 and your mother-in-law as 奶奶. That's all for now. If you'd like to
