Hey everyone, we just finished our third trip around South Africa
and in this video we're going to show you our top 10 places to visit in the country.
So hope you enjoy it.
South Africa has an incredibly diverse geography which spans world-class coastlines,
majestic mountain ranges, and wildlife-rich savannas.
Over the course of three separate trips and more than six months of travel time,
we've had the opportunity to explore nearly every region.
While our previous video featured 15 amazing destinations,
our extended experience has allowed us to narrow that down to a curated selection.
So in this video, we'll be sharing our definitive top 10 places to visit in South Africa.
At the end, we'll also share some essential travel tips.
Now let's dive in.
We are Zach and Ina.
We make helpful videos about destinations around the world
so you can easily plan your own adventures.
Winding along the rugged southwestern coast of the Western Cape,
the Cape Whale Route is a spectacular 120 kilometer or 75 mile scenic drive
that stretches from Gordon's Bay to Gonsbai.
This stretch of coastline is flanked by mesmerizing mountains on one side
and the Atlantic Ocean on the other,
cutting through a rich landscape of rivers, valleys, and protected nature reserves.
Following the breathtaking R44 Clarence Drive,
the route offers the country's best land-based whale watching during the winter months.
Along the way, you can explore the coastal village of Betty's Bay
to see the famous penguin colony at Stony Point.
It's also an essential stop to discover the native fenbos
at the Harold Porter National Botanical Gardens.
Further down the coast lies Hermanus,
a quaint town where you can walk the numerous cliff paths that are full of dasis.
The route ends about 30 minutes down the road at Gonsbai.
Coming in at number nine is Algraubies Falls National Park
and the surrounding Orange River region.
Known by the Khoi people as the place of great noise,
Algraubies is where South Africa's largest river violently thunders through a massive granite gorge.
It's an impressive landscape of stark desert plains and deep ravines
where you can easily spend a day exploring the boardwalks or observing the local wildlife.
Just across the river lies an area that looks unlike anything else in the country,
the raw wilderness of Reemvesmak.
Formed by ancient volcanic activity,
the landscape here feels prehistoric and is dominated by red cliffs.
At the bottom of a huge canyon, you'll find the Reemvesmak hot springs.
We made it to the hot springs here.
It's beautiful scenery all around us and there's literally nobody here.
So peaceful.
The panorama route is a spectacular mountain drive
winding through the rugged Drakensberg escarpment.
The town of Graskop serves as the perfect gateway to this region
with the majority of the routes most iconic landmarks located just outside the town limits.
As you drive north, you'll pass a variety of viewpoints and waterfalls
including God's Window, Borksluck Potholes, and the massive Lisbon and Berlin Falls.
But the undisputed highlight is the Bleda River Canyon.
Guarded by the famous Three Rondevelles,
this enormous green canyon offers unforgettable panoramic views.
Stretching over 300 kilometers or 186 miles along South Africa's lush southern coast,
the garden route is renowned for its diverse ecosystems, tidal lagoons, and dramatic cliffs.
While the route itself covers a huge distance,
we find that Plettenberg Bay represents the best of the region
offering a charming town center balanced by an unmatched variety of nature experiences.
It's home to the spectacular Roberg Nature Reserve
where you can hike the impressive peninsula or do a guided snorkel tour
alongside hundreds of wild and curious cape fir seals.
You can also captain your very own rental boat up the serene Kerboms River
or simply relax on the area's soft sandy beaches.
Just a 30-minute drive east brings you to Blaukrins Bridge,
home to the world's highest commercial bridge bungee jump.
Five, four, three, two, one, bungee jump!
At number six is the town of Saint Lucia and the Isamangaliso Wetland Park.
As South Africa's first UNESCO World Heritage Site,
Isamangaliso is a sprawling and biologically diverse protected area
that hugs the subtropical KwaZulu-Natal coast.
The town of Saint Lucia sits directly on the edge of the park's vast estuary
serving as the perfect gateway that's full of great accommodations and restaurants.
From here you can embark on a boat cruise to spot hippos and crocodiles
or take a scenic drive through the park's coastal forest toward the shores of Cape Vidal
where you can spot elephants, buffalo, and rhinos along the way.
But the real magic happens after dark
when Saint Lucia's resident hippos routinely leave the water to graze on the town's grassy lawns.
Hey everyone, we hope you've been enjoying this video so far.
And if you're planning your own trip to South Africa, we've made an interactive travel guide
that's going to complement everything you've been seeing perfectly.

into creating this interactive guide and it's all available in an easy-to-use app.
Think of it as your ultimate road trip companion right there on your phone.

and all the essential links you'll need, making planning a breeze.

Now let's get back to our South Africa top 10 countdown.
Straddling the border between South Africa and Botswana,
the Kalahari is a mesmerizing landscape of fossilized red sand dunes and dry riverbeds.
It's renowned for its high concentration of big cats,
specifically cheetahs, leopards, and the legendary black-maned Kalahari lions.
You enter through the Twei Riviera gate on the South African side.
From here, you can track the ancient Awab River Valley northwest,
which takes you toward the Matamata rest camp on the Namibian border.
This is a route that offers spectacular game viewing.
Alternatively, you can head north along the Nosab River Valley.
Logistically, a high-clearance vehicle is essential for navigating the sand tracks,
and you must deflate your tires a bit at the Twei Riviera service station
before heading into the park.
Our fourth spot takes us to the Cape Winelands,
an expansive and world-renowned wine region just outside of Cape Town.
While there are countless towns to explore across these valleys,
Stellenbosch remains our definitive favorite.
It's a beautiful destination defined by its oak-lined streets,
historic Cape Dutch architecture, and a lively energy driven by its local university.
Surrounding the town are some of the country's best wine estates.
What truly sets Stellenbosch apart is its natural landscapes.
Right on its doorstep lies the majestic Jankershoek Nature Reserve,
offering tons of hiking and biking trails that wind through tall granite peaks.
You can watch our full Cape Winelands video to learn more about this region,
including other towns to visit and trails to hike.
At number three is the majestic Drakensberg Mountain Range.
Over our three trips, we've explored this massive mountain wall from end to end.
From the rugged 4x4 tracks of Sani Pass in the south,
through the lush valleys of Kathkin Park in the center,
and the iconic views of Cathedral Peak.
But for us, the ultimate highlight lies in the north within Royal Natal National Park.
This area is home to the amphitheater,
a colossal basalt cliff face that rises over a thousand meters high.
The best way to experience it is via the challenging Sentinel Peak Trail,
where you'll traverse the mountainside before scaling vertical chain ladders
fixed to the rock face to reach the summit.
From the top, a river plunges over the edge, creating the Tugella Falls.
The panoramic views from above are completely unmatched,
especially if you're lucky enough to see the cloud blanket effect in the distance.
Dominated by the flat peak of Table Mountain,
Cape Town is an amazing city that blends natural beauty with rich cultural history.
You can easily spend days here exploring the V&A waterfront,
strolling through the Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden,
hiking Lion's Head, or relaxing on the white sands of Camps Bay and Clifton Beach.
To experience the region's full scale,
you must head beyond the city limits and onto the Cape Peninsula.
A coastal road trip here treats you to the extraordinary Chapman's Peak Drive,
as well as the raw wilderness of the Cape Point Nature Reserve
and the wild penguins of Boulders Beach.
We have another full video about all the things to do in Cape Town,
as well as day trip options from the city, so make sure to check that out before visiting.
Finally, taking our number one spot is the legendary Kruger National Park.
Having visited twice now, we fell even deeper in love with this place our second time around.
Stretching 360 kilometers or 220 miles from north to south, Kruger is an immense sanctuary
where the variety of wildlife is on a completely other level,
and there's truly nowhere else like it in South Africa.
Beyond observing the Big Five on a self-drive or guided safari,
the park's spectacular landscapes constantly shift from sweeping savanna plains to dense forests.
You can easily spend up to a week exploring its endless roads and rest camps.
And if you're up for an adventure, some of the camps within the park even offer guided walks.
We did one of these from the Lower Sabi Rest Camp and followed our fearless guides into the bush,
where we came across a huge group of buffalo.
This is the sound I was hearing.
Come stand where I am. Don't be afraid.
Look, there is big bulls, but they don't have any chance of doing anything
because they trust each other. They believe in one another.
As we promised at the start of the video,
we'll now share a few essential travel tips for South Africa.
First, the best time to visit depends on your itinerary.
For a classic safari in Kruger National Park,
travel during the dry winter months from May to September.
This is when wildlife is seen more around the watering holes and vegetation is sparse.
If you're heading to Cape Town or plan on doing the garden route,
the summer months from November to April offer gorgeous sunny beach weather,
though you should expect larger crowds and peak pricing.
We recommend renting a car during your trip.
This will give you the ultimate freedom to explore the country's best national parks
and nature reserves, many of which aren't reachable by public transportation.
The roads around the country are generally good,
but some zones have potholes or dirt stretches,
such as the Drakensberg area, the Kalahari, or the Wild Coast.
South Africa does have high crime rates in certain areas,
so you always need to stay vigilant.
Stick to well-traveled tourist-friendly zones and avoid walking alone at night.
When driving around, always lock your doors,
roll up your windows at the intersections,
and never leave valuable items visible in a parked car.
Trust your instincts and seek local advice from your accommodation
regarding which areas to avoid.
We've personally never had problems traveling around South Africa,
and most of the locals we've met have been quite friendly people.
There's lots of other details to know about the destinations in this top 10 countdown,
and we have other videos on our channel that dive deeper into most of these spots,
so give those a watch to get even more info.
